Man that 9 1/2 is the Holmes! I'll find one somewhere!!
Kevin let me know if you need any of the pics.
Oldie, batten down the hatches. I am thinking of ya. I am restoring a Reed 106 this week. I'll save it for you. Adding new jaws and sprucing it up. Good to hear from ya. Maybe when I move to S Carolina I'll drop it off. I am winding down, just turned 62 and my knees and hands need a rest.

Here's a small parker 973 I picked up. I just started the tear down on it for an overhaul. It shows surprisingly little use for being as old as it is. Im guessing these jaws started out smooth, the checkering looks almost hand filed. The only thing needing attention other than clean and paint is the collar screw is bent and needs to be replaced.
After missing out on a 150lb Prentiss and a 4 1/2" athol all in one weekend I had to start on something. Im suspecting Drives snagged them both before me on the local CL.![]()
Here are the Patterns that I picked up at the sale in Erie Pa. (these are used to make molds)![]()

Nice story Mayer. To bad we are losing all this skill in building tools here in the USA. And you got a lesson in sharp tools, chamfering is a important step that was missed. I enjoyed the read.
Who would waste time on a Rock Island farmers viseI had two with broken feet on the slide part. One had been brazed as seen in the first picture and the other was missing the whole bottom part. I cut off the remaining portion and screwed it from the bottom with 5/16 bolts on to a piece of 5/16" steel plate. I used a 3/4" OD copper coupling for a bushing in the dynamic jaw. The nut is held in place with a high tech fastening system of two wood wedges just like the factory used. There were no jaws originally, ( just machined surfaces ) so I made some out of brass.
Just got caught up from a week long hunting trip. Ditto what Dr Scott said!
I picked up this Stephens coach makers vise a few weeks ago. I have never seen another coachmakers version like it. Love the look of the slide set.
I have been remiss in posting on my favorite online forum...
Reason: My wife had a Quadruple Coronary Bypass surgery, in June, and immediately started suffering every complication known to man --- Blood clots in her legs and lungs, infections in her vein harvest sites, pneumonia (twice), two bouts of irregular heart beat, very low blood pressure, etc., etc...
She spent a total of 81 days in the hospital...
She is now home, and is on the road to a full recovery...
And during this time we were barely missed by a hurricane/tropical storm...
And now Hurricane Michael is heading towards the Florida panhandle...
If the weather tea leaf readers are right, it will miss us by a tiny bit...I am praying for the folks east of us...This is a monster of a storm...
So, since I haven't posted but a few times in the last four months...
Congratulations!!!
Y'ALL DUN GUD!!!
All of you are continuing to rescue and restore these magnificent artifacts from America's great industrial and manufacturing past...
I saw the Craftsman 5190 series in the Sears store...
Should have bought one of each...
I'm now, back on the hunt for my 5198...
And a Reed 106, the four bolt hold down hole, variety...
And a Reed 406...
And a...
You understand...
I've attached two WWII surplus ads...Just so folks will know...What we were capable of when we were the "Arsenal of Democracy"...
All you folks in Michael's path, be careful, batten down everything, and know you're in our prayers...
So,
How much are you all paying for these vises?

Mailman delivered a kind of unique-ish little homeowner's exposed-screw vise today made by Oswego. Well, maybe not unique, but it's the only one made by Oswego I've seen.
I feel for the people in the "Catastrophic Damage", that was Hurricane Michael...
I have a friend, another retired USAF type, who lives in Port St. Joe, Florida...He boarded up his house, and evacuated to another friends house in Mexico Beach...He went to ground zero!!!...Talked to him, and he said "I have never been so scared in my entire life!!!!"...They are all OK...Now to rebuild...
Thanks for all the good wishes...
My Wife had one artery that was 90% closed, and considering that they one in question has an ID of less than a 1/10", that is as close to dying, as you can get...There is a fantastic Cardiac Center, here, and they worked their magic...All will be well!!!
Thanks again, for the positive feelings, they are much appreciated...
And now...
On to the 5198 quest...
Old,
Glad to hear both your wife is doing well and that your friend made it through the storm. Regarding your quest...

That one sure isn't free, but it's a darn good base for a restoration.

It seems that almost every vise on eBay that is even remotely close to being reasonably priced is for local pick up only. Even at the asking price plus a reasonable shipping cost, I would have seriously consider getting this vise but it is for local pickup only.
