Thanks to the GJ veterans over the years mentioning RI 577 and praising it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have jumped on it.

So this Wilton C1 had been on the board for a while so I took a chance and offered him $200 for it. He accepted the offer so I drove right up. When I got there he pointed to a 500S that he said I could have either for the same money. Upon further inspection the 500 was really tough to open and he said it had been sitting on the floor in the corner for the last dozen years or so. The next logical step was to ask him how much for both and he replied $300. That was music to my ears so we were both happy with the deal. I don’t know what it is about me and Wilton’s lately but these are two time capsules from the 8/93 and 4/95 era that are in beautiful condition.

Wow, and I thought mine was nice, that's a beauty!

I stripped mine down, and I'm very happy with what I've found. Just deciding on whether to put it in the bead blast cabinet in which case I'll remove the nut too, otherwise the nut will be undisturbed.
I did have to use a screw extractor on one jaw screw from each side where the philips head had been munged by clamping on something.

Anyone know how long the swivel handle should be - need to make one.

Thanks! and no, it was red under the rust and dirt. $20 at the Winchester peddlers mall.
Nice I've gone to the Winchester one a few times but never saw a pipe vise there. The Richmond location I tend to stop in about 2-3x a year just to peruse. There might be a light-blue pipe vise toward the center of the Richmond store. It's been about 2 months since I stopped in there.

Good find!

Kenc184 swivel handle for the RI 577 is 1/2” X 4 13/16”. It is threaded for 5/16-18 with a flathead screw on each end.

The Richmond store has the occasional deal. Found some Proto combos and one older Snap On combo wrench there around Thanksgiving for a buck each.

Anybody know a 1940's vintage vise maker with the initials C. M. & T. Co.? I will post some photos shortly. Searches not turning up anything, but initials are difficult search terms to begin with.

M and T in the name could also stand for “Machine and Tool” which would be a standard designation in some manufacturers names.

Thanks. I was trolling the "C" section of several lists with that in mind, because it often gets skipped in reference.

Here are some photos. The "41-V-98" is a Federal Stock Number from the mid 1930's to NLT 1953. The green paint, like the green paint on my Grand 41-V-104, looks Interwar/Pre-War to me, but it could be WWII. No model number. Nothing else but "C.M. & T. Co.". Nothing on the other side.

bhydro,
Thanks! That doesn't sound original to the vise though? At least I've never seen a handle that wasn't swaged or something. Never seen one with screw ends. Could you post a picture?

I think it could be, pictures are always best when wanting information. I restored a Rock Island 544B which is a 577 with pipe jaws and the swivel handles on this one was a three piece, basically like a vise handle, the small knobs were peened in place. The length is not that important just make it long enough to be comfortable and remember the body has a counterbore that the handle knobs fits into so it will not hit the Static body when rotating. I added a drawing of how Parker does theirs.

KMScott: thanks! Learn something every day. Hopefully bhydro will post a picture. Glad I just reinstalled my lever collet closer on my lathe. Makes life easier on little jobs like this - at least for a week end warrior machinist like myself.

At least 90% of the pictures of 577s I've seen have this handle missing. Any ideas why?

They used screws to hold the ends of the bar on which in use often breaks I’m guessing.

I have seen vise makers peen the handle knobs lightly so they rotate, why I do not know, eventually they fall off. Reed does this, maybe RI but I have not seen any 577's. If you have a lathe then you should have no problem making the swivel handle. Swivel handles are about the easiest part to make for a vise. Be sure to post pic's of your vise with the new lock down handle.

The Prentiss 802

Oh! I temporarily gave up on it a while ago. I'll eventually find an "802" scan and when I do, I'll be sure to send you a copy.

Be careful, collecting those 2" machinist / jewelers vises can become addicting!

Yeah I hear what you’re saying. I’ve got a couple of Stanley sweethearts that are favorites of mine. The 802 fits in perfectly.

Smitty, is it an AD you're looking for or the post of the 802 by KMF?
I don’t know if you noticed that circle side Prentiss 19 that popped up on eBay last Friday. They were asking way too much so I made them an offer and they took it. The vise is in great shape and fills a hole in my collection. The 18 and 23 are the last pieces to the puzzle.

Dr. Scott, I don't think they left the factory loose. I think, when in use, and the handle is allowed to drop, the handle head smacks the main screw head and over time it begins to de-peen the knob off. Kinetic energy...
