Hit the mid week flea on the way to doc appointment this morning.
Picked up this 4-1/2” Wilton for $125. It has the pipe jaws. Over great shape, missing the swivel handles.

This vise is for my son. I’m proud that I’m enabling him and that he’s in a position that he can spend the money on one.

Other find is a CM 1/2”x9/16” DBE shorty wrench. I think a I have a couple!
It’s a double vv.

... For the POY, I constructed a trophy out of things I found at the flea market! ...

The Lugzcademy Awards?! I'm thinking you went big on this one - like at Packer Fastener in Green Bay.

I did not "go big" - mainly because I still have to ship this thing to the winner on my own nickel! But a part of it is threaded (if you want a clue)! :) I would say I went creative, organic, and representative. Three automotive tools, one cannibalized piece of militaria, some brazing, and the use of some punches and a leather mallet were involved. But that's all I'm saying until the unveiling!

The 9/16" by 1/2" shorty DBE were included in the mechanic's tool kits back in the day, so they're fairly common. I've got one myself.

PRIZE #3: BEST SCORE!

If you recall from Day 1, Post #2, this category was defined like this: “It might be one item worth $1,000 that you got for $1 or a trailer load of stuff for $1,000 worth 3 times that. Doesn’t matter. Biggest score, most bang for the buck, value-wise, qualitatively, in my opinion. (I do take bribes!).” I’ll just point out that it’s still not too late for the bribes! (I need a Williams Bantam box. A Snap-on HandiKit K-10 box. A Plomb 5200 box…. The list goes on! Just sayin’!)

Two caveats:

(1) One man's 'score' is another man's 'bore'!

(2) There were LOTS of smokin’ deals this year. From $5 for a Baldor motor (mattblast) to $50 for a Crafty 3/4 HP grinder and stand (Boofer) to $100 for a Ryobi pressure washer (EOC Jason). Way too many for me to give proper credit to for a 'Job Well Done, Boys!'

But here are just a few that rose to HONORABLE MENTION level in my opinion and my LGB:

Bobcat753’s Delta Milwaukee DP – for FREE, posted in August, Post #5731, linked here. It’s hard to beat FREE!

attachment.php

Stuart in MN’s Sears & Roebuck wall safe from the 1950’s – for FREE, also posted in August, Post #6315, linked here. Ditto!

attachment.php

WNYFlyer’s Union machinists’ chest – fully loaded with vintage machinist’s tools - for FREE, posted in February, Post #1282, linked here, and then again with photos of all the drawers open showing all the tools, in Post #1300, linked here. Ditto, again!

attachment.php

Outlaw’s Peter Wright anvil, posted in January, Post # 710, linked here. I know you guys are probably getting sick of seeing me mention it, but not only was it one of the OLDEST finds this year, (and let’s face it, probably could’ve also been in the RAREST category, too), he got it for $20!! For a 44 lb anvil! This was the first big score of the year.

attachment.php

jvlyons99205’s c. 1926 Blackhawk tools cabinet for $56, posted in early September, Post #6207, linked here. Tough to say how much this is worth, but I know I would pay what the variety store originally wanted ($350!) in a Quick-Disconnect second, and I think it could be worth twice that to the right collector!

attachment.php

NJMarty’s Remington 12 (and Remington 31 barrel), posted in July, Post #5204, linked here. As Beemer put it at the time, “Heck, throw out the little green book and shut down the internets. We are done here, folks!” And rightly so!

attachment.php

But, while I appreciate and share that sentiment, while I love a good gun deal as much as the next guy and NJMArty’s was stupendous (the side-action, solid-breech, hammerless, takedown, side-ejection rifle is legendary with shooters and collectors and worth a few tens of thousands of pretty pennies), this is the Garage Journal, dealing mainly with automotive tools, and we had one of the biggest tool-set scores I have seen here on GJ, not only this year, but in the six years I have been here - and I just HAD to go with that...

Needless to say, these are HIGHLY prized by the most serious (i.e, car club type) VW Ghia and Porsche collectors. He paid $10. I don’t know if he still has it or if he flipped it to replenish his collecting fund. But WorthPoint says one sold last year for just shy of $2,000! As dkroth said at the time, “I think you may have just won one of Lugnutz's GJ 2018 Garage Sale Thread awards. Seriously.” He was right. Like the yari, I was just waiting for something to come along and knock it off the pedestal. Never happened. A dream find. A once in a lifetime find.

No question on that Hazet set! Congrats TinMedic

But there were some greats in that category. I must have missed the machinists box WNYFlyer picked up

Definitely agree the Hazet had it!

But now I'm in the position of "always a brides maid, never a bride!"

Seriously, no hard feelings at all! Congrats to Tin Medic! Well deserved!

Heres the Williams spinners I have found. One is like new the other like used.
Both of those are 9/32-inch drive. When Williams moved to 1/4-inch drive just before WWII, they changed the M- (for 'Midget') model numbering system to NM- (for 'New Midget', not kidding!).

You’ll see in the next week.
...to be fair you have not seen the large amount of plomb, proto and p&c I have found the past few months
It's a Plomb Empire throwdown!

Smokeshow:

I want to make sure you saw this, as I am very curious about this 1/4-inch drive version of the 9/32-inch drive WF-6 that you were talking about...

I know they made both sizes with the 1/4 being super rare...
Dang. So rare I didn't even know it existed! The only all-steel midget spinner-extension I am aware of is the "WF-6", which is 9/32-inch drive, and that is considered very rare. What is the 47XX model number on the 1/4-inch version?!

Lugz, I am fairly certain that plomb made a 1/4 spinner but I could be wrong ? I think I saw someone on here with one and am fairly certain one sold on eBay last year. The seller was adamant that it was 1/4 not 9/32... I know the plomb thread discussed it. I will have research this but it might be quicker if we asked the question on the plomb thread.., I will ask it [emoji51]

CB-nice Wilton! Man am I glad you ran into that and not me. I wonder who the seller was.

Congrats to the winners. Forgot about Tin’s nice set.. I nominated a few things, like Outlaw’s anvil (killer find) for one, that you bomb dropped on us like Wile E. Coyote in the start of the thread, and the beautiful Blackhawk cabinet.

I was trying to shield the members of my small, informal, PM 'help' panel from rotten tomatoes, 3eeb. :) But now that you outed yourself, haha!, it was very affirming to see you guys pick out a few of the same things as my Little Green Book throughout the year, but more importantly, you identified one thing that wasn't in the book! It's coming up as an HM in the next and final category: BEST HAUL.

A programming note on that point. I'm on the road today, back late, so for those expecting that ceremony tonight, it will be tomorrow night instead.

Lugz and All,
I'm enjoying the **** out of the note taking, attention to detail, prize giveaways. Lugz you've been a great host this year. My pickings were slim this year compared to other years but this thread is still a hoot.

Probably my last Plomb pickup for the year. Between the WF-6 and this, it was a great WF year.

We hit two distant and minimally productive estate sales today and spent $4.00 (not counting gas). Here is what we came home with. The bent P&C speeder and Bonney sockets will go to username to test his straightening skills. The wartime 8 point S-K socket was one I didn’t have. The only interesting item from the second sale was a Keystone socket set box that my wife spotted, which is the first Keystone anything I’ve ever seen in person.

Probably spit roasted on a bayonet, over a flaming jerry can of diesel fuel. :wtf:
What gauge metal on that jerry can ^ ……...:bounce:
Haha!

Thanks! I was excited when I saw I had won a chicken dinner with Lugz!! : )
Chicken, schmicken. 32oz steak at Zentners Daughters in San Angelo.

... but this thread is still a hoot.
It was a blast. Did you see WNYFlyers FREE Union box? Full of tools? I need his mirror for my box!! :)

I have both Plvmb and Proto 1/4" Speeders, No. 4780.
I thought I might have one. I recalled something like that in the shop. Found it today, it was an Armstrong 1/4" speeder. It looks very similar. Oh well. :)
The question isn't about speeders, but spinners/drivers. Plomb made a 47xx (I'm on a train, can't recall model number) with an amber composite handle, a 1/4 inch drive male drive stud on the end of a steel shank, and a 1/4 inch female drive opening in the **** end of the handle, as an extension. They also made one for the USAAF Wright Field contracts, model number WF-6. That one is all steel with a rotating grip, like the Williams/Armstrong, but the male drive stud and female drive opening in the **** end were 9/32, not 1/4. Tin Medic found one in January. Pic in my RARE prize post. Smoke thinks they may have made the latter ALSO in 1/4 drive, but I suspect those are misidentified 9/32.

Ah! I misunderstood.

I have two of the Amber handled drivers 4769. The top one was my dad's and the plastic handle is stamped not the shank. The other I believe is newer.

I can't help you on the latter driver mentioned.

I do have a stubby 9/32 driver - no female drive though, that has a sort of mushroom shaped head, but its not Plvmb or Proto empire. I can't recall what brand it was and its not in my notes... Someone else on GJ has one also.

EDIT: DECO - 44B8809, and it has my one and only 9/32 socket - a Hinsdale.in 3/16

Interesting 'small haul' at my Early Bird this morning.

The early morning light and my phone camera doesn't do the satchel justice. That's oilcloth, not canvas, and looks homemade to me. The lady vendor said it was Civil War era. I didn't want to offend her, but I doubt it. It's old, for sure. Maybe turn of the century. Plus, I'm thinking, 'if it's Civil War era, why are you asking $20 and willing to let me talk you down to $12?' She was a house liquidator. The deceased oldtimer was a gun guy. He had all kinds of homemade rifle stocks in various stages of being finished, all kinds of barrels, fitted for the stocks and unfitted, etc. The satchel was in a box with all kinds of leatherworks, including sheaths and scabbards and slings and stuff. I could be wrong. It would definitely be a case of 'happy to be wrong.' If anyone has any expertise in this area, please chime in.

The adjustable crescent-type wrench is a 1947 8" J.P. Danielson-made Plomb PLVMBALVY.

The half-moon wrench is a Craftsman V. A little to the right of my niche, but close enough for my half-moon collection.

Probably the last good Plomb piece this year. It’s been a good WF year.

Nice find. I generally don't buy what I don't need, but that DP would have gone home with me regardless. And sub $20 is a definite "You ****."

I really couldnt say no. The wife couldnt say much at that price. A guy came up to me and said thanks for making up his mind for him. Ive always wanted an atlas drill press.
