Small haul from my Friday early bird flea market. See Pic 1.

The funny thing about the Browne & Sharp surface gage (No. 621) is that some of you may recall I found the sliding scriber piece without this standing piece last year. I'm going to see if they fit together, but I have a feeling that piece was Starrett.

The two pieces under that are Herbrand square plug sockets. I don’t really have a serious Herbrand 1/2-inch drive set or partial set gong, but I know others do, and my hunch is these might be hard to find. So into my bag they went.

The round thing is a Stanley #1266 measuring tape. I'll have more to show n' tell about that on Unaiu's "Vintage Measuring Tapes" thread later.

The "S" wrench is an early BON{B}NEY /B\-shield #502.

The tappet wrench is a Vlchek Chro-Moly 90A (7/16 x 17/32).

The 6-inch steel rule is a Browne & Sharp Model No. 316 Tempered No. 4 (8ths &16ths, 32nds & 64ths on the flip side)

The prize of the day is the 1940 Bluejackets' Manual. Many of you know by now that my pop was a quartermaster (ship's pilot) on the USS Newman, DE-205 (Destroyer ******), in WWII. When he died my brothers and I amicably split up a lot of his coolest stuff and one of them got his copy. Yeah, I teared up when I saw it and I am tearing up again right now, honestly. Really happy I ran into one. Good chapter on marlinspike, but there are a ton of interesting figures and plates. See Pics 2 & 3.

Thanks pfaustus. It wasn't estate sale prices. I paid $180 in total. The rabbet plane is 19th century. Never figured I'd own a Bedrock either. All great users for me! I'm happy.

It doesn't have "STEEL SCREW" or the patent dates forged-in either. See a No. 4 I just found a few weeks ago on the Peck, Stowe, and Wilcox thread, here. Yours might also be later, after they decided to simplify the markings to the "P.S.& W." marking on the wingnut, which mine does not have. A variant, for sure, earlier or later remains to be seen.

Good points, Lugz. That’s why I said “maybe.” I think they sold wrought steel and cast screw versions, and this one looks cast to me because of the voids. Removing the forged-in name and address is a logical sequence, as it probably reduces labor, seconds, or both. Plus the absence of the patent date; I think you’re right. I don’t have access to many PS&W catalog pdfs, so limited research potential here.

Lugz, congrats on the Bluejacket Manual. That's a cool connection to your dad, and a handy reference for al sorts of stuff; I just picked up a coupe copies of the 1943 version.

This is a pic of last week and this weeks' hauls. Poorly posed, I might add.

My alternative theory comments were in the "maybe" category, too, LS, just nuttin' it through with you out loud. I've had a copy of the Peck, Stowe, and Wilcox No. 20 catalog from the old Blackburn Tools website for years, but it won't help us here. It was clearly published after the oval PEXTO logo was trademarked (1915), probably in 1920 or 1921 (given the roughly synchronous correlation between the No. 26T in AA's library to the 1927 date that AA provides for it), while our clamps were clearly much earlier than that.

Seriously, you probably haven't noticed, but I've been looking for a Williams 3/8-inch drive set box for several years now! I have a near-complete Bantam set. I can assure you that what you found is a pre-1947 box and label remains (based on placement and shape). While I have been ideally looking for one with an intact label, having the box with a repro label is better than having no box at all! Let's talk!

EDIT: Please provide the measurements of the box. That actually looks too small. Either it's a smaller set, or someone put some Bantam tools in a Midget box.

Mike- nice Plomb find. Have you checked it to see if it accepts a breaker bar, extension, ratchet, etc.. in the female square? There is something very funny about those.

I found a matching long Cornwell a while back. 1-1/16 by 15/16.

Not a garage sale, but I pulled some cool stuff off a dump load today. Lots of consumables, rigid pipe cutter, some nice Craftsman and challenger wrenches, pliers, pipe wrenches, etc. plus a kiss toolbox!

Mike- I meant did you yourself physically try and put a tool in the square yet? Some of them will not accept a tool in the female end, as if the steel was not treated right. I have a collection of them and some will accept a tool while some don’t. Some that did previously no longer will. Very strange.

Thanks for posting that LS! I'll have to watch for one to add to my PS&W collection (and see if that clamp is in the catalog reprint I got from my GJSS one year.

Today's couple of nearby estate sales;

A Starrett 1 inch micrometer I can't identify that needs to soak in some Evaporust. If someone can help with that one let me know, all it says on the other side is "1 inch" and "1-64 015625 The L.S. Starrett Co Athol, Mass, U.S.A." on the body along with the ratios. $1, done!

And a no-name mini vise, a Peterson 7R vise grip with teeth in like new shape, and a bunch of drill bits with US made countersink bits, all for $5.

I saw a garage sale on my way home from work tonight and stopped in. I bought a Saylor-Beall air compressor for $5.00.

Well, it is a pretty small one.

It supposedly works, but I haven't tried it yet. Even if it doesn't, it will still be good for display purposes once I clean it up some. I think it's made out of lead...I could barely pick it up to put it in the trunk of my car.

I also got a nice pair of Diamalloy diagonal cutters and two old metal 1 gallon gas cans for 50 cents each.

A couple of weeks ago I hit a moving/estate sale where the guy had sold the home he grew up. Had a good sized shop where he did welding some auto repair. I'd seen an ad previously on CL where the ad was all of TWO sentences, no pics. Basically said "Blacksmith tools for sale." I flew right by it. This was the guy. Of course, I'm there after the fact those few weeks ago. I asked if he had any vises and he said 2 Rock Islands (5" or 6") and a couple of anvils. I believe whoever bought the vises paid $100 for both. I didn't ask what he sold the anvils for but I'm sure it was cheap. Anyway, I had a decent pick of loose tools those few weeks ago but he had an old metal storage shelf with drawers and trays that I couldn't get out of my head but I didn't follow up. Earlier this week he texted me and said he found a woodworking book he'd like me to have if I wanted to come get it - "Operation of Common Woodworking Machines" by Herman Hjorth. I asked if he still had that shelf and he said he did. I headed out there this afternoon.

The storage rack measures 64" x 25" x 12". The drawers were scattered all over the shop but in the end we found 24 of them and 4 of the trays which just might be the exact right number. The 4 trays all fit into one shelf right in the middle. The drawers go above and below those and the top and bottom most shelves are what they are - no drawers or trays. Most of them had nuts, bolts, screws, wingnuts, washers, toggle switches or something in them and he said he'd prefer I take those as well. The trays all have "Equipto" on them but I can't find it anywhere else, not on the drawers. The gray color certainly looks like it could be Equipto. Does anyone have a storage rack like this or seen them who might know who made it?

In addition, I got old branded cans of cotter pins; a lifetime supply (largish can almost full) of graphite; a 3450 RPM Craftsman motor that runs nice and quiet; a big roll of Carborundum 60 grit sanding belt cloth, at least 6" wide; a couple of hacksaws; a 1-2 gallon vintage gas can (hoping someone can tell me what the emblem/logo on the paper label would have been, looks like it starts with a "k"??); some kind of brake tool that I'll never use; a cool old Ever-Ready machine oil can; 3 new still in the boxes in the box Norton Course oilstones; an old horse hair bench brush; and just before loading up he then came back to the shop with a couple of "Nail Information" boards from a small town Chevy dealer outside Austin he wanted me to have. Super Cool "Courtesy of Your Friendly Chevy Dealer"!

I won't be able to get all the pics in this comment so I'll quickly follow with a few more pics. Total cost today? The gas it took me to drive there and back. Super nice guy!

Was able to check out an Estate Sale outside my area while on an errand. I found a Stanley Yankee push drill, a chucking reamer that looks new, a thermometer, NOS Dodge water neck and gasket, Sears NF rethreading die set, 009 VW distributor, Jacobs chuck NIB, machinist scale and a clutch tool for the motorcycles. All in for $20.00

I haven't cleaned any rust off it yet to see a brand name yet. The red box is simonsen, and the other is a craftsman. Some of the wrenches are Craftsman and proto, there are a few tools that are Ford. The brake spring pliers are Plomb.

Longhorn, it sounds like you need to take that guy to a steak dinner!

After my picking yesterday morning, I went past a local retirement home, where I enjoyed coffee with an acquaintance. He flew B24s in Europe during WW2, B29s in Korea and was a maintenance officer in Vietnam; during WW2, he was checked out on about every AAF aircraft you can think of. Very interesting to talk with, and sharp as a tack!

Went to a nearby estate sale with SWMBO this morning. They had some garden stuff I thought she'd be interested in and I had hopes there'd be an unadvertised workshop in the basement. Alas, no such luck. We walked through the place, and saw a really cool claw-foot oak kitchen table that was being used as a porch coffee table. We passed, as we have enough projects already. SWMBO decided she didn't need anything there for the prices they were asking, so we left empty handed. However, I got points for spending the morning with my best girl, so I consider it a successful trip anyways.
