I have been remiss in posting on my favorite online forum...

Reason: My wife had a Quadruple Coronary Bypass surgery, in June, and immediately started suffering every complication known to man --- Blood clots in her legs and lungs, infections in her vein harvest sites, pneumonia (twice), two bouts of irregular heart beat, very low blood pressure, etc., etc...

She spent a total of 81 days in the hospital...

She is now home, and is on the road to a full recovery...

And during this time we were barely missed by a hurricane/tropical storm...

And now Hurricane Michael is heading towards the Florida panhandle...

If the weather tea leaf readers are right, it will miss us by a tiny bit...I am praying for the folks east of us...This is a monster of a storm...

So, since I haven't posted but a few times in the last four months...

Congratulations!!!

Y'ALL DUN GUD!!!

All of you are continuing to rescue and restore these magnificent artifacts from America's great industrial and manufacturing past...

I saw the Craftsman 5190 series in the Sears store...

Should have bought one of each...

I'm now, back on the hunt for my 5198...

And a Reed 106, the four bolt hold down hole, variety...

And a Reed 406...

And a...

You understand...

I've attached two WWII surplus ads...Just so folks will know...What we were capable of when we were the "Arsenal of Democracy"...

All you folks in Michael's path, be careful, batten down everything, and know you're in our prayers...

Kevin let me know if you need any of the pics.

I need to come over and go through all your vises then that aught to fill the Spreadsheet. Should only take me a week. I have a 7" 207 Reed ready for you, came out pretty nice. It was challenging. Lost the pic;s on the dove tail repair.

Oldie, batten down the hatches. I am thinking of ya. I am restoring a Reed 106 this week. I'll save it for you. Adding new jaws and sprucing it up. Good to hear from ya. Maybe when I move to S Carolina I'll drop it off. I am winding down, just turned 62 and my knees and hands need a rest.

I think this is relevant to a South Carolina move...

Golf courses...

Can be dangerous...

Picture was taken on SC golf course...

I'll start saving, right away, for that 106...:thumbup:

62???...Damn, when I was 62, I was still a "Load"...Now, eleven years later, not so much...

Here's a small parker 973 I picked up. I just started the tear down on it for an overhaul. It shows surprisingly little use for being as old as it is. Im guessing these jaws started out smooth, the checkering looks almost hand filed. The only thing needing attention other than clean and paint is the collar screw is bent and needs to be replaced.

After missing out on a 150lb Prentiss and a 4 1/2" athol all in one weekend I had to start on something. Im suspecting Drives snagged them both before me on the local CL.

Nice story Mayer. To bad we are losing all this skill in building tools here in the USA. And you got a lesson in sharp tools, chamfering is a important step that was missed. I enjoyed the read.

Just got caught up from a week long hunting trip. Ditto what Dr Scott said!

Who would waste time on a Rock Island farmers vise  I had two with broken feet on the slide part. One had been brazed as seen in the first picture and the other was missing the whole bottom part. I cut off the remaining portion and screwed it from the bottom with 5/16 bolts on to a piece of 5/16" steel plate. I used a 3/4" OD copper coupling for a bushing in the dynamic jaw. The nut is held in place with a high tech fastening system of two wood wedges just like the factory used. There were no jaws originally, ( just machined surfaces ) so I made some out of brass.

For all their lack of usefulness, I like those. I just can't find one for less than stupid money...

Thanks kindly. That Paramo ended up cleaned up very nicely and after a BLO treatment is now my primary vise. Really great vise.

PS, I don't know if you saw it, but I put the dimensions of that Prentiss 53 1/2 hardy hole cutter - it's at the top of this page.

I picked up this Stephens coach makers vise a few weeks ago. I have never seen another coachmakers version like it. Love the look of the slide set.

Love the Stevens, Brad.---That's a rare find.---Only one I know of on this whole forum or anywhere.---You have a knack for finding unicorns.

I found this Little Columbian #63 1/2 Red Arrow. First one I’ve seen without the locking bars all bent up. Looks like the previous owner used it to hold painting items. I considered stripping the entire vise, but I actually like the character it has.

I gave it a quick scrub with Simple Green and a scotchbrite pad and removed all the old grease. Re-greased and mounted on a wood block I can clamp in my woodworking vise.

Oldie, good to hear from you and great to hear that things are going right for your wife now. You should ask Kevin to paint that 106 arrest-me-red before bring it to NC (if you're going to get your cake, might as well eat it :) )

So,

How much are you all paying for these vises?

They always seem to fetch more money here than other parts of the country (odd, due to my proximity to Erie/Buffalo area). I pay anywhere from $20 to $200, depending on what it is and it's condition. Wiltons are always on the top end of that scale, Columbians/Craftsmans at the lower end.

There is a lot of nice old iron around, but most people selling are delusional about the value....I have to let most of it go to somebody who has money to burn.

I had a long-standing rule about never paying more than $40, but I broke that rule this year, twice in fact. I currently have 7 vises, averaging $57.86, edited cuz I forgot pipe vise.

Nice score Honza, from the Cameron Park estate sale?

Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk

Yes! I was so surprised no one else even looked at it! I think it was a score for that price.

I saw it in the pictures on the estate sale CL post last night, so I thought it was worth stopping by.

Big old nice vises are hard to come by for me, as the closest old industrial area is 4 hours away. Which means if I want it I have to pay for it before it gets scooped up by someone else (I really have no idea if there are too many guys around here who are looking, but I prefer not to take the chance).

That being said, I typically have paid around $100 for vises north of 100lbs (wilton 1750 being the exception to the rule, as it is not close to 100lbs).

Mailman delivered a kind of unique-ish little homeowner's exposed-screw vise today made by Oswego. Well, maybe not unique, but it's the only one made by Oswego I've seen. Other than missing the base (anyone got an extra 3.5" Dia homeowner's base laying around??) and a broken pipe jaw, it's in pretty decent shape too.

So,

How much are you all paying for these vises?

As others have already said, that is too general a question. Personally, I have paid anywhere from nothing up to $400. (I have about 75 vises in my collection)
For some, I have emptied my wallet after driving for hours.
I have traded away rare and valuable vises in exchange for other rare and valuable vises.
For one old Reed that comes to mind, I pulled it out of a dumpster a few blocks from my house following up on a kindly tip from our mailman.

The most I have ever paid for any vise is $150, and that was for an Emmert U5 style patternmakers vise. The next most expensive vise was a Reed 106 with replaceable jaws. All of the other vises I have purchased cost less than $90.

I'm about a 60 minute drive from Oswego, so you see them pop up around here somewhat frequently, although I have yet to see a larger vise and/or one that is in good shape made by them. It's not a huge town, so I don't think they made huge quantities like the Buffalo/Erie forges did.

On a side note, that town is not a place you want to be in the winter....it gets very cold, very windy, and they measure snowfall by the foot (not inches).

I feel for the people in the "Catastrophic Damage", that was Hurricane Michael...

I have a friend, another retired USAF type, who lives in Port St. Joe, Florida...He boarded up his house, and evacuated to another friends house in Mexico Beach...He went to ground zero!!!...Talked to him, and he said "I have never been so scared in my entire life!!!!"...They are all OK...Now to rebuild...

Thanks for all the good wishes...

My Wife had one artery that was 90% closed, and considering that they one in question has an ID of less than a 1/10", that is as close to dying, as you can get...There is a fantastic Cardiac Center, here, and they worked their magic...All will be well!!!

Thanks again, for the positive feelings, they are much appreciated...

And now...

On to the 5198 quest...

Old,

Glad to hear both your wife is doing well and that your friend made it through the storm. Regarding your quest...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Cr...se-Bench-Machinist-Vice-w-4-Jaws/132744807530

That one sure isn't free, but it's a darn good base for a restoration.

It seems that almost every vise on eBay that is even remotely close to being reasonably priced is for local pick up only. Even at the asking price plus a reasonable shipping cost, I would have seriously consider getting this vise but it is for local pickup only.

Gman,

Be sure when you're perusing eBay to read the descriptions. Sometimes the seller will say they are willing to ship at buyer's expense, even if they put "local pick up". For that previous link, in particular, here is the last paragraph of the description:

"(If you need to have this shipped, please let me know prior to bidding and I can change the auction to reflect the cost with shipping charges. I packaged it up, and it measures approx. 18" L x 14" W x 11" T and weighs right at 61 lbs AFTER being packaged.)."

I say scoop it up...it's tempting me because I really want one of those vises, but I had one delivered yesterday and one is coming today!

Old, bet your friend never thought of himself as a real live storm chaser.---That would be my kind of luck too, to evacuate to the eye of the storm.

Very glad to hear that the Misses is on the mend.---I know that was a very worrisome time for you and scary for both of you.
