Picked this up for $1.00 at a yard sale on my way home from work this afternoon. No markings that I could find but I thought it was a neat multi-bit tool.

So I found some info on the ratcheting driver!

It is a Wooden Handle Geo. E. Gay Ratcheting Screwdriver with the Reversing Button.

Three Letters on the oval: GAY (not mine; found this on line)

Different design handle, SAME plate and switch!

attachment.php

More (but unverified as yet) info:

This ratchet screwdriver, which Gay called his "double action," was made by Gay under his own name and also under the name of Gay & Parsons. It was made in 6 sizes, ranging from 4" - 12" blade size.

This was not the earliest patent for a ratchet screwdriver (which was 1854), but it certainly was the earliest which was widely sold.

This driver began appearing in tool catalogs in 1880 and Gay was in business until 1920.

Patent info: The patent, # 210942, was granted of Geo. E. Gay of Augusta, ME on Dec. 17, 1878 with one half of the rights assigned to his sometimes partner, John A. Parsons. More patent info .

Typical Markings: (on face plate) "GAY / PAT. DEC. 17, 1878" (or rear, stamped in the wood in oval) "GEO. E. GAY / AUGUSTA / ME.

A more recent patent is here: http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=644907&type=UT

Might well be my best garage/estate find ever. Didn’t see much of interest in the estate pre-sale photos posted online. But after deciding not to go, I looked at the images again this morning about 30 minutes after the sale started. That was when I SAW IT!

.....Mad dash across town with almost certainty that it would be gone when I arrived....

.....Frantic search to find the way into the garage through a maze of a house.....

.....Unbelievably, it was still there an hour after the sale began!

The best thing was the price. Been looking for one of these for a long, long time. Finally!

I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story. Can you spot IT in the first image?

Yep, Silverdeck You ****!

A lot of nice finds lately guys. I’ve been busy with work and haven’t been out looking.

LS, nice Bonney haul you had there.

Oak what a score on the S-K. I wonder about that Frankenstein ratchet. You say the p.o. could have worked there. If it was produced for sale, then there can’t be many out there. The knurled version being super common, but that, I don’t recall ever seeing. Sweet find.

I went out today, all that I picked up was a few sockets, a Stanley 1299 and a few paper targets. I will put pics up with whatever I haul later this weekend. Mainly trying to rein in the spending right now.

Yet another You **** for SilverDeck, and a great story to go with it. I'm sure we'll all be scrutinizing sale pics of tool tables a little more closely after reading your story!

Outlaw: cool early ratcheting screwdriver.

LesserSon: congrats on your daughter's graduation. Sounds like she's ready to be a full-fledged self-supporting citizen--well done to you and Mrs. LS!

No sales for me this weekend, unless an "on the way" pops up. I'm in a Wilderness First Aid course most of today and tomorrow put on by the BSA.

Happy hunting, all!

Came across this a little bit ago and thought I'd share. Yes I know some will cringe watching parts of it as I did. Reason that I'm sharing is because I came across one locally a while back and it is what started my vise hobby. It also led me here as well. Interestingly enough I happened across the hand drill as well locally. Traded something I had $16 into. All in all $56 later, 2 tools found completely across town and now I'm hooked on vises haha. It is a great vise and I actually use it quite often.

This one takes the cake for me. As some of you know I am an avid Plomb collector. I had the opportunity to buy a Plomb collection. Some of you may have seen some pics over on the vinatge thread but I know not everyone heads over that way so here is a cross post.
5 yes 5 Plomb tool boards including a dual marked. 1 screwdriver, 1 DOE, 1 1/2" drive, 1 Adjustable and Pipe Wrenches, and 1 Pliers.
As slew of Plomb that was on the boards including some large pipe wrenches, my first hammer, 2 punch and chisel sets in the orginal letherettes, a set of DOEs, Tappets, and ign wrenches. The pics say it all.IMG_20190517_183349223.jpegIMG_20190517_183548620.jpegIMG_20190517_183602187.jpegIMG_20190517_183608116.jpegIMG_20190517_183619684.jpegIMG_20190517_183626052.jpeg

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

Sadly, attending involved driving past the Quakertown flea market (twice!) and multitudinous neighborhood yard sales WITHOUT STOPPING.
That's just torture. But congrats! :)

I have seen those before and, like an idiot, thought it was some kind of file holder! Very cool.

Nice find, Outlaw. I am jealous. I have a little old and oddball ratcheting/spiraling driver collection going. You should add that to the ratcheting/spiraling driver thread.

Field Report from Nescopeck:
Disappointing. In desperation, I’ve bought a bent Stanley sweetheart 10” Stillson and a painted-over 1/4dr box with a Thorsen 77M rat, a 1958 Snap-on hingehandle (frozen, looks like it took a bath in salt), and a couple sockets. The box has red crinkle and an oval decal under the black...
I actually handled a C’man vanadium underline 3/4” combo I need, but the guy had it in a box of misc tools for $60 AND WOULD NOT SELL IT SEPARATE.:headscrat
On the lighter side...

No, LOL. Just tossing a pebble into the pond to see the ripples.
Well, I was sort of right about this one. PS don’t try to clean these with baby wipes. Takes the print off the vinyl sticker.
To make up for a mostly wasted morning, we decided to head south again on a couple errands, this time stopping in at Quakertown flea. I was very restrained in my purchasing. Our favorite vendor had a C Parker 249X out on his tables. Not broken that I could see, and a reasonable price, I thought, though outside my daily limit. It is missing the lock down lever.

Most of the sales rained out this weekend, but made it to a few.

First yard sale: Plano tackle box, military first aid box filled with new first aid supplies, Roberts utility knife and a Topman flush cut saw for $15.

Habitat ReStore had almost no tools this week, but picked up 4 Stanley latches, a General plane and chisel sharpening guide and a Lufkin catalog for $15.52.

Last stop was multiple estate sales lumped together with plenty of Chinesium, but made a few finds for $17. Indestro, Ford and long C Craftsman wrenches, 2 sheep shears and a grass clipper, keyhole saw, pocket screwdriver, Stanley snips, large Williams Phillips screwdriver, 3 Plomb 1/2" drive sockets and speed wrench, Craftsman nut driver, older SK socket and a plastic tote box.

Last item is an International Harvester battery charger from eBay to go with the IHC torque wrench, battery pliers and extension I found about a month ago.

I have seen those before and, like an idiot, thought it was some kind of file holder! Very cool.

That was actually my first thought when I saw it, but when I picked it up I heard the bits rattling inside the handle. :) A quick examination and I figured out how the back end of the handle unscrewed.

It does have a nice shape that would be good for a file holder; I have some scraps of walnut laying around, I may put one of them in the lathe and try copying it.

Found a wood box under bench that hadn’t even been opened, they didn’t even know what was inside, I love these sales!
Found a bunch of new wood handles, check out the “prop of Beth Steel” Lackawanna, NY. How long since that has been open?

A bucket of lead with two Palmer sinker molds. Funny story on this. I was carrying the bucket to the truck, the lady behind me carrying a bag of my stuff when I could feel my shorts working their way down. This happens to me when I miss the right hole on my belt and when carrying. Glad she had a sense of humor!

Nice haul, and I appreciate the tip! I think we cleaned them out. They were nice ladies, and the prices were great for the condition of everything. Found out through talking at the end that women were born in Buffalo too!

Neat to see the Bethlehem Steel hammer handles. Lackawanna was near me.

I think your hammer head is Hubbard Hardware.

That W&T wrench, I don’t know what they are but I got the other to the set if they are a set. Looks like you beat me to a couple Blackhawk pieces too. Too bad someone got the ratchets already.

Sorting the wrenches and sockets now, but here is the haul, and a pic of the misc tools.

Also, this Ammo can with a note. I need the military experts’ help on the can, not my area of expertise.

Edit: tools in last photo are Blue Point ball peen and body hammer, Maydole and fairmount heads, Pexto divider, Diamond snips, 4 Vise Grips, Snap On hook spanner, Nathan Mfg Co hook spanner, Plomb pipe wrench, Trimo mokey wrench, Blue Point screw starter, Snap On brass and steel punches, Cal Van brass punch, Williams screwdriver and clutch driver, Snap On cutters, Channellock plier, Schollhorn nippers, Mac and 2 Proto brake spoons.

Hit 3 sales today, only one score. There was an anvil that looked interesting at one, but it had been bought by the time I got there .. the buyer was still there, piling up more stuff! It was smaller than it looked, maybe only 40-50 lbs, and I doubt I'd have paid the $120 they were asking anyway ... yeah, sour grapes.
The next produced this batch of sockets, about 80% Craftsman, with some Penens, a few old S-K's, Thorsen, Husky, etc. 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4" drives, metric and inch, standard and deep, but no ratchets. Not pictured are the culls, about 5lbs of no-name junk and some broken pieces. There were also 4 Penncrafts, all of which I already had. Got it all for $20, and as a bonus, the tote tray fits a toolbox I have that's missing its tray! What are the chances?

I could see that the original paint was black crinkle, so they may have belonged to the same tool box, but there was no such box there.

The whole batch was a greasy, nasty mess, so before taking the pix, I sprayed it with Engine Brite, hosed it all down out on the driveway, and on a sunny, breezy day it all dried completely as I was sorting it.

The wrenches from today. Just about every old US brand.

Some Westline, Auto-Kit, Proto, Williams, Vlchek, Barcalo, Blackhawk, Herbrand, and others. Bought them as a package deal. The good, the bad, the ugly, the abused abominations too LOL.

Socket day for you too I see, Bob.

Neat set of Apollo glasses, EC.

This was also a package deal. Most well used and some abused. The price was cheap though, so couldn’t complain.

Mostly old USA. Wizard sockets and speeder, some Williams, some Husky, Westline, Cornwell speeder, some Blackhawk, Craftsman deeps, mixed 3/4 drive, craftsman hand driver, etc..

Ignition wrenches. Some Wizard and Duro.

I rescued the S-K box, Walden twisted extension, mystery clip and oter things from their scrap buckets piles.

Anyone know what the clip is? Looks close to 22 maybe.

Man you guy in the sunshine stage are killing it!

Rain chased most sales away, one "block Sale" (3 houses...)was where my meager finds came from: I think I spent 5-6 bucks, and most of it was for SWMBO (who wasn't with me) Not a single tool! I left the one that I had selected ( a neat Swedish level) that they simply wanted too much for..

Sterling silver and Turquoise Sterling silver and Garnet for the set, Silver pate on the Napkin rings, two bells, I'll add some black to the Orange one for SWMBO's fave BB team

The only real interesting find was the Arrow Stapler. patents were dated 1939, so war years or just after? the top business part when released drops off the base for use on cork bulletin boards!

Damn! The hauls you guys are bringing in are nuts.
My work trip schedule changed last minute so I'm in Leeds for the weekend. Gives me the option of carbooting tomorrow if I wake up.

On a more serious note, my pop worked for Bethlehem Steel, and one of my favorite trout fishing rivers of my youth was the Lackawanna, which we called the Lackie. Also, I think I can identify the maker of those tool and file holders with the tight wire wraps, cb. Gotta dust off the cobwebs and do a little digging.

Best. Find. Of. The. Day... is in the upper left hand corner of pic 7, post #2910. Can't believe 3bay didn't mention it. Can't believe nobody else spotted it.

Ha ha. One usually sees that figure a bit larger as a boot jack.

I spotted it, but got distracted before I could post, so he who snoozes loses!

Oops, nobody was supposed to see her! :lol_hitti She was rescued from the scrap bucket. I should have saved the extra long socket rail too, the old school kind that went in the top tool chest. It had no clips but I wasn’t thinking straight.

I have some scraps of walnut laying around, I may put one of them in the lathe and try copying it.
How about cocobolo wood? Have any scraps of that laying around? :)

Look what I just happened upon when paging through an 1886 Bonney Vise & Tool catalog for a different purpose just now!
