I know this... But I also think it's my responsibility to make an effort...

Plus, I think I owe it to the user base that supports this joint to let them know why changes are happening and that they aren't done just for shits and giggles.
That's how you avoid alienating your users!

Unlike many other sites that just completely tossed everything out, didn't explain why and made no effort to retain even the slightest bit of familiarity!

I am not saying to not explain the changes and why. That is important, no question. I guess I have a different take on how far I would go with that, but to each his own.

One of my favorite things about this forum vs others I visit is the way the “new posts” works.
It shows new since my last visit, but also leaves “older” new posts (those unread by me) still marked as new.

Most other forums just show new since last visit, and everything else is marked as read.

I hope this doesn’t change.

[I fully realize I may be an idiot and this is a setting somewhere in other forums, but I’ve never found it ... this is the only one that behaves this way for me.]

I use the website occasionally instead of the app. Some of my other forums are thru Xenforo too. I do have one question not that important but it’s a question are we going to have a “like” feature like the other forums have? I always like that feature one of the forums even has things like haha and angry and all of that so I think it would be cool to have but if not then that’s fine. I like that feature so you don’t have to reply back to recognize you have acknowledged the person if someone quotes you or something.

Thanks for your efforts on our behalf. I'm sure we'll all hate it for the first week or so, and then it'll be business as usual for all but the really mudgie curmudgeons.
Good luck with the upgrade. Would you like to borrow my chicken, knife n beads?

Hell, I just figured out how to post pictures tonight... (Thanks, LxCam).

Thanks for all you do, Ryan. This is the only forum that I actively look forward to reading every day. I'm hoping the rollout goes well, for all of us- especially you.

Before you pull the plug, think about offering some GJ "Legacy" swag- t-shirts, hats, etc. It will be a hot commodity. You could probably cover your development costs!

My car websites have gone in that direction & I hate it. The previous versions were much better.

I'm a car guy. As far as I'm concerned "Summit" had the greatest website for searching and funneling your search to find exactly what you were looking for ever designed. They thought they had to "improve it" yeah, right. Nowhere near as easy or intuitive as it used to be.

Have you had users just complaining endlessly about how bad the current layout is? If not - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

When talking Summit most likely what you hate is what they had to change to make it mobile friendly. The company I worked for a few years ago was the same way. The website was great on a desktop or laptop but went wonky on a mobile device and we were watching the trends of usership and had to change our interface.

The only things I would like to see is easier pictures, the ability to embed YouTube videos and the ability to thumbs up a post. Sometimes you agree wholeheartedly with someone and just don't want to quote to say "Yeah!"

If you don't do any of that stuff I want my money back. :headscrat

Wish you well on the upgrade. People will adapt.

Having been in IT development & management for 35+ years, I've been through my share of upgrades. Yes, there will be pain, but that will pass.

Hang in there and thanks for all you do.

I'll muddle around for a week or two on the platform, figuring out the changes. Then one day, I'll think "I don't remember how the old forum worked... or looked."

Will it be just a "like" feature or also downvoting? I'm not a fan of the "collective bullying" that seems to result from the upvote/downvote thing, Reddit being the best example where "popular" and factually incorrect information gets upvoted while correct popular information gets downvoted to oblivion.

Like button. I don’t do dislike buttons - figuring if you dislike something, you can just keep your stupid face closed. :)

old people hate change lol (as a 51 y/o in IT I can say that)

Guess what guys, you can't keep running windows 98 and netscape forever. Things stop working and doing weird things. VB is win98. Once you get past some initial changes xenforo actually works reasonably well.

In my experience on other sites, the feature that makes the thread title a link to last unread instead of 1st post is worth it alone to me. I find in VB the little new post arrow that should do that often skips to the actual last post, not last unread. Uploading pics works better too.

Biggest confusion will be the high level 'new posts' works differently, and finding your own threads. Easily overcome if you actually try.

Oh, and conversations replaces PMs, but its really quite similar once you get past the language. And the "new" flag on new posts that hides text. That ***** lol.

Let it rock.

I did this same move about 6 or 7 years ago on jalopyjournal.com. The first 4 weeks or so were miserable. Ughhh... Once folks settled in though, it went really well...

I remember that. Some folks were so bent out of shape that they came over here to complain about it!

While I agree with this, I am probably guilty the bad part more than I would like to admit. Dale Carnegie has the three Cs that you don't do, criticize, condemn, and complain. Trying to do that is actually harder than expected unless you just say nothing.

On another note, eight more posts and Ryan breaks 3k.............

I'm looking forward to it. The CNC forum I frequent uses the newer style and I find it works really well for me.

I get it. I pride myself in hardly ever talking **** to anyone on the internet... But there have been times that I've lost it...

For the most part though, I think about how men should handle themselves and just move on.

Would James Bond get in an argument on the internet? How about Johnny Cash or John Wayne or ______ (insert man's man here).

If you really think about it, getting into an argument on the internet says a lot about the people participating.

Have I missed seeing a date for when the crossover is going to happen?

I'm aiming for next week, but realizing something will probably go wrong between now and then... Four or five people have to have perfect schedules.

I'm looking forward to it. The CNC forum I frequent uses the newer style and I find it works really well for me.

I cherish guys that know what's coming and can't wait.

Ryan - thank you. I really get a lot out of a few of your forums. I live in a tiny town and this has become how I socialize my interests and projects. I really appreciate the forums.

Even people that don't like change are more adaptable than they think. I can think of lots of programs I use or have used and every update, I hate it for a couple of days, then wouldn't go back....windows, Solidworks, CAD, Excel, etc. Like when I got a new phone a couple of months ago after having the same one for 6 years....was a pain for a few days and now I like the new one so much better.

I hope everyone will commit to giving it a few days to sink in before whining and moaning. This is my favorite site on the whole web and I think the upgrades will be nice. Thanks for running a great forum.

The only thing you can be sure of in this life is change. Do what you must Ryan.

I just hope all the URL links I have imbedded into my build thread referring back to a Reply or Thread in the GJ website (like in my sig line) aren't going to change. I have them everywhere! If they do, I can foresee my family getting ignored for days, weeks even, as I make updates! LOL Does anyone know yet?

Thanks for your efforts in keeping this website alive.

Thank you for all your hard work on this and your other sites. I’m sure there will be plenty of bitchinf with the rollout but I know you’re doing this for us.

Will the new setup have a “go to first unread post” like HAMB? Super useful to me

My hero, Mike Vallely would reach through the screen and beat you senseless, I don't think he would type anything bad though......
