Shopnut, check out this site:

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/downloads/motorcyclesounds.htm

The first selection is pretty impressive (2008 Triumph Street Triple 675 with Triumph Arrow Exhaust).

The instructions there on that page say to right click on 'LISTEN' and do a 'save as...'. I just have the 'save link as...' on Windows7 right click; this works just fine. I saved the file to my desktop to make retrieval easier when it came time to browse the sound files in the how-to procedure I listed. Good luck with the VAUD and happy listening!

Omphaloskeptic - I got the sound saving thing figured out. I needed to do a "Save As" at the hyperlink text and not once the .wav is playing in Win Media Player, and that took care of it.

Thanks for the link to the cycle sounds. I have read out the Honda CBX since like 1979, but that is the first time I have actually heard one - cool! My Yamaha RZ350 sounds nearly the same as the RD350LC they have listed. Again, many thanks - I can have some fun with that.

flybefree - Thanks. The video is uploaded and will be available in the next post!

VIDEOS, VIDEOS, VIDEOS …

Videos should help explain some aspects of the Asylum and now I'm all set up to start uploading them.

Let's start with this short one (the only one loaded so far) to demonstrate the TV operation. Sorry - it's kind of small so I'll have to see if there are some settings to remedy that:

Video - New ASYLUM Shop TV System (now with sound!) (in actual speed)

You have to wait about 10 seconds for something to happen because the camera was across the room from where the temporary control box was located, and I'm not exactly in a condition to be running yet.

Enjoy. There are more on the way.

Shopnut,

That is way cool. Good to hear the slow down for your recovery worked out and that you are back in action impressing us all.

Wow! See if you would not have injured yourself....you would NOT have had all this extra time in your head to think of this TV Shop System. Well Done! Glad your up and about.

Wow. You gotta throw some Space Odyssey 2001 in there like Jack. That would MAKE that video:)

Kudos to you...that is so awesome. I showed my wife. She said 'wow' too:D

Jack Olsen - So I guess the video is playing for you then :) (Or were you talking about my wonderful wiring crimps in the earlier post :))

nkachur - I might have actually impressed myself on this one - with the fact that it actually worked! I like the new Avatar, btw – it really reminds me of your great accomplishment.

Postsedan - Thanks. Years ago, I had planned on having some type of powered door, but the powered TV extension out of its hole was definitely a result of my downtime with the foot injury. I’m just glad the right deals came along on fee-bay to make it possible.

BTW, it seems like we have something in common, a special attachment to our first cars, the beloved Chevelles. In my case, it’s a 1970 owned since 1982, bought from a little old lady with 78K on the clock for $200. I’ll probably be one of those crazy guys getting buried in it. :)

JCQuick - Thanks for commenting both here and the other Computer thread. Glad you like it.

Wingnut65 - Thanks. Everyone that knows personally me has me pegged for a gadget freak. I’m just glad I’m able to incorporate a few of them into the Asylum. Speaking of “bars”, I need to go celebrate now.

Red Leader - Glad you and your wife liked it (its hard to impress the ladies with garage stuff). The S.O.-2001 theme would seem pretty fitting (and now I have the .wav file), but I seem to recall that Jack used it for his car lift intro, so I might have to search a little bit for something else fitting. I did find out Windows Movie Maker is supposed to make editing these video clips easy for sounds and such so it is time to learn a new software again.

BTW, those “rusty old tools” of yours get transformed into wonderful masterpieces! Good on you to preserve that bit of machine history.

tinbender66 – Applause? I guess you understood then what amount of effort went into it :). Topping this one will be that front loft (at least to me from an accomplishment standpoint) – it’s like my Everest, my last big frontier. I’m thinking I will take another run at in it May.

Omphaloskepic - Thanks. That’s a lot of beer toasting there in your post – but I’m up for the challenge!

Hypothetical question – If someone didn’t use the S.O. 2001 music theme, what would be another good tune to go with a video similar to mine?

schwalby – Glad you like it. The whole TV contraption probably wasn’t necessary, but I’m already having a great time showing it off, both here on GJ and to others. And I think it will be beneficial in the future – no one can steal the TV if I hide the control panel :) ((j/k)

I actually joined and spent a whole night reading this thread, so this is my cherry post. I love gadgets too so the use of them in the ASYLUM is awesome! You had me at the windows and now the TV! I loved the aluminum tile board so much I was going to use some in my shop but Lowes didn't have it or pull up the item #, nor did Home Depot. Where would I follow in your footsteps and obtain some of that pretty stuff?

WOW...Just simply unbelievable!!! I thought the remote operated windows was over the top....The TV is quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen (in a shop anyway!!). Excellent job sir....glad you're getting around enough to keep working that magic!

Great video, but now I know your true name is Bruce Wayne, I expect you respond to a Bat spotlight in the night sky, and the ASYLUM is really the bat cave.

Well, I'm glad you're not a Garage Journal virgin anymore! I'm not a huge poster on this forum, but this place is more fun if you participate some and get to know your fellow members a bit. Of course, its a goldmine for information either way so use it however you wish.

I have finding any mfr info for the tileboard on my "to do" list for you. Lowes was clearancing it about 5 years ago when I stocked up on enough to finish off the Asylum. I recall someone reporting shortly after that they weren't able to find any in their local store anymore. I believe there is a label containing a website on the back of the sheets so I will get that for you when I have a chance and let you know. After 6 years, the tileboard has turned out to be a great choice for me.

Anyways, welcome to The ASYLUM! You realize there is no turning back now, right? :) Thanks for checking in.

This thread should be mandatory reading for those wanting to join Garage Journal. It's definately an epic thread and a fantastic example of how to make a giant thread useful for those just seeing it for the first time.

SpeedinLemon - Thanks. Things just fell into place and it seemed like the right thing to do - it was one of those "vision" things I guess, but sometimes my visions don't turn into reality for years. :)

I'm glad I have some good memories with the shop sign and TV to look back on, instead of the surgery and all that ****.

That reminds me, I need to hang that ASYLUM sign don't I?

Omphaloskeptic - I REALLY REALLY like that Mission (not so) Impossible tune. With the right timing, it could be absolutely perfect. The Victory At Sea one is epic, for sure, but not nearly as recognizable to the masses. There's one more in my head, but I can't recall where it is from. I knew you would come through with a winner, that's why I asked!

R1chy - you are confusing me with forum member Amazzen - he has the Batmobile! :) The guys at work keep pestering me about adding a trap door somewhere, like a rotating bookcase or something, that leads to an under-lake cave. There's plenty of room for expansion there!

StevenBiars - Thanks for your comments. I strive to make this thread as useable as possible to all forum members. You would be surprised at how much I actually use it myself for looking back at historical data about the build. I believe it was worth the effort from that aspect alone.

Your post was a good reminder for me to update the Index on page one - I've been a bit laxed lately.

SOME ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE TV SYSTEM ELECTRICS…

Here are some of the limit switches that sense bracket and door positions. The second picture shows the wiring inside - the black "hot" wire jumps from NC to NO contacts. The white and green wires energize the appropriate motor.

1215-Shop-TV-327.JPG 1216-Shop-TV-328.JPG 1217-Shop-TV-337.JPG

Next is the wall control box. The hardware store didn't have a 2-gang blanking plate so I settled for the old style switch plate. Two $.69 switches provide nothing more than a means of mounting the black plate to the white wall box. I cut off the little flip toggles that would turn a light on and off and applied some black decal material to cover them up (and so people weren't flipping the "dead" switches wondering when something is going to happen). Labels for the functional blue 3-position momentary ON-OFF-ON switch will be added later.

1218-Shop-TV-362.JPG 1219-Shop-TV-367.JPG

Here is a shot of the junction box mounted just to the right of the TV bracket. I will tidy up all wiring later.

MAKING MY OWN CUSTOM LENGTH STEEL CABLES…

I bought this cable crimping tool years ago and it gets used every few months or so. It's great to be able to make your own custom length cables. This time I needed a small cable to kick the TV to the left as it extended out from its recess. Here's the tool, the 1/8" cable and ferrules before crimping, and the 1/2" ratchet used to swage it.

1221-Shop-TV-368.JPG

Here's a shot in action. I find it best to take about 1/4 turn on each bolt to avoid putting too much strain on either one. I keep them greased well too. You tighten the bolts until the jaws touch each other.

1222-Shop-TV-369.JPG

And the finished crimp. Note how much the ferrule has been distorted from the original shape. It was crimped down in two spots.

1223-Shop-TV-371.JPG

Here's the finished cable with a bolt through the eyelet ready to install. I have yet to have one let loose and I've probably made 50 crimps ranging in size from 1/8 to 1/4" cable (knock on wood).

1224-Shop-TV-373.JPG

These next two shots show the new cable installed on the left side of the bracket, with one showing the cable slack in the bracket retracted position and the other with the cable taunt in the extended position.

1225-Shop-TV-379.JPG 1226-Shop-TV-376.JPG

GETTING THE TV TO RETRACT EQUALLY IN THE RECESS…

I had to do a little fiddling in order to get the TV to retract back in the hole without some side tilt. I came up with these large screws as an adjustable stop on each side. If the TV was tilted to either side, even a few degrees, the door couldn't close. In the picture, they have some foam taped on, but will get a proper rubber bumper when I find one.

1227-Shop-TV-386.JPG

AND LASTLY, A LINK TO THE VIDEO WITH SOME SOUND ADDED...

I used Windows Live Movie Maker to add sound to the video clip. There's suppose to be a way to speed up or slow down the video which would have let me sync up the events better, but you will have to settle for this until I figure it out. (Thanks goes out to Omphaloskeptic for the audio clip)

Video - New ASYLUM Shop TV System (now with sound!)

Enjoy!

:D

Seems like you have plenty of time on your hands. How about coming down to the 1950s Craftsman Garage and installing one of those? Only since we are going with a 1950s theme, I want it to be vintage correct so this can out of my wall:

Philco-TV-123-hd.jpg

All joking aside, you've really raised the bar.

Dang it!:)

Red Leader - The very first thing that came to mind when I saw that vintage TV picture was Brodie's saying from the original Jaws movie, but with a twist - "We're gonna need a bigger crane!" You might also need a whole extra room adjacent to your garage if you want that monster flush with the wall when stored :)

You're too funny!

Omphaloskeptic - My normally friendly computer, HAL, hasn't spoken to me in DAYS! And everytime we exchange glances, he gives me that evil (red) eye. Scary!

(BTW, you are welcome - credit where credit is due)

Wingnut65 - Just goes to show ya anything is possible with a little thought and elbow grease put into it. (Well, sometimes maybe A LOT of each ;)) Thanks.

Hey ShopNut great job! Where did you get the cable crimper and Ferrules?

I bought the cable swage tool at Home Depot in the late 1990's when I needed to make a long 1/4" cable to help persuade some tree fall directions when I was playing lumberjack. I'm pretty sure I paid around $60 for it back then.

I still buy the various size ferrules at Lowes to this date. I bet Home Depot still has them as well. Look in the chain/cable area in the hardware section - they probably have the tool there too. If not, I'm sure places like aircraftspruce.com carry them for online ordering.

Now that is seriously slick! Nice work. Talk about a conversation piece when the gang is over. I'd be afraid I'd never get to watch the game because someone would always want to see how it works "just one more time!" But this is so cool, who cares about the game?

Thanks GGB. I'm just hoping those "intermittent duty" hospital bed motors make it through the initial testing and novelty stage :).

The bracket motor gets a little warm after about five quick cycles (still can hold hand on it), but I don't expect that to happen too often unless I'm really showin' off. Even though it is smaller, the door motor has very little load on it and doesn't heat up at all.

Crazy stuff.....I love it.

How about a homemade crimping tool for hydraulic hoses (or A/C hoses)? Its a pain to go to the city every time a hose breaks on the farm.

No rush, I'm sure you've got a hundred crazy projects in the hopper...;)

All the best....

Give it time Amazzen, he will have one set up with hydraulics to crimp and pneumatics to flip the hose to crimp the other end!

I have the same crimping tool I inherited from my Dad. Haven't needed to use it yet, but will. I think he got it at Aircraft Spruce.

BTW, the door and frame work awesome, but, does the TV actually work????

Amazzen - Thanks. Is that Zamboni a hose popper? :)

Those steel fittings on the high pressure hydraulic lines take some serious force to crimp on. The machines I've seen use hydraulic power to do it. I bet you can find a used machine to make your own custom hoses at home and some aren't very big at all.

100 projects? - don't we all? ;)

Wingnut65 - Flattering, but don't expect to see any hose makers anytime soon.

Does TV work? WHO CARES! :) - Actually, Mrs. Shopnut asked the same question after she saw the video and I scratched my head with a puzzled look and had to answer (EDIT) "I don't know". Honestly I ran out of time to even plug it in. I'm crossing my fingers I didn't damage it when I was "tuning" things in - it slammed into position several times before I got the limit switches adjusted perfectly.

TV DOOR LIMIT SWITCHES…

Here is a picture showing the complete door drive system. You have seen the motor and driveshaft before, but now the limit switches are also installed.

1228-Shop-TV-390.JPG 1229-Shop-TV-384.JPG 1230-Shop-TV-383.JPG

The limit switches are tripped by a small piece of 3/4" angle attached to the lower slat of the roll-up door. I ended up having to position the TV plumb on the bracket (no down tilt) to give more room for this aluminum angle to bypass the front face of the TV. I have not turned on the TV yet since it's been up (as Wingnut65 asked), but I hope the picture looks fine from down on the ground - remember, the center of the the TV is at about 8' from the floor.

1231-Shop-TV-381.JPG

IT'S STARTING TO LOOK MORE COMPLETE…

If you've watched the video of the TV in operation, you have already seen the tileboard trimmed out and mounted back in place around the TV. I ran out of time to cut the black trim or paint the door yellow, but it really is getting close. The power system is working great and I captured a number of other videos, including one inside the enclosure which I found particularly fascinating, and I will get those posted soon.

1232-Shop-TV-393.JPG 1233-Shop-TV-400.JPG

I'm debating whether to add some panels inside to hide the mess back there. Whatever it is, it will need to be easily removed for servicing.

A VIDEO OF THE TV SYSTEM INNER WORKINGS…

I set the camera inside the cabinet with a light shining up on the TV mechanism. You see the back of TV on the right. This was filmed before I had the stops adjusted evenly side-to-side so you will see TV slam fairly hard when it parks back inside cabinet.

Events to watch for at given times:
0:03 - Door starts opening. You can see limit switch arm move at bottom middle of screen.
0:11 - Door is fully opened. Bracket motor kicks in.
0:20 - Cable in middle of screen taunt and TV starts kicking to side.
0:23 - TV at full out position.
0:25 - I push button to start retracting TV
0:36 - TV fully in. Door starts closing. Look for door motor wobbling in background.
0:44 - Door fully down. Limit switch trips at bottom middle of screen.

Video - ASYLUM Shop TV Inner Workings

Enjoy!

He'll have that coming out of another compartment in the wall:D

Shopnut I thought it was kinda funny that the tv didn't work...and that type of irony reminds me of several familiar projects of my own:lol:
