I took the rest of the craftsman DP apart. What struck me most is how faded and dirty the paint is compared to what was hiding under the aluminium cover.

I had a custom paint made for the Craftsman drill press to match the original paint. Can't wait for this thing to be painted!

I got my new capacitor in the mail. I also purchased a new base for the motor off ebay. After changing the capacitor, the issue with starting seemed to persist. I thought maybe it's some kind of mechanisms in the motor that decides if to use the cap or not, really just shooting in the dark here. I messed with a screw driver in the motor for a bit and sure enough it started working with either of the capacitors! Hurray, now I have a working motor...

You try sanding the contacts/points on the clutch switch? that to me would be the most likely reason it wouldn't start (no power to starting windings).

If not I would at least do that to keep it from having the issue again.

I found this saw a year ago at a local thrift store. Immediately caught my attention! It is in a METAL box! The documents with it are pretty cool.

I've been lusting after a Craftsman 5196 vise for quite some time. They never turn up out here. Better not let me visit your shop otherwise it may follow me home. :)

I got up early today and took an extra trip this morning. Picked up a Craftsman 150 DP with Vari-slo and 1/3 Dunlap motor.

I got the pulled out of the Craftsman 150 DP and figured out the bearings need replacement. For now I put the pulley with bearings from the 100 in there. Here's a video of running the Vari-slo:
Seems to work pretty well.

Some progress on the Craftsman 100 DP. Two layers of primer and one layer of paint so far. I used one full can of paint so far, so I think the second one I have will be sufficient.

It's interesting how different the paint looks compared with the fainted paint, but it actually matches the paint on the bottom of the base pretty well.

I didn't want to have two machines taken apart at once, but I will have to take the 150 apart too in order to move the Vari-slo to the 100.

I checked on the paint last night. Looking pretty good, but it was still a little sticky, which surprised me since it was baking in the sun all day. I checked again this morning and paint is not sticky anymore and overall I'm happy with it so far. I might do a second layer tonight if time permits.

I might have to do the head frame in two more steps. I sprayed it having it sitting on the back and need to do one more layer like that. Then I need to pain the back...

The Craftsman 100 DP project is coming together nicely and falling in place one piece at a time. The paint turned out great and was worth the extra money.

I'm working on cleaning up the quill/splindle. The next step is to clean up the Vari-slo.

I ordered new belts and they should arrive later this week.

Drill press is almost complete. Everything moves and spins freely :)

I'm waiting for the belts to come in the mail before putting up the vari-slo.

I picked up this jointer for $25 with the intention to use the motor in a DP. But now what do I do with a jointer? :p The gentleman even threw a smaller compressor in for free!

That motor have oil hole cups/caps at the ends? If so then it’s not good for use in a drill press. Those style motors should only be run horizontally for proper lubrication.

Hm, sounds like that wasn't such a good idea then...

The Craftsman 100 DP is almost done! I put the Dunlap motor (that came from the 150) there for now till I finish the original motor. I still need to do some adjustments on the Vari-slo. The whole setup runs very quiet, that's very good.

Clean up the jointer and either use it or flip it. That motor is somewhat anemic for jointer.

Correct. Here is that motor [D] in the 1950 catalog. The description states horizontal use only.

There are other later motors with sleeve bearings and cradle/resilient mounts that can be mounted in any position. See the description for motor [3] in the 1966 catalog.

Hm, sounds like that wasn't such a good idea then...

For $25, that was a great idea!

I agree with Frank, clean it up and flip or use it. Only $25 invested into it so you should be able to make a couple bucks off it.

I got a "little 5195 brother" (on the right) for my Craftsman 5196 vise. Turns out it's in pretty much perfect condition, just needs a good clean up.

I picked up this nice Craftsman 5162 4" vise made by Rock Island from local CL. Pretty cool piece, all original without any repairs.

I picked up two smaller toolboxes today well worth the $35 I paid. All sorts of brands - Cman, Snapon, Plomb, Plumb hammer, None Better, New Britain, Vlchek (Vlček), Bonney, Channel lock, SK, P&C,...still need to go through it all. One of the boxes turned out to be SK. Everything is dirty and griesy. This are oficially my first Snapon wrenches.

That has to be the newest none better wrench I have ever seen. Nice finds.
