Lugz,
Those drawers could never be used in my shop.
I can never find three square inches of clear bench space to set them on to open one! :lol_hitti

Isn't old stuff so much better than anything new. Amazing find, I'm Jealous.
Thanks. And that's the truth.

I hear you. The chest itself is fairly compact: 10" high x 10" wide by 13" deep. And the drawers are only 1-1/2" high except the bigger one which is 2". But with the lid flipped open, they're 26" long!

I don't plan to use this, obviously. When it's not in the Lugzsonian, it will be part of a WWII Living History display. Once I get it back to "original." There are two or three well-known upholstery guys in the Military Vehicle community drooling for it - and if not the whole thing, at least the fasteners. They fix original stuff (canvas tops, tent halves, straps, tied-downs, uniforms, etc) and make reproductions. But I won't separate the fasteners from the chest, and I am not ready to get rid of the kit.

Shame you found all that rust, but it does look much better without the 'kermit green'! I suppose the original paint is fairly thin.
Watching with interest to see the restoration process and results on this one, it's with the right person to do it.

Thanks, J.! I already sanded down the blight on the chest. Going to hit the drawer faces tomorrow morning. Maybe get a base coat on tomorrow afternoon, techniques on Monday.

I refinished the cabinet shell, the drawer faces only, and only the very front part of the lids a few days ago. I managed to snap some photos in a slight overcast morning light a few hours ago, which was good (not much glare).

I didn't touch the interior of any of the drawers. As is my way/preference, I left the original finish (wear marks and all...) on the exterior sides of the drawers and drawer lids. As you can imagine, I was a little anxious about where the re-painted parts would meet the original aged finish. I am thrilled with the results. It is almost impossible to see a difference and even then you have to really try, really be looking for it. Here are a bunch of shots at a few different angles.

Here's a shot that is the ultimate self-test, in my opinion. The chest, drawers out, some closed, some open, etc, exposing original finish and repainted finish together in the same view. Again, I am thrilled. It all matches up very well. I may not even add wear and tear to the refinished surfaces (around the pulls and corners for example), as I am wont to do with some refinished boxes.

Saving the best for last, the best, coolest and also funny (haha and ironic) part of this update is that I had intended to use my own favorite paint formula. Rustoleum Camo followed by a homemade "stain" (Italian Olive or Eden Green and Black cut with thinner), because you just can't find an off the shelf Camo paint that has the right amount of yellow and green. They are all always just too dark, which comes from a tad too much blue.

But I discovered that Home Depot (or my store, perhaps) no longer carries the Rustoleum camo paints!

Enter Don (d42jeep) and his recently refinished Plomb midget box.

I was familiar with TM9 Products. Everyone in the MVPA/MV hobby is. They make a wide variety of well-respected paint products aimed at WWII vehicle preservation. But I didn't know they made rattle cans. As I told Don in a text, I think they are doing themselves a disservice by marketing this particular product as "Signal Corps Type I." They may have aimed the formula at that particular shade, but it is perfect for any wartime toolbox. It is a classic early to mid war OD green. And I will never buy any other paint again. It has a wide nozzle, goes on really smooth, and dried fast. (EDIT: As Don has already pointed out on the Plomb thread, it is also semi-gloss. The big store camo paints were extremely flat.) It is expensive ($12/can) relative to HD $3.99/can, but beyond well worth it.

Source was Midwest Military. If you're looking to refinish something, just Google Midwest Military Paint, click, and scroll. You can't miss it.

For sale....make me an offer. The Box itself weighs a lot so if shipping, it could get ugly$$. Whatever it costs to ship, thats what I will charge. I'm in the Charlotte NC metro area if anyone is close and wanted to pick up.

If you just what the fasteners and the press, I can get those in a USPS box and just ship those to you and I'll keep the box. Either way. [email protected]

Scrolling through this and wondering if there is an instruction manual anywhere that details how to assemble the various fasteners.?

I would call that likely with original issue. None came with mine and I have not looked for one. The only fasteners I've used (or plan to use) were four grommets, to hang a couple vintage military toolkit inspection layouts, actual size silhouette style, as dust curtains on my workbenches, and that was simple. I have seen instructions on line when I was googling some of the part numbers.

Thanks, mine is pretty much in as issued condition but no instructions. It did have newspaper packing dated Dec44.The small grommet that I wanted to mount was pretty easy. The insert and anvil were in a different drawer and once I found them it was ready
