Freud - that Wilton looks great!

Get- appreciate you sharing your technique. Looks fantastic!

Here’s the Wilton 600 I picked up. 1972 key stamp and turns like a dream. A lot of original paint and the original handle bumpers. Need to decide between Freud’s bare metal finish or some hammered verde green.

This crazy looking thing is actually a vise. bolt it down, have a stop setup (probably 2 so you have a corner) place the work piece and slide the shaft against it, and when you close the lever it pressure clamps into the work piece.

Those 600 Wilton’s are great vises, nice find. I’m not a big Verde Green fan so I’ll have to vote for a natural finish.

Get, how much time laps between applications?---Looks factory or better by the way

I let the trunk paint dry over night. The light blue was dry in a few hours and darker color about the same. The white spatter was dry in 30 minutes and ready to coat with satin clear.

I finally broke down and used the black metal oil that I bought a year ago. I couldn’t be happier with the results, now I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. This is the previously blue Yost that I’m upgrading.f2b5e2ba872e5f265b7aab5530869d02.jpg

I just picked up this vise today. I think it says Moore's Universal Pattern Vise on the side. The unusual feature on this vise is the bottom. It looks like it was meant to be mounted on a pipe.

Has anyone here ever seen one of these before?

Thank you all for the compliments.

Your score reminded me of a few Heinrich vises I have that I may never have posted.

This is my 8" drill press vise.

I think the drill press vise may be in need of a restore.

Thanks guys. Will see how it looks once the jaws come in.

Smitty- that black metal oil looks great. Will the vise be outside or in a humid environment? I ask because the metal oil doesn’t always prevent rust in those conditions.

Maui - that’s a very interesting vise. Haven’t seen one before. Nice find!

It is actually called a fixture lock designed to be used in a custom fixture setup. Used often on sliding bandsaws and repetitive drilling ops.

Maui, until some of our resident Historians come across with some old ADs, some old posters, or google history, which they will fortunately, I'm going to agree with you that the vise is supposed to be fastened to a pipe.---And the loop in the center would be the place that you would run a small chain or some kind of ratcheting devise through and around the pipe for a solid anchor.---Ratchet it down in any position on the pipe, upright, sideways, or up side down.---The pipe could be any length which could extend your work area to infinity and beyond.:D.---Nice find.

Well she is finished. Wire brush finish with clear gloss. Jaws and handles were sandblasted and shined up to give it a little contrast.

I even went to the trouble of wire brushing the bolts and washers holding it down to my bench.

Looks nice and a great deal!. FYI, you have the pipe jaws in upside down.

This oil actually smells a lot like BLO. The vise is going to be a shelf dweller so it will never see the great outdoors. I’m going to top coat it once it dries to seal it up.

PghJKB...You nailed it! I'd bet your right testicle on it. I scoured my database and the internet with no success, thanks for the information.

Maui...That's a really interesting vise, even with a few missing base pieces. I'm amazed that we continue to see vises never seen before.

So those base pieces could be fabricated, Possibly without too much difficulty, it the right sized pipe/tubing could be found easily. The bottom arcs shouldn't be difficult as the only part that would be "fixed" for radius would be the part mating to the vise itself? And that you would want to start with a turned solid disk piece anyway?

Not sure I'm quite following the lower left Fig, as it seems like its using a different mating piece?

Hmmm, No, its leaving a piece out and inverting another piece and converting to a simple swivel I think. So the universal could be fabbed up as above, but the inverting piece for the straight swivel would be a fully machined part or possibly two different pieces... Interesting.

This piece is used under the vise Outlaw. Limited movement but enough for Pattern Making. Maybe 20 degrees. Pretty interesting vise Maui. and great work PghJKB for digging up the Patent. Maybe 4" jaw width?

Mslund1,
What a lovely stand and vise.
Iron always looks so much more fitting than steel, under a vise.

Just picked up this York 100 yesterday. Appears to be in good shape for its age. Will start with a good clean up and then decide how far to go.

My newest addition is a Craftsman 5210 with 3 inch smooth jaws.
Friend and fellow GJ member d42Jeep grabbed it for me when he was at a sale yesterday.

Craftsman made by Rock Island isn’t it?

I just finished reworking the Yost 34C. The vise has 6” jaws and weighs in at 165 lbs. I’ve always felt that this vise could be more than a modern blue combo vise. I made a new handle and upgraded the swivel locks to 5/8 studs. After stripping the old blue paint off I wire wheeled the vise clean and cleaned up the pipe jaws. I finished the vise with Black metal oil and will top coat when it dries. It really has a vintage vise feel to it now.8a9191d467c9f13be0745007585370fa.jpg3815dd5f481c3ba6f301095b7a294ccf.jpgfbf365978a5b003eb292dc040a74f6da.jpg85c283535b5445922ab16934e04a35e2.jpg

I agree 100%...that’s a BIG improvement. I have it’s smaller brother, a 32C awaiting refinish. I was thinking light blue paint but that black oil looks fantastic.
Is that the same stuff that Kevin uses?

Looks great Smitty. When the casting is that clean, you can’t beat the metal oil.

Got the factory jaws for the Wilton 600 today. Big improvement. Also, forgot to show the Wilton copper jaw covers this vise came with.

Nice job on the Yost Smitty.

Being retired since Christmas let me restore several vises. I had to snap some quick pictures since they go quickly out here in Colorado. I list them on CL and then they are gone.

Like Smitty used I did the Reeds in the Black Oil from Sculpt Nouveau. The Reeds are a 404-1/2 Swivel Jaw. 4-1/2" jaws and built in 4-1919.

Reed 103-1/2 and a Reed 103 with 3-1/2" and 3" Custom made jaws. I replaced all 3 Reed's cast in jaws with custom made set's. I don't have pic:s up here of these two flat nose Reeds. they are in my shop computer.

Left the C2 bare and the new owner want's to use the Black Oil so I sent some home with him.

Great job on the Yost. I've passed on more than few of those modern blue combo vises over the last few years, primarily for the same reasons you chose to "upgrade" yours. I too really like the way that vise looks in its natural form now with just the metal oil. The new handle and swivel locks really complete the look! Awesome! The only other thing I find myself wondering is how does the 34C compare in size to your 4C?

Kevin

Goes without saying that I really enjoy all of your vise restorations. They are masterful! If only I could get a list of some of the vises you've got sitting in line so I could possibly stake a claim :) My collection is really lacking a Kevin Scott restoration!

Thanks guys. Chris, it’s funny you asked about the Reed, I actually took a picture. I’m thinking it would look so much better with a coat of the black oil.

KMS - incredible work, as always. And no one can apply that metal oil like you do, still dont know how you get it that dark. Great work!

The problem is you think the can is mixed up until you find out the heavy black oil is on the bottom of the can. I apply it with a brush and then take a soft rag and blot the finish, do not rub it. In a hour it is hard.

Chris, thanks for the kind words, Since before Christmas I have sold 3k worth of restored vises ( 6 of them) here along the front range of Colorado. Shipping sure drives the cost up. The new owners are all business owners, don't have very many collectors out here. No list made up, just trying to clear my benches.

Thanks guy's.
