Looks like this right now:

Those art deco Stanley vises are super cool. I rebuilt one for my son a couple of years ago.

Here is my Parker 974. The vise was $.20 a pound with only 1 jaw insert and a real sloppy movement. Some shimming took the slop out of the handle. Some great machining by Farold Hoover in Kansas filled in the jaw insert requirements. With the jaw inserts the cost of the vise is way over $.20 a pound but I have new jaws so what the heck? Somebody will get a heck of a deal at my estate sale. I hope it's not autopts....

ZRX - those Stanley vises with the logo in the slide are always on the high side when I see them on Ebay. That one looks great so keep posting photos when it's done.

I think that the last one that I was watching went for around $45 at close. You got me started buying Pennypencher vises by Columbian but I may hold off on the Stanleys. Everyone gets a Pennypencher vise in their Christmas stocking this year....except my wife and she gets something non vise related. autopts gets a lump of Wilton coal.

Here are a couple vises I've picked up recently.
Columbian 504 and a Wilton 09-600. The Columbian came in a large pile of tools I purchased. It's in usable condition, but definitely shows signs of heavy use.
The Wilton came from an auction. It's my first "bullet" :)
This thing is a monster! 6" jaws.It is in pretty decent condition. Has some welding spatter and the number 35 welded on it. The spatter will clean off easily. The swivel base has a broken mounting foot. Anyone have a swivel base for sale or trade?
The Wilton has the number 101203 on it. Is that a date stamp? If so, what does it signify?
Enjoy the pics.

somebody here did an amazing repair job on a broken mounting foot. Machined a new one out of steel, then cleaned out the remains of the busted one, squared everything off, drilled and tapped a hole (or two) into the base to mount the new foot, painted, and it looked like new.

I bought a Columbian 504 this past weekend at a garage sale for a song. I need to fix a stripped out jaw pad hole, other than that it will work just great on a new welding table I am building.

I hope to blast it/hot tank it, squirt some paint on it and try to abuse it for a few more decades

This is my first large vise. Columbian, 4 1/2", weighs about 60 lbs. Made in USA. Not sure what model it is, I see a plate with 20 and 12, not sure what is between those numbers. The spelling on Columbian has a small "u" not the same size as the other letters. Has 2 swivel locks. It could be fitted with pipe jaws, but does not have them installed.

Anyone know what model this one is?

Update: Looks a lot like this one: 204-1/2M3 COMBINATION PIPE VISE

Edit: Mine is a 204-1/2M2, not M3

Rezarf - very nice find at a great price! Columbians are like Chevy's and Fords....they aren't real flashy but they do a great job at a great price. They just work like they should without any fanfare like Parker....Prentiss.... I actually have more Columbians of all sorts of sizes than any other brand.

bw77 - that one is a very nice find also! you have to love that tall shape of a combo vise with its short slide. that one is a later model Columbian as you have sussed out with the straight logo on both sides....it will outlast us all.

It must be Fall and the Columbians are dropping out of the trees! I just bought a nice stationary old double curved logo 4" stationary vise. I think it will go to a friend of mine who helped design the Vise Bouquet. Now to just find the time to strip it and freshen it. Where does the time go?

Columbian stationary are 500 series, swivel are 600 series, and combos like yours are 200 series. Yours is a 204 1/2. Note! Everything I said is on a guess! Dimencia setting in!!

Just got this together tonight. It belonged to my late father. It was a rusty heap when I got it a few days ago. I scrubbed most of the rust off and shot some rattle can Krylon on it. Couldn't get the jaws loose (screws rusted up good, afraid to strip the heads), so I just wire brushed the overspray off them and gave 'em a wipe with an oily rag. Screw wouldn't pull the jaws open, so I found an E-clip that'd fit, and shimmed the slop out of it with a stainless washer ground open to fit around the shaft.

Also, I wanted to be able to clamp it onto a workbench rather than permanently bolt it down... so I cut from scrap an 8"x12" double layer of 3/4" MDF and bolted the vise to that.

3 1/2"
Made in U.S.A.

No. 03 1/2
Columbian
Cleveland, O.

That would be me Brad. But it's really quite easy and anybody can do it. In the last pic, which foot is the new one? Bill

I bought a Woden No. 1 bench vice at the Barrie Automotive Flea Market the weekend before last. I have several Record vices and Wodens are basically the same thing. The vendor was asking $10 for and I was happy to pick it up at that price. It has 3" jaws and weighs 10 lbs.

Here's what it looked like when I got it. It worked well and the jaws were in good shape. The handle was a bit bent. It was pretty rust free and the paint was good except for some patches of white that had been spilled on it.

Vice-DSC_0572.jpg

It cleaned up well in my air powered varsol dip tank. I left it in for an hour at about 90 lbs psi while I cut the grass. I later dropped it in my rust removal tank for another hour.

Vice-DSC_0575.jpg

It painted up well and with some lubricant it works great. I manage to straighten out the handle using my shop press.

Here it is next to the largest one I have, a Record No. 8.

Vice-DSC_0571.jpg

... and with some other Record vices. From left to right Nos. 1, 3, 4, 8 and 6 (mounted to my bench).

I also picked up an unused Record No. 52 wood vice this week for $50.

You have a lot of great looking vises from the same manufacturer. That has to be some kind of record!

I'll be here all week, thank you, thank you.

^^^ Records are the only type I've used for the last 40 yrs or so and I've always been happy with them. "Go with what you know" I guess.

I've been using a Mastercraft (Canadian Tire) for about that long and it's been OK.
Hey PCO6, you brought me back some good old memories. On a trip to Toronto back in 1994 I picked up a 4-inch Mastercraft from Canadian Tire on sale for 10 dollars Canadian, which was then like $6 American. I just couldn't resist that price. The shape and color (colour?) say, it's a wannabe Record, and most likely Taiwanese. It says "imported" but no country of origin on the box.

You can see from the picture that mine is still in great shape for a 17-year old vise ;)

EDIT: I typed the product # on CT's website and this vise is still in stock. Much more expensive this time.

Better late than never...

Here is my 7" Craftsman Machinist Vice w/ swivel base. A buddy in my car club past away couple years back and two of us in the club bought some of his tools when his wife was ready. He was a mechanic for Chrysler since the sixties and i bought most of his snap-on, s-k, proto etc. Went back to visit her few weeks ago and never noticed this vice at the end of his old bench...most likely cause it was barely identifiable and COVERED in crud. She asked $20 for it...gave $30. Disassembled, cleaned, painted...just a minor resto on it. Great vice. Wish i would've taken a before pic:(

Gary - I laughed a bit when I read your post. I planned to go to Canadian Tire today during my lunch hour so I took a cell phone picture of the current version of the Mastercraft 4" vice. I think the one you have is better, especially at that price. I knew before I got there that the BOX has not changed since when you bought yours! I can't believe they have been using the same graphics all this time.

A few other things about the box. Our U.S. and other friends probably aren't use to seeing French on something like this. The other side of your box is no doubt in English. No offence to our French Canadian GJ friends but we get it on ALL packaging, instruction sheets, etc. A common joke is, when pouring paint from the can at least you know what side to pour toward. I also find it odd that "vise" is spelled with an "s" and not a "c". That's normal in the U.S. but not the British Commonwealth.

I think you are also right about the connection to "Record". I think they contracted with a lot of other companies and yours has some definite similarities.

Stew

Thanks. I used Valspar blue in a rattle can that I bought at Lowe's. Tremclad also has a good blue but I think it is a bit lighter. Here is another post that talks about paint for Record vices. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80347&highlight=Record+vice

Post #12 includes a picture of a Record No. 4 that I bought new in the 70's. I sprayed part of the front of it with Valspar blue. I think the colour match is pretty good. The pictures of my No. 1 above appear a bit lighter but I think that's because of the camera flash.

Hi Stew, since you made the effort of going to the store to take a picture, I took picture of the English side of my old box for comparison. The graphics on the box changed over the years but only slightly. The fact that this vise is still sold and still guaranteed forever says, it can't be too bad.

Here is your picture again of present-day box

Dude... you know you better never let your wife see that you have the complete set of vises... you'll end up with every complete set of knick knacks and collectible plates, Barbies, or commemorative doo-dads she's ever thought about getting, and you'll have nothing to say about it.

That's hilarious. Even though Canadian Tire decided to offer a new vice it seems they were happy with the box! Thanks for posting the "17 year comparison" Gary.

Brad - I think I'm safe. My wife doesn't show any interest in what I do in my garage. I can't remember the last time she was even in it. She will come to the door to talk with me but that's about it. She doesn't even look around. She's probably up to something too but that's OK. I don't need to know. :)

Was that originally read? or was it hammer tone?

7" opening, or width of jaws? (can't be width of jaws... :shocking:)

Bill - That is a fantastic repair on that vise base from 2 pages back! If I could do work like that I could sleep at night knowing I was a craftsman. The closest thing I get to that is buying a Craftsman tool from Sears.

Rhodes - very tasty vise you freshened up! You have to love the older Sears vises. They are generally perfect for home shop use and will outlast us all.

It seems that Prentiss vises have been falling out of the trees like leaves lately. In the past month I have grabbed:
Prentiss 265 - 5" swivel base (done)
Prentiss 264 - 4" swivel base (just arrived today)
Prentiss 514 - 4" stationary (painted...almost done)
Prentiss 52 - 4 1/8" stationary (shipped out today)

And the Prentiss 22 - 6" swivel jaw (don't ask.....long term at the machine shop)

I am retiring in 2 more months so I guess that I am piling up some things to keep me busy over the winter. As long as autopts never takes inventory in his basement, I am golden on vises!

Craig - congratulations on your impending retirement!

Now, stop buying up all the Prenti out there...you can't have a monopoly on them!

That being said, please find the time to continue posting your efforts on GJ. Some of us need to live vicariously through others...

Let's see the #265!

I know the Magic guys well. I convoy down for their annual show in a group of about 12-15. They bring a pretty big group up to our show as well. Happen to know Leroy Daniels?
