Simmonds Vixen auto body file

Simonds. :) Simonds Saw and Simmons Herdware often get confused, although not to the level as Plumb and Plomb.

My brother used to work at Simonds, I have a lifetime supply of their small files. :)

They used to make pretty nice handsaws as well, I've picked up a few of them at sales.

Here is my small take from a Tahoe moving sale yesterday. The Ridgid 14” pipe wrench’s date code is obscured but it’s probably from 1934.

Slow day following a dead week for sales...

All except the pony clamps came from the first stop. Everything else was a bust.

Craftsman, Proto, PowrKraft, Thorsen, SK wrenches (Missed the pic for a 7/16 Plvmb smooth-non-pepbbe), Starret Drift, Crecent center punch, Berylco driver and I think the bottom one is Vlchek (V inside a shield).

I didn't even set the alarm LOL. Woke up at 9. The one sale that looked interesting still had nothing in the pictures I wanted. Will get the storage cabinets out and sort out the drawers and take pictures. Spent enough money yesterday anyways LOL. Better keep it for beer later!

Plans changed LOL!

A Facebook Marketplace ad popped up with a rolling rack for horse tack I will repurpose by adding shelves and a small pallet rack with beams for 2 shelves (42" deep, 94" tall, and 112" long with the end pieces) and I made an offer for it for $100 which was accepted. After picking it up I realized the estate sale I skipped was close by. It was 3 PM so it was already picked over but I still found a few goodies. Spent #14 at the estate sale.

Pic 1: The rolling rack is behind the table, the lightning and rain was coming and I didn't want to stand outside and re-arrange for pictures LOL!

Pic 2: Dunlap DOE's, 7mm Craftsman =V= combo, spinner rod for flex handle and Sears Roebuck red wrench drawer holders.

Pic 3: Lufkin folding ruler, General slide caliper, 2 Indestro DBE's, Itima (Germany) Whitworth DBE, P & C DOE wrench and behind that is Proto, the top ratchet is a 1/4" drive Thorsen.

I hit a pretty good estate sale today with lots of tools. A lot of them were newer, but I still came away with some oldies. I'll post stuff in the correct vintage threads when it's all cleaned up, but here's the haul. $40 for:
- small Kennedy tool box
- SK 3/8 set box
- wrenches from plomb, p&c, barcalo
- sockets and accessories from plomb, p&c, new Britain, SK, proto, etc.
- some cool Blackhawk pliers
- other misc. all greasy as heck.

P.S. there's a mysterious plomb piece I'll post up in the plomb thread.

Posted this Blackhawk Industrial Automobile and Socket Wrenches cabinet before when a local antique store wanted $395 for it. It was marked down to $225 yesterday and I got it for $56.25 today at their 75% off sale. Really lucky to have a friend working there who put it on the sold table for me. a555282299a5826eec77253d75b34e1d.jpgac8c20e0f960e99acff5934657220c8d.jpg56470200d5f4efcc007b1a63a240e1da.jpg5a8d3296ef23eed94b7f320da5eedbd5.jpg03cc6bdca1312713aea9f4a623f4e3df.jpg4e223e28b92412c4bcc90214e24c4c0a.jpg

Wow! That is a terrific snag!

EDIT: You know how old that is, right? That's mid to late 1920's. I'm posting a link in the Blackhawk thread. That is one of the best finds of the year. I don't remember you posting it before. Glad you persisted.

EDIT2: I posted a link in the Blackhawk thread to your post above, jvlyons, but you should really post those photos in the Blackhawk thread after my post. That thing is the most bragworthy piece of Blackhawk I have seen in a long time. A link is here.

Can someone tell me about these sockets that have a star on each side of the size? Are they from WWII?

Also I’ve never seen the socket with the adjustable like spanner wrench top on it

That's a valve lapper. It adjusts for different size valves. Before suction cups, valves had little indents on either side of the valve seat. You'd put your compound in the valve, stick those pins in the indents, and the drive end on a 1/2-inch square drive speeder and go back and forth with the speeder.

The star sockets are probably Bog.

For all those who don't venture very far away from this thread or the General Discussion section, I just posted this in the Blackhawk thread in the Vintage section... Check out the pic below (which is an excerpt from a 1926 Blackhawk catalog), then page back and look at the jvlyons' Blackhawk cabinet again!

Thanks for the info. Yes, I thought it was 1920s, but have all of my old tool catalogs on my computer at work. I've been watching this one for about 6 months. I've got to find the sign for the top now and the tools to fill it.

So, checking CL last night I spotted one great looking sale, where in the pics there were Proto woodies and all sorts of good looking things. Well, got there when they were setting up and those good looking things where in a so-so stack that they wanted $350 for and they weren't up for parting it out yet. But! there was a ton of other good stuff, so, for $65 I got the following:
A Bonney (?) wrench roll from the twenties for $3
ta66hu.jpg

A Craftsman Heritage 1/4 set for $10, complete but someone painted it blue!
2ufc5ye.jpg

A Tubing Appliance Corporation set, complete for $20.
20u1n28.jpg

The tool box I used to carry everything to my truck had this at the bottom, among misc. metal scraps; Snap-on and Craftsman deep sockets, MAC and Blue Point drivers, 4" Cresent adjustable, Craftsman BB and Snap-on Hex keys, among other things. $2 but I am not sure who manufactured this box.
30de2dl.jpg

A Last but not least, this box:
qmytlt.jpg

2wret7m.jpg

4pui4x.jpg

A '28 Snap-on 5/8 drive set, no. 202B. Missing only the T-bar, which I picked up about 2-3 years ago in Stockton for a buck. This set was $30.

And, at the fourth stop...

Forgot to post the rest of the finds. The garden tools and Weiner dog mail holder came from an estate sale for $5. The large tin toy gas station came from a local toy store for $100 and it has all of the orginal gas pumps and other parts. Picked up the wood handled multi tool with some funky coating on it, but all the bit are still in the handle for $3 and the Langley Fish De Lier for $2.c115b383bbbbc016673659bb409d31c8.jpg04cf494db59fc5b7a37cef81a96959ad.jpg5298bec5b8c66e1af75b7b442a297e42.jpg

Hit a couple garage sales today and got a few things. No super bargains but fair prices I thought.

Picture 1: Heyco adjustable pliers out of a BMW trunk tool kit 75 cents, an Estwing framing hammer $2.00, a Stanley cat's paw nail puller brand new never used $1.00, a nice stiff Red Devil putty knife 25 cents, an old MAC tools wood handle screwdriver 25 cents, two Vise-Grips from the original factory in Nebraska $1.50 each (you can never have too many Vise-Grips. :) ) The one on the right is a little rusty so I'll have to toss it in the Evaporust tank for a while.

An aside on Vise-Grips: I was re-reading an old Hot Rod magazine from 1957 last night, and noticed a little news release on Vise Grips announcing the addition of that little second handle that releases the grip. So, if you have a pair that doesn't have that little second handle it's from 1957 or earlier.

attachment.php

Picture 2: A Maglight $2.00. I'll have to investigate getting the LED conversion for it. Two 6" and two 3" clamps, no names on them but a couple small stamped symbols I'll have to investigate further to see if I can ID the manufacturer. They're definitely old and pretty good quality. $5.00 each for the big ones and $3.00 each for the small ones. Finally, a little vial of Daisy BB gun oil.

attachment.php

Picture 3: A closeup of the Daisy oil. I also got a couple small two drawer Steelcase card file cabinets ($4.00 each, not pictured - they'll be good to use for small parts storage.) One of the drawers was jammed up so it wouldn't close fully. I pulled out the drawer when I got home and dug out a bunch of old nails, staples, cotter keys and other miscellaneous junk, and this oil vial was in there as well. It's maybe not that special but I thought it was kind of neat. Now I just need to get a Daisy BB gun so I can oil it. :)

Great - Epic garage sale today! Got there plenty early in a rain storm. They were setting up tents in the back yard and I asked if they were open for business. Guy says if you've got cash then we're open! Had the garage to myself for about 1/2hr until another guy showed up. I emptied my wallet... had to use a charge card to buy a cup of coffee on the way home...

My second and third stops turned out to be busts, but not the fourth! I wasn't expecting anything really, as there were no tools in the pics, just a lot of old junk, some of which looked OK...
Got there and headed into the garage, where I saw one of those super cheap rollers. Not expecting much, I go through the drawers, finding Snap-on and Plomb drivers, then looking around spotted a couple set boxes open against the wall. Go to look, and this is what I find for $10:
juwpk6.jpg

Open it up, and this awaits me:
30sj4hs.jpg

After getting rid of the dross, this is what I find:
34r94dk.jpg

Snap-on and BP wrenches and sockets, Plomp, Bonney, Industro, B&D and SK sockets, Brazing rod, an Acetylene wrench, an unknown socket driver that looks quality and a Snap-on 9/32 breaker bar. Waiting to pay, I looked at the stuff they had under glass and picked up the following for $5:
33nxcuc.jpg

Snap-on screw extractors (I think, never seen this type before from them) and SO hex keys (they are actually marked Snap-on!)

So, $80 spent all together. Not bad, and have an antique show to go to with the wife tomorrow!

Quite the haul there! That 3 Pc Snap On ratcheting screwdriver set is cool. If you are going to sell it please PM me!

Picked up a few spanners this weekend at a local second hand store. Had to rummage through a lot of junk but did manage to find some items of interest to me.

Furthermore if anyone has any information about the Canadian spanners as they don't seem to have any markers Mark's

Thanks in advance, jan367097f7668a57dbf2d9a4fd631039cd.jpg2a89ac0224491b3288ba6620d7e3e835.jpge8c27c9f06b917ff98e60d35178bd7d1.jpge5ba7c80b68a88ccb4a1dcfa10ea394c.jpgf300ad072e5f203dc7843d0686857cef.jpgd4409c68037a50dd9e8360f25fbc996b.jpg

So here are the items I have picked up over the last few weeks for $10 total

From Left to right:
8" Proto Los Angeles adjustable
10" Barcalo Buffalo adjustable
2-1/2" Welding/Wood clamp - marked Hargrave and Cincinnati Tool
CS Osbourne #33 Upholstery hammer
6" Quick Grip clamp - most expensive single item

Across the top:
Old tape measure
K-D #130 specialized tool ?

The K-D #130 is interesting - it's a flexi screwdriver with a slide out collar to surround and support a screw in the horizontal position. The bit it a ball-retention bit with a slotted head on one side and a hex bit on the other. Carb adjustment tool?

Is there a source of ball retention bits in phillip's / torx so I can use this tool for other purposes?

Cheers

Jim

Thanks for the info. Yes, I thought it was 1920s, but have all of my old tool catalogs on my computer at work. I've been watching this one for about 6 months. I've got to find the sign for the top now and the tools to fill it.

I have an early Blackhawk socket, 1/2" drive, 1/2" six point socket. Arrowhead with a circle inside with a B inside the circle.
