Anyone know anything about a "rex" vise?

Local vise for sale locally. I've never heard of one and an internet search really hasn't turned up anything. He says it's pre-war. Any insights concerning origin and value? No markings except "rex".

Niel,
you have a nice vise there. any idea of the jaw width size or the weight? how much is your seller asking for it?

that's a new name to me, but somebody around here might have one or some information on it. one thing a few stores did in the pre 60's era is have big vise companies make vises without their brand name on them and they would slap a sticker or have it in their company's box at their stores like they made them.

Craftsman had many companies make their vises and tools for instance. Since Rex looks like it's in the casting it might have been a little company or maybe a weathly guy that just wanted his name on a vise.

in any case it looks like a winner from the pictures and as always check for cracks, welds, missing parts before you buy it. the front jaw comes all the way out of these vises so you can inspect and turn over to check the threads on the screw too. when you do take the front jaw out remember that about half the weight is in that part so be ready to hold on to it and don't drop it.

I haven't seen it in person yet. The seller claims it has 4 inch jaws and weighs about 50 pounds. He has been told by someone that he could get $100. I'm thinking that is a bit much for an unknown brand name.

it's a good solid vise, but probably on the high end at $100 since it doesn't have a known name. rare is collectable and could be worth a bit more if you can figure out the story and it might be worth that. Several vise companies made that design of a vise so i'm guessing one of those made them for this company or person.

my 2 cents is get him down to the $60 to $70 range or keep looking for Prentiss, Morgan, Rock Island, Reed, Columbian or any of a number of other old US brand vises if you want to make your $100 vise an investment. of course you can hope to get a Wilton for $100, but they are getting harder to find.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you were close to me i'd give you several nice choices for $100 of vises you have heard of that only need a little spiffing up like that Rex does.

good luck

Casting looks very similar to a later production Prentiss Bulldog. Not sure if they ever manufactured for others.

Let's see what others come up with.
