I hear ya on the crowds. Isn’t it great to have that a/c in the shop? I have it in the garage still. I spend about $10 a month running it. I use 76 degrees and Econ mode. Works awesome. Just need more space.

Rattle Snake, took me awhile to get through this thread. I enjoyed every minute of it! Now it looks like I have two or three other ones of yours to enjoy next!

Added a simple rail on my workbench to hang cordless tools on like my old workbench. On this one I had them in the top drawer to keep them out of sight, but I use them enough to justify the new home. Might try moving the clip over to the other side.

Incredible build and love all of the DIY and personal touches. I am laughing at all of your OCD requirements but it all really turned out great. Top notch fit and finish on things.

Thanks Qwik,
Sometimes I look at my creations and wonder, why, why must I complicate things so much? I guess OCD can have it's benefits when things come together nicely. I too get a laugh sometimes thinking back at the trials and tribulations endured to get to the custom end product.

It seems my warped mind must be challenged and engaged within a narrow acceptance window. Too many projects/stress and I get burned out, not enough and I feel unaccomplished. I also realize if this is all I have to worry about, life is good!

Definitely a model example for fellow GJ'ers. Cool color scheme and making use of scrap pieces for not only decoration but function. I just want my garage to be organized but I keep thinking how I will be in my home for at least another 10 years what a difference finishing the interior and putting in a/c would make to it. I am a penny pincher unfortunately.

I'm an engineer as well and I am picky and document the hell out of vehicle maintenance but that does not translate to my garage space. This place does help keep me motivated at least. Keep up the good work!

Re: rattle_snake’s 34x40 in AZ - Speed Metal Garage

So I have spent off and on prob a few hours scrolling through this build, wow man!! The attention to detail is mind blowing. I built my 30x40 from the ground up and I know how much thought needs to be put into everything. Countless nights spent thinking, drawing, talking to myself. I thought I was particular but Jesus, I’m jealous of your results but can’t imagine the time each project takes to get to your acceptability level. I’m very envious of how your projects turned out. Hopefully once the cold comes here that forces me to stay in the shop at nights and knock off the finishing touches that I’ve put off for too long. This is really inspiring man and I plan to take some of your ideas to finish mine.

Wow, thanks I'm flattered.
Glad my uh, attention to detail, has inspire you to finish your shop.

Yes lots of time thinking and debating with myself about unnecessary details. I had to learn a lot as this was my first large scale building/construction type project. I did eventually burn out and needed a break so building in phases worked out OK. More work but was able to understand usage and adjust accordingly.
You're more than welcome to steal as many ideas as you want.

Some quality shed time (QST), listening to heavy metal working on my BBF.

Working on some additional wiring on the lift. While I was there I figured I'd check the torque on the anchor bolts. They were almost all under torqued so snugged them up to 100 again. If you have a lift you may want to check yours.

Changed my mind 3 times on method to add more receptacles onto lift poles. Was originally going to do in conduit above lift in ceiling trough, even had almost everything to do it (you know you have hoarder tendencies when you 'just happen to have everything on hand').

I have 2 dedicated circuits, one single pole 20A and one double 30A for lift motor. I wanted to add another 4x 110v on right pole and a 30A 220v for welder on the left. Since ceiling is inaccessible at this time and I'm lazy, I chose not to run another dedicated 220v circuit as NEC would dictate.
Instead I just tapped into the existing lift pump wire and ran #10 SOOW under the base plate with the hydraulic line & cables (oh my, the net nanny's will poo their pants on this one).
:)

I skipped more 110v outlets for now. Could steal one leg from lift 220 since it is right there, but need to add neutral to conduit drop from junction box at ceiling. Other options are use the existing 110v circuit and run in conduit above, or run another cord under base plate (This is to code but non-ideal).

But for now I can run welder or plasma on 220v at lift or south bay where project truck is. Also bought a 25' 30A 6-50 extension cord that will get me to the overhead door and allow those machines to reach outside onto parking pad far enough to do whatever I need.

Justin- are you happy with the floor plate lift? Does the floor plate get in the way enough to be concerned with?

No, I would not get a floor plate lift. This lift belongs to a friend that has no place to put it, so it lives on my shop and I am happy to be able to use it.
The speed bump aspect ***** but better than no lift.
:)
I planned and built the shop for a 12'+ tall, 10k overhead style lift. Hopefully my friend can build his shop soon enough and I will buy the one I want. Not worth upgrading for just the base plate aspect, though.

Maybe I missed it. Why not go 514” stroker BBF while you into it? My 96 F150 is getting a 393 before we know it.

2 main reasons are cost and breakage/reliability.

A stroker will add about $3k driving total coast of just motor over 10k. Need aftermarket heads and all high end supporting parts. Trying not to build a super expensive vehicle that I will never get my money back out of. A big HP motor doesn't get much return on sale.

Once in the 600-700lbtf range things behind the motor start to fail. Would have needed to build the trans to a higher power level at 2x the cost. 1350 u-joint become questionable (1310 are stock). 1410 yolks are not cheap. Chromo axles, solid (no roller bearing) axle u-joints ($$$) and so on. Plan to use on the trail so want reliability in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

But since we are in the USA, I'd assume you meant 240V, not 220V? :headscrat :headscrat :headscrat :headscrat

When I was running one of my 50A circuits, I pulled a neutral and used #6. Have 3 drops. One for an RV and 2 for welders. Left neutral in the welding boxes "just in case"! All split bolt splice.

Highly improbable both RV AC units, microwave and welder will all be running at the same time. May even tie my 5HP compressor into the circuit as well. IF I ever desired to Arc Gouge, I'd be using my engine driven welder anyway.

Progress on Ford looking good!

Weekend project was air compressor hut v2.0.

Hello Justin,

It’s been a couple years since you put your compressor shack up. If not a blatant copy, I’m thinking of doing something very similar. How is your shack holding up and any thoughts on doing things differently? Not sure I want to leave the entire back open, trying to prevent it from becoming a critter habitat. Was thinking more along the line of vents up top and bottom, with wire mesh or some such, but concerned about adequate ventilation.

Thanks!

Hi Todd,

Blatant plagiarism is the best complement. The shack is doing well. I open it up and drain tank every month or so. Not really any critters calling it home. I don't specifically treat it for bugs.
The door alignment has held up well, which was the part I was concerned about, as the door is quite heavy. The diagonal bracing on the open rear wall was critical, as it doesn't have the sheer support from metal sheeting. The custom handle/latch mechanism is working well, glad I farted around with it as it gives some character.
I instrumented with temp sensor during summer for thermal evaluation, results were better than expected.https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6860411&postcount=501
That said fully enclosed with decent venting promoting convection cooling would probably be OK.

Only change would be to have bought longer lengths of steel, so all were one piece. Make sure to make it tall enough to not hit head on sharp roof metal, and leave room above pump to dissipate heat out to vent.

The non-iron-oxide pic bring me back to it's construction!

Started having issues with overhead door closing. Opener is a 8500. The cable would go slack right at beginning of closure. Assume it is combination of recent temperature drop and cable memory around drum. I slight tug would resolve, so I added some bumpers I bought back when I installed the 8500 (3 years ago or so). The door operated fine without so I never installed back then. The tracks are flat.
I was absolutely shocked that they fit. Rarely anything I install fits properly or works out of the box. Lot of variables in door installs, but got luck and just tightened some bolts. Didn't even adjust. Seems to have solved the issue.

Justin, that's the kind of fix I love. Bolt it on, done and dusted. I'm sure it's happened to me as well but it happens so rarely I can't remember what it was.

Added a grinding curtain to keep sparks off flammable boat cover. Used electrical conduit to hang. Modified some compression adapters for vertical drywall mount.

Doesn't block too much light. Will effect airflow of A/C, but if anything will keep cool air near welding table. Can obviously slide them over and bundle too.

Keeps sparks off truck parking too.

I like it!

Better than weld curtain frames. That are ALWAYS in the WAY when not in use!

Only 1 question. Why go outside the box? Could have used NPT floor flanges. We did that to make "Industrial" curtain rods for Ms NsulaCountry. Used EMT set screw connectors and right angle pull corners. Though your outside the box design was most probably cheaper.

A nice addition!
Until I win Lotto and can have 4 shops, clean parking for 10+, metal fab, wood working and general wrenching.

Ya, I used what I had for free. With my new belt grinder I just shoved the fitting in and the threads disappeared.

Is that a tarp or purpose made shield material?
They are purpose grind/weld curtains;

Spent an hour on this thread, so much good stuff. Weld curtain such a great idea, as opposed to covering everything up that I've always done

Thanks, it's a nice place to work in now that it is 'done' (if there is such a thing).
I saw a thread here where someone with a very small garage hung a curtain to protect a project car. Seemed like a better approach than a frame so I stole the idea and adapted to my application.
