I was actually looking at one of those last weekend, but I couldn't think of anything to put in the pick section. Cheaper though...
Punches, drill bits, taps ...........
Pencils, scribes, o-ring picks.
Nice, Looks to be in decent shape too!
:shocking: Am I the only one who clicked on the ebay link and looked at the other chest in the picture, completing missing the Gerstner!!!!???? :)

I picked up this antique display case this morning.

I spotted it out on the curb (bulk pick-up day tomorrow) when I was walking my dog and I went back to get it later. It came out of a famous old barbershop in town. Those are all fancy frosted cut-glass panels on the bottom, one missing, but otherwise it's in very good condition. Access via sliding doors in the back.

Some fancy trim work on it.

I am planning to clean the glass and the wood and leave it as is.

I am going to use it to store and display my entire 1920's socket set collection. Those are all in wooden boxes. I will stack them up in the cabinet below and rotate a few of them at a time, lids open, in the top. This is the first major piece of furniture I have found in a few years. I am going to put it in the Lugzsonian for now, but eventually, this display case and the jeweler's desk some of you may remember, linked here, are going to go into a spare bedroom (only one of five kids still at home...) that we are in the process of refinishing. When we have guests it will be a "Guest" bedroom, but most of the time it will be a little office/den for me.

Thank you, sir! I just finished cleaning it up and I am pleased as punch.

I didn't even notice that the top section of the sliding doors in the back had mirrors in the inside panels.

That brown gunk on the floral etched glass (a common culprit - nicotine build-up) came right out with Simple Green and Brillo pad.

attachment.php

I used GoJo and then Orange Glo on the wood. There's not much that can be done about the beveled-edge glass top, which has a hundred years of scratches on it.

At non-oblique angles, you can still see through it.

^^^Lugz, absolutely beautiful case. I love that glass!!

I've wanted one of these for a very looong time. Either they're missing parts/drawers, half rotten or expensive. I thought I might be able to find one at a garage/estate sale but no such luck.

I finally found this one that's complete and in great shape. Unfortunately I had to dig pretty deep but SWMBO said go for it.

It's about 3' high X 2' O.D. with 80 drawers and turns on a ball bearing pedestal. Each drawer has a peg in it's upper rail to stop the drawer from coming out all the way and spilling the contents.

Dave, congratulations that is in outstanding condition. Like you I've wanted one for a long time but I've never seen one in the wild. How does the drawer being pulled out not ride on the lower drawer. The ones you have pulled doesn't show wear marks. What joints did they use in making the drawer. Again a great find.

Every drawer is supported on it's own shelf.

Here's what the joints look like. It looks like small nails on the sides and drawer bottom secure the drawer fronts. They may also be glued.

Each drawer is pretty small. I'm guessing they held screws and small hardware vs bolts.

Great finds guys! This lil box came to me by way of my girlfriend. We were at an estate sale and this was in the garage, all dirty and filled with junk. She saw it first and thought it was cool for her rock collection. Immediately thought what an excellent valet that would make!!! My brain started contemplating different ideas on how to obtain this awesome box from my girls possession. Finally a couple weeks later a harbor freight wooden machinist box popped up on FB and I scooped it up for $50 like new. It worked out well, she got a larger wooden machinist box for her tools and rock/gem collection and I got the bad *** estate sale box. As i was cleaning and waxing it, I saw the date stamp inside then upon closer inspection of the Simanco lock mechanism, I realized this was an antique sewing machine cabinet accessory box from a 1930's Singer sewing machine. Being an upholsterer, this box fits me perfectly!!

Great score and refurbish!
Thanks, Jock!

Agreed. Now if only I could find a few more of these and several barristers and I'd be set! (Collectibles comprise about 99.9% of the tools I own.) :)

Thanks, Dave. Those octagonal American Bolt & Screw cases are awesome.

Thanks for the additional photos Dave. The shelf makes sense , I couldn't see it in the first pictures. IF I can get my skill level up I'd like to make one.

I think making one of these things would be a fun (and challenging) winter project!!

That's a nice box, and how appropriate for your trade!
I have a similar Singer sewing machine in a cabinet, it's all complete and now in storage. My Grandmother bought it new and cherished it for the rest of her life but for some reason nobody seems to want to use it it now! It has a bank of storage drawers down one side full of buttons and rolls of thread and spares for the machine and the original receipt tucked away in there somewhere.

That's an amazing cabinet for storing small items, what a work of art! Never seen anything like it before.

Picked this up a year or so ago. Likely built from a Popular Mechanics plan.
I put a coat of urethane on it, new brass accents and handle. And red felt!

It's up for sale now. Brian

Thanks RedVise; love the RED lining!
It's not that I don't like the usual green lining, but something about red felt and a nice warm wood color...

Well have several of these, this is a three-column in my home office. They originally came in two, three and four columns. I have a couple four columns in my shop, great for holding whatever you want, hardware, nuts & bolts, etc. Each drawer will hold about 500 sheets 8-1/2 by 11. History of these is that they were made for the Patent and Trademark Office to hold examiner search files, and these would date anywhere from maybe 1880s to 1930s. I know this, because i worked there for 35 yrs.......

ED: interesting wood cabinet to say the least. just curious if the indentations for finger pulls works ok or do you wish they had a handle on each drawer/bin when you get them loaded and heavy?

thanks for the history too!!

They were never designed for much weight, just paper, but even full of nuts and bolts, they slide easy enough. I would never modify to add handles.

There sure are some great wooden chest and cabinets that have been posted. Thanks folks for posting them.

Got a question, what is the purpose of the mirror in the machinist chest?

It's for herbal medicine. Have seen things like this in shops in Chinatown.
