Started My 30 X 40 Gambrel Garage Build

I too have been lurking and learning from everyone for several weeks I broke ground on my 30 X 40 gambrel garage build last week hauling in over 280 tons of 3/4" gravel to bring the elevation of the slab up above street level. I will be adding photo's as the project progresses.

Great pics, this is exactly the size and style I'm looking at building this spring with the exception of it being a two door garage with the doors on the end. It's the only way it will work on my property.

Wow, love the design. How tall are the ceilings inside - 12'? How about the garage doors?

steveyb, Wow. Great build. Gambrel's are one of my favorite barn shapes. Tons of extra space over garage for what ever.
Your drive/fence is beautiful to, do you do the gardening?
This is going to be NICE!

This is the exact size and type of garage I want to build attached to my soon-to-be-built home. (except same as gumpy66, I'll put two doors on the 30-ft end). So! Watching this with great interest. Nice work so far and good luck with the rest!

Just out of curiosity, and I know it's going to be different in Tenn. than it is Ohio, because that wouldn't fly up here, but do you not have to pour your edges thicker or what keeps the gravel from working out from the slab?

If that were in Ohio, one or two winters would crack the hell out of the slab and gravel would be working out.

Don't get me wrong, it looks great and I wish I could do something like that here, but we get frost heave depending on the winters. And when we really get frost heave bad is when we have a winter that is warm, cold, warm, cold, and it will drive the frost right on down. I have a sidewalk from the garage to the house and totally forgot to pin it to the slab portion at the side of the garage. Most winters (except last winter) it will let the sidewalk raise 1- 1 1/2" in difference. In the summer, the sidewalk is flush.

BTW...Looking forward to more pics. That's one great looking building. I kick myself everytime someone shows an upstairs or talks about getting a lift. I built my garage in '99. If I knew this place existed (Garage Journal) my garage sure wouldn't be what it is today. I only have 8' ceilings and hate them.

I am interested in hearing about this as well... hopefully some of our resident concrete experts will join in. Around here, stick builds on slabs are always poured with thickened edges with a bunch of rebar in it... I assume it's not only for frost, but it acts as a solid "grade beam" type of footer to support the structure since there is not a typical foundation footing.

BTW... build is looking great! I am looking at a similar size/layout if I can get a variance. I have 8 acres on this parcel, but my barn (40x100) takes up nearly 100% of my allowable square footage.

Great looking garage!! I'm going to be starting mine this summer/fall. What are the dimensions of your space in the trusses? Mine will be 30x40 as well, but with a 16x8 door on the end and 6' roof/lean too on the entire length of one side.

Thanks for the journey in your building process. I am going to steal the design and get it out for bids in the next month. Any other info you can provide I will use.
