RT, I've seen some of your flea finds. In my eyes, you're living the dream! ;-)
You wanna see some sorry *** flea area come on down!

thanks! I'm really pretty lucky, there's only one other tool guy in this area. He's an older guy in mid-70s. He's been doing it a long time. We have become buddies and we point each other in the right direction sometimes. He told me his kids told him to stop buying so much, they are gonna be left with it all. so, he doesn't dig or look as hard as I do now.

You should be ashamed of yourself, preying in the elderly like that 🤣 good call on befriending him and teaming up on things ! I have found much more stuff that way than trying to hide it from everyone and keeping it all to yourself!

but its the hunt and treasures you find at the flea that keep you going back! I could do that every day!
Absolutely, me too. But I wouldn't be able to hit my Wednesday and Friday fleas if they were in the opposite direction from work, so I am grateful for my good fortune.

good call on befriending him and teaming up on things!
I've got a few guys like that (ranging from, "Hey, Frank's got an old box filled with all un-plated stuff...", to actually putting stuff aside for each other), and today I just made a great new contact. He was two minutes too late on the Union Craftsman machinist's box last week, and we exchanged a few pleasantries at that time. Today I saw him again, pawing through the close-outs of a vintage garage goldmine with me. (Much more on that in a bit..., but for now I'll just say not only did I not get to my Flea Market stop number two, I didn't even have time to walk around the rest of my Flea Market stop number 1.) He reached into the wood box I was toting around with me for the stuff I was putting aside as I moved from table to table, pile to pile, mistaking it for available stuff, and after I told him 'Sorry, that's mine,' we recognized each other. We got to talking about the Union Craftsman machinist's box and he said he has a few parts boxes missing drawers etc that might have the center latch and the mirror I am missing! It turns out he lives just two towns over from me. Sometimes it pays to stay aloof, and sometimes it pays to make friends.

The Proto Breaker is a bit of an odd duck, you push it in, and it can be clocked to any of 20 rotational positions. They also sold this mechanism as an adapter. the part number 55457 now belongs to a flex head ratchet.

I found one of these Proto bars not long ago, but with the rotating head unattached. Is it held on with a snap ring? or something else? If you could take a pic of it for me I would be very thankful!

Thanks!

To get to my first early bird flea market, I actually have to drive past it on my left, on a divided highway, where there's a rise over R.R. tracks, make a legal (and rare for NJ) left-hand U-Turn, and come back to it now on my right. At the top of the rise I usual take a peek to see what's going on. If there's a lot of stuff out where the house liquidators set up (ground space, not tables), I go there first. If not, I go right to the table areas. Today the house close-out area was swarming with activity and my heart started racing. As soon as I parked I could see that it was the contents of an old garage. I will show a bunch of photos later.

As I said above, there was so much stuff to pick through that I didn't have enough time to walk around the rest of the flea market, and I didn't even stop at flea market #2. That has NEVER happened to me before.

Here are the pickings...

Pic 1 is everything.

Some of the highlights are a DISSTON No. 2 saw vise (I have some no namers, glad to find this), the Lowell No. 3-1/2 ratchet (I have a smaller one, so does Rag's and a few other guys, they change directions with that knob all the way on the end!), and the socket sets .

Pic 2 is a zoom on the socket sets.

- Complete New Britain 3/8-inch drive

- Complete Westcraft 1/2-inch drive

- And a funky set in the wooden box with OD web straps for hinges that I can't identify

Pic 3 is a zoom on the wooden crate in the back.

- The 1/2-inch drive Sliding Tee is a MUSTANG (Williams) MS-70! (I needed it! I've been building a set onesy-twosy and I have the ratchet, speeder, and hinge handle, and two sockets.)

- The biggies on the far right are misc (Blackhawk, NB, Walden, Hinsdale) 1/2-inch drive sockets, all with 1-1/8" or 1-1/16" service openings (which as anyone knows are often, along with the littlest buggers, the hardest to find).

- The eight (8) dark 1/2-inch drive sockets are all wartime "-D-I-" sockets. There's a double star BOG 7/8" double star in there too somewhere.

- Most of those swivels and uni joints are 3/8-inch drive, couple 1/2-inch drive, misc brands, including Wright, Cornwell, Walden, NB, Craftsman BE and (H), Plomb WF-72, WF-73, and WF-75, and - surprise, surprise - an "[S.R.]". Also my first ever BRITOOL piece.

- In the cardboard box are all 1/4-inch drive "-D-I-" and drag link bits (Cornwell, Duro)

Let's see how well you guys know your thread host.

Of all those items, which do you think I consider the real Gem of the Lot?

I'll say the eight (8) dark 1/2-inch drive sockets are all wartime "-D-I-" sockets. There's a double star BOG 7/8" double star in there too somewhere.

No, no, and no, but all good guesses, all high on my list!

(Maybe I'm not as transparent as I thought!)

The post-war wine crate! :lol_hitti
Is that what it is? I couldn't figure it out. Funny you should mention it though. The first thing I picked up was the Lowell rat, then the Disston saw vise, then the socket sets, and I have them all tucked up under my arm etc, one hand free, moving to the next load - and you KNOW that big Lowell rat ain't light. When I saw several boxes of sockets that would need combing through I started looking around for a bin or something to tote my keepers from table to table in, and everything else was plastic or cardboard and I knew when I had it full they wouldn't even notice it or charge me for it, so I figured I might as well pick out something good! So I dumped out what was in it and put my stuff in it instead. :)

I can’t really make out the antique socket set but I’m sure you will tell us more.
Oh yes I will! :bounce: It will require a thread of its own. And as a hint, I'm going to need some help from the guys on the "Tools from the Old World" thread! And since you zeroed in on this albeit indirectly - THIS is the Gem! :)

You're probably still catching up on posts, emeralcoupe, but I just revealed it's the funky no-name socket set in the wooden box with OD canvas strap hinges. I do like the NB 3/8-inch drive set a lot though! The ratchet (NS41) has a strange selector, or at least one that I not familiar with, making me wonder if it's slightly newer than I was thinking, or if the selector has been replaced. I will be posting more photos on the NB thread.

For what it is worth, that looks identical to a Miller Falls set I have, and MF made a lot of craftsman woodworking stuff.

Stopped by a going out of business sale and grabbed a few things. A zip tie gun, bag of cotter pins, Milwaukee saw blades, an American Beauty soldering iron that is either new or hardly used. It was in it original box with the instructions but the box was turning into dust. Propane torch with a nice heating tip in its metal box, a USA made heat gun (needs a new cord) and a long HF tape measure. All in for 15.00

Was at a garage sale today. All kinds of tools. I pulled out some Ford wrenches and a SO speeder. Also had a handful of extensions as well as DOE wrenches. He wanted way to much but I did buy a SO speeder and two SO boxes. Found some Bonney sockets as well. He realized I wanted SO tools and says he has some in the garage, hold on. Comes out with a milk crate full of SO. I asked how much for the whole thing but he wouldent price it. I pocket through and pulled out some good stuff. He wanted $180!!! I mean, we’re at a garage sale, not a SO truck. I couldn’t pay that and left. Sad day, but at least I got the SO boxes.

Past up on a couple of items today..

One was an OLD telephone comanie or something bolt-cutter-like wire crimper. I didn't klnow what terminal it was used on so I didn't get it.

The other was a very old chest with 5 of 6 fire extinguisher grenades (heavy fragile glass blubs painted red) in it.

Time to strike when the snap-on comes out! $180 was just the first salvo... need to put your hand on your heart and go "Whoa daddy!" Then hit him with a $75.....

Got this off Kijiji last night for 25$. First one I've seen at a reasonable price so I jumped on it.

I found one of those a couple of years ago. It came from the C&H sugar plant in Crockett, CA.

Snuck out for a second visit to an estate sale as they opened up the garage finally. Wish I'd have had a bit more time available, but I did OK. I'l go back tomorrow to look for a few MIA pieces from this haul.

Miller's falls 77A Hand drill - frozen but I'm certain that is just gummy lube, Stilletto BP hammer, SK 3/4 drive T-bar, Thee Proto sockets - one is a 2-3/8 in 3/4" drive, 420,Champion Dearment Channelocks, the needle nose are Crescent Crestalloy, one williams and one Armstrong sockets, and the socket "set" is P&C from 3/8 to 1" missing the 7/16 and 7/8

attachment.php

I saw this under the bench and spotted the "Long C" and grabbed it with minimal inspection!

attachment.php

Unfortunately the original tool is gone (something to look for tomorrow)

attachment.php

And after a dry dust off and a light damp wipe off. Not great, but not terrible condition either:

attachment.php

The Socket/ratchet rack is for hex drive Duro. I think I saw most of those? so again, tomorrow. Ford wrench (don't see many of these any more), 3 Greenlee punches (I need to do a complete inventory and maybe sell the dupes...), 6 Craytex wheels - Fine, Med, and 1 coarse, Forceps, the "pliersm ar actually pipe pliers based on the teeth, with no makers markings but WITH "Patent APPLIED FOR" forged in? :dunno: A crank for another hand drill (Stanley 1221) A Stevens Spin tight, a driver with a relly nice wood handle, the clamping jaw for a vulcanizinf clamp, and ra palmgren catalog brochure!

attachment.php

The Palmgren paperwork opened up - I'd love to find one of the milling attachments!:

More from the same haul:

A bunch of hardware, the larger corner braces are NOT 90 degrees? Not sure what those are for, but I'd bet they are hard to find today. The glass knobs were a double win as the screw was the one we needed for the drawer pulls SWMBO bought off of Etsy for her night stand repaint project where we were missing one screw (10-26? not 10-24, or 10-32 or even 28 threads per inch, which would at least be a "Standard"...) Meanwhile I'll watch for another odd ball screw as these are going "in stock"

attachment.php

A sewing machine drawer orphan. I have 2 now and if I could ever get up to 9 or 12, would make a "case" for them for a "chest of drawers" out of old wood. I don't even care if they aren't perfect matches....

attachment.php

A bunch of misc silver and silver plate pieces. The ladies of the house will make the clamp on earnings into other jewelry. I'm not sure what the taller "stick" is; possibly something for keeping a tray of food hot? Fill with oil, stick in a wick and light? I'm also not sure what the spoon that is not a spoon was for? Olives? :headscrat

attachment.php

A vintage, possibly antique fan for my fan collecting Jyoungest daughter.

attachment.php

And I missed this in the "Tools" posts: I think this is now my smallest "C" clamp! only .180 capacity!

attachment.php

All told, including both posts; $15 for my box O' Stuff!

Out transsecting the continent, I stopped in Mineral, WA, at a “huge barn sale” last Sunday. The barn wasn’t that huge, but the hurricane fenced-in lot had several buildings and a lot of stuff on tables and under tarps. Several boats, trailers, 50gal drums stuffed with fishing rods, crates of reels, and other miscellancy. The proprietor had a gravelly voice and was, as far as visible, fully tattooed. I dug through a few likely-looking totes and found a BOG socket, an orphaned Indestro stamped-steel DOE, and a 1930s Bonney CV DOE. Having left my smartphone (wanted list) and Mrs. LesserSon in the van, I thanked the guy, and left without buying anything. Later stopped at a “huge neighborhood garage sale” down the road near Silver Creek. Nice little Kennedy machinist chest with keys and a few electric motors and shop-made jigs. But again, this was just to dull the ache of flea market deficit. No purchases.
Just as well, because a week on the road, living in a minivan, has taught me I have too much stuff already. One thing that has proven useful is the pair of drop-over car-door screens I devised with Mrs. LesserSon and my mother, Mrs. LesserSon Senior, took time away from her quilting to sew up for us. They have worked great for those nights when pitching a tent for a few hours sleep has seemed a net loss.

You're getting dangerously close to Portland. Will you be passing through?

Maybe a cocktail-stirring implement?

Actually we were able to google up similar patterns from Rogers 1847. Olive fork/Spoon. No dice on THIS pattern however. (sort of "hammered")

Both the candle stick and the Burner thing turned out to be sterling Silver! The candle stick weighs 5 ounces. (Not sire on the other as it had plaster of Paris in the base to weigh it down, lending weight (no pun intended) to the idea its a wick oil burner.

Burner is marked "sterling silver", "1511", "No other metal", and "Udall & Ballou"; Google is NO help as it can't find any of that with 1511...

What I'm also wondering is this symbol/pattern on the (Sterling) silver and turquoise earring is from. It was made in Mexico (all the earrings were) so I'm guessing its Aztec? :dunno: I'm pretty sure this it is 'right side up" as the ear clamp would have positioned it this way:

Miller's falls 77A Hand drill - frozen but I'm certain that is just gummy lube

Sometimes WD-40 is the right thing... For the "Frozen" drill I tightened the chuck til I got traction, and got it moving slightly, so with that I squirted a bit of WD in the 2 oil holes and at the "seams" and got it turning more, then again and added the main wheels "seams" and it started truing petty freely, then once more a little bit more and included the handle and now it turns like glass!

I'll add some real lube later after the WD drains/evaporates off a bit adn cal it good! All it needed was enough to dissolve the gunked old lubes and it freed right up! (Things like this is what makes some think WD is a do-all be-all "lube". It's not, but for the purpose of getting the old lube loosened, its perfectly fine, as long as you follow up with real oil!

not exactly a haul, more a gripe

Here I am getting excited from looking at the pictures and then I scroll down to see a wall of text. These estate liquidator people are always the worst.
Signing in, calling names, it's a yard sale, not a art auction lady. I wonder how much those people get paid, I can't even be bothered to put my own stuff on ebay, never mind take 300 pictures of some junk in someones house and write descriptions
