Gonna get a compressor.
Gave up without even trying to get the discontinued model i posted about a few days/week ago...
Now its the Inger Rand SS5L5, I can find it locally for 1099. Which doesnt sound bad to me. They would have to order it in so it'll be a bit of a wait. But thats not such a big deal.
Cheapest i could find in the states was Northern tool at 879, But then there is exchange, fuel to pick it up. and duty on the non North american parts on the unit... if they even wanted to charge me for that.
Anyways. As it stands thats the plan.
I read a few posts on here with peopel with the IR brand. And alot of reviews that say good things (and some bad of course).

I guess the point of this post is..
That sound like a decent price? Anything i should watch out for? maybe something that caught you buy surprise when you made the purchase?

I don't know the models or pricing of air comps but that is probably a pretty respectable unit. If it makes 15 cfm or better will do what most people can dream up for it.

I bought a SS5L5 from Tractor Supply several years ago, and its been a great compressor. Somehow, I got one with a 80 gallon tank; now they're all only 60 gallons. For the home hobbyist, like me, its a little too big, but I got it on sale, and no more than I use it, it should last a lifetime. Just make sure to pick up some synthetic oil, as my compressor came empty.

I just got my SS5L5 from tractor supply about a month or so ago for $849.00. It is still that price.

So far I really like it. it puts out 18.1 CFM at 90 PSI. It keeps up with my Dee Blast 34 bead blast cabinet no problem. The noise level is around 90 DB which isn't too loud for me.

Here is a video of it running.

I planned to get the IR two stage 5HP but it only put out around 15 CFM.

I would highly recommend a TWO stage compressor, the noise is much more tolerable.

Like the IR 2340L5-V

Contemplated the 2 stage for a bit. But when weighing out the pros and cons, i remembered that the compressor will be in a separate room then they work area. So really its not going to be that bad anyways.

Thanks for all the good words guys.
Time to order it up and play the waiting game.

well.
Finally put the order in today.
Its 3 weeks out because they have to order it from the states.
But i guess that gives me time to come up with the cash. lol.
I actually found it on sale locally. so that was a nice savings of around 300 bucks..
more then pays for the materials to run the required power line and a breaker.
Actually thought today that maybe i can use a wire that was run for the baseboard heat that is no longer in use anymore.

dont forget that just to get the basics running, you'll need a regulator (doesn't come with one) and associated fittings there, 1/2 ball valve, and you'll *want* to reroute the pita drain. The drain is 1/4 female, the single outlet for air is 1/2 male, then your air fitting. I was surprised a bit out these odds and ends added up! And you'll want separator at minimum too.

x2 on this unit and I also bought it from TSC, was about $840 at the time, little more then 18 months or so.

Would buy again, have had zero issues and lots of run time. Keep the tank drained, and you must have filters, as this compressor does spit some oil.. Not enough to be a concern, and not enough to worry about between servicing, but add some moisture in the air and I get a nice blast of emulsified oil crud every time I drain the tank. Too cheap for an auto drain, so it gets drained manually twice per day after start up and a full tank, and after use.

After seeing th posts about the drain it will definatly be rerouted.. lol. and this post made me remember that its time to service the air dryer and filters i have setup from th old compressor. lol. Thanks.

I guess with that little bit of oil you can be sure its coated the inside of the tank a touch.. so no rust.. maybe? lol.
Thanks for the notice.

Here's mine, just got it fired up this morning! Mine was used, i picked it up excellent visual condition wise with a bad motor for 100 bucks..one of those emerson ones it seems people have had problems with, the guy had moved it from their printing shop and a few other items were missing...it seemed pretty new and clean.

The price everyone is quoting doesn't seem bad to me from my experience pricing parts for this thing! I could have easily had as much into it as a new one almost.

5hp motors aint cheap! I found a new baldor quincy model number shipped to me for 150, had to buy a pulley from surplus center (got a bushing 2 piece setup) and drill a couple of holes. I figure i have 300-350 in it when all is said and done. But if i had bought motor from normal place it would have been several hundred bucks, a IR pulley they wanted 60 bucks and the belt guard and so on...

I was going to just get the Husky, kobalt, etc ones but decided to go this route when I saw it come up for about the same cost and extra cfm just in case.

Ran it for a few minutes this morning, man what a difference over my porter cable oiled 4 gallon compressor noise wise, and night and day difference over the oilless 25 gallon i've been bumming. seems to pump up fast, before i turned around I was at 60.

Not going to run it until I get a belt guard or fabricate one.

^ nicely done. Where did you find a 5hp baldor for $150, and do they have any more?

Unfortunately i can't seem to find it =(

I got it from a seller off ebay that seems to list a lot of motors there, and from what i recall they had a decent website...of course ebay so no warranty. Unfortunately i just checked, this has been sitting in my garage for 8 months waiting for me to put it together, and paypal, ebay history has purged and i cleaned out my inbox a few weeks ago...i can't seem to find the seller. I'll check more in depth this evening and see if i can locate it.

It was a strange listing, the part number had no information on baldors site, but the motor specs were all good for this compressor. googling the part number gave me a quincy compressor part number, so i just took a chance, I assume it was one of those things where the manufacturers get their own spec'd part number. Odd thing I remember at the time is it had been relisted as it hadn't sold at $150! I picked it up on relist for 125+ 25 shipping. But i assume maybe there was some confusion over the part number or maybe there's not a big ebay demand for motors who knows...

Anyways it arrived like new and well packed! wood platform for the motor in the box, shrinkwrapped and all ....and fired up nice this morning.

very cool man.
But for me it all changed today. lol.
while at lunch i got a call that a 60 gal 5 horse eagle was for sale. apparently does 18.5cfm at 100.
Came with a couple hoses, breaker, and some wiring. 400 bucks..
I just couldnt pass it up. Herd it run. and it sounded strong.. and quiet. touch of oil came out when i opened the tank drain, but the water that accompanied it was clean.
feel pretty good about it.
I pick it up tomorrow. And i'll post some pics when i get it home.
