Hit up 2 sales today. Of course, the first one had zero tools, but I struck paydirt at the second!
IMG_0563.jpg

2 adjustable wrenches, one an 8" crescent and the other a 6" LA-CO Lakeside Forge Co, Erie PA. Never seen that brand before.
2 pairs of pliers, small pair is Fairmount (Cleveland!!) and the big pair is Utica.
2 hammers
Ridgid 14" pipe wrench, taken apart for cleaning
2 Ilco rim cylinders
For a grand total of 11 bucks! They gave half price for everything marked!
The 2 adjustable wrenches did not open, I took them totally apart and cleaned a lot of gunk out! May put them in the parts cleaner at work Monday also. The smaller one is in bad shape, the wheel has several busted spots on it but it does open and close.

What is that smaller hammer?

I picked one up at a flea a bit back. Use it for pin nailing mostly.

Not sure what it's for! I made a post for our resident hammer expert, outlawms to review!
PS the guy pricing the tools didn't have a clue! There were a lot of other tools like squares, levels, 2 or 3 bit braces, but nothing else I desired.

Nice haul Jeff! Only things in garage sales around my parts are housewares and old Chinese tools it seems. :(

least you get garage sales >_> not done over here, they do 'car boot' (trunk) sales instead which aren't the same. rarely much interesting stuff at them, usualy clothes toys housewares and stuff  occasional some broken/worn out tools.

then again to many thieves etc here, if someone held one they would be eying up your property to do it over later... (yeah im a cynical person)

Damn I'm jealous! I used to have that set of SK screwdrivers. I think I originally got them from harbor freight or sears for like $7 or something (this was a few years ago). I used them all the time at work for interior bits and things like that, but eventually they all got lost or stolen or whatever. I've looked around to try and find another set but I haven't been able to locate another set.

Nice Jeff. What keyway are the cylinders?
I also have one of those small hammers on our pinning bench. Used to have a claw but both parts chipped off.

Nice scores Jeff!

I had one Estate sale and a block sale claiming 20 participants scheduled for today's run, but that was all due to the weather (Light rain strong winds) I expected the yard sales to fizzle, but surprisingly they didn't, even with the rain. (OK a couple dropped, but all the others moved into their garage and continued) Sadly only the Estate sale had anything good. But it REALLY made up for it!

I started with a small power hack saw, He wanted $20 and I offered $15, and he accepted! Hack saw is a 12" Excel Hack Saw Mfg by Covel, who was later bought by Clausing, or Atlas bought them and Clausing bought/merged with Atlas... Apparently this was also made for Craftsman all the way into the 70s? :dunno: (I'll check later...)

I know Covel was advertising the saw in Pop. Mech in 1948..

I dug through several tubs of tools and this is what I came out with:
Any Angle Crescent Wrench
Bergman 6" adjustable Crescent
Carll reversible adjustable,
Drafting compass set
hatchet head
BP hammer head
Small tinners hammer head
Craftsman chain wrench
Ford auto wrench
square wrench
lineman's pliers
light pliers made of sheet metal
Niipper multitool
4 soldering coppers
Yankee style push drill (Germany)
brass bound Stanley boxwood folding rule
Small hand saw

Asked him how much for the pile and he thumbed through about 1/2 (Mumbling $1, $2, $3...) and said with the saw $25! I asked what about the craftsman 1/2 HP motor with a 4 step pulley (Marked $20), and he brought it up to a total of $35! :rocker:

Pics of most of the tools:

Better pic of the old adjustables; 2 have Pat. dates of 1916 and 1918. The 6" more conventional Crescent is cool as it has the square hole in the handle maybe for an early plumbers acetylene tank? :dunno:

And the old Ford wrench (this will become my 2nd best example for condition minimal rust and most of the paint is still there...) and the odd "Square" wrench, the box end actually has 2 different sizes of square in it stepped...

Motoys, no keys with either but an IN33 fits the locks.
Outlaw, I collect locks and Motoys is a locksmith, by pinning bench he just means the area where they do all their rekeying. :)

When I got married my ex ask me if I wanted to go to some garage sells. I was always looking for log chains. Iwas looking in the wrong place. I have plenty now. Even got a lathe at one.

Most of the "tools" I find at local garage sales (and in CL ads for that matter) are worn out power tools that they want too much money for even if I did have an interest in buying them, or a small pile of cheap Asian made junk. Every once in a while I'll find a good sale, but it may take several weekends worth of hunting to find someone who has some decent hand tools. I think most of the good stuff ends up on eBay these days.

My wife is form Australia. They have boot sales there. There are a few swap meets but there is nothing good. I have been to Scotland. It is bautiful. The sad thing is that the US has more junk sitting in sheds, basments and mini storage units than the rest of the world has. I am forever sending machinist tools to my brother inlaw in Australia.
Here in Southern California we have yard sales 24/7 all year around. If I hurry I can get to 3 swap meets. I have several dozen good ones within an hours drive. The tools are endless. I get tired of going some weekends. I never buy a good deal. I only buy when I can get it for the price of shipping or for what the tax would be and I still come home with a box every week.
All my sons and grandsons have full toolboxes I gave them. The most I have ever paid for a good US 1 1/2" combo wrench is $6. Only once. Wrenches from 15/16" to 1 1/2" cost me $2 to $5. Average is under $4. That is for all brands. Industrial or chrome. I will pay a lot more for a full set but not by the piece. I never pay more tha $5 for a 3/4" inch US made socket. I got my proto 3/4" wratchet for $15 and it was like new. After 50 years of collecting, buying and selling everthing form scrap metal to fine art I have learned not to pay the good price. Sooner or later you will end up getting it for a song. Yes fine art. I have a masters in art but would rather deal with tools. That is how I made my nest egg. Not to be a snob but I would not give $5 for the tools that started this post. If you need them that is different. You need to buy good tools when you find them no matter the used price if you need them. I am the king of cheap. I owned an antique mall for years along with several goo second hand high end furiture stores. There is an endless supply of good things to resell. One needs to know the chainging market. It is nevr the same and never the same form place to place in this counrty. Happy hunging. It is never too cold to stop for a good yard sale. I drive the wife nuts.

That makes sense. I've re-keyed a fair number of locks (I'm fairly well set up for Schlage and Kwikset) , but never thought about having a bench for the work...

Well for me it's just my workbench with a LAB pinning mat and my tools and pin kits :p
I also have a lock holder/stand that one of the lock forum guys made:

The two plastic trays are great for organizing pins!

If you can dedicate some time on a weekend to get up early to beat everybody else to a sale, you will find some good stuff.

Garage sales aren't always the place to find the goods. You might have to shell out a bit more and go the estate sale route. Ask Outlaw, he will tell you the same. They command a higher price but at least you have a shot at anything in the garage, not what some family is deciding to cast away.

I've been to hundreds of estate sales and have hauled out buckets, boxes and bags of great tools for under 50 bucks. Lots of the estate companies focus on the interior items and not the garage.

There is no way in hell that they are going to dig through every drawer and price every tool. Make a pile and ask the nearest woman employee, they are excellent at pricing tools:lol_hitti

If you PM me your location, i can tell you if there are any good sales coming up soon.

In my experience estate sales have better selection, but generally higher prices (still a lot less than new, though!).

Garage sales are a **** shoot, but the prices can be dirt cheap.

Really interesting stuff there, Outlaw! I try to hit a few estate and garage sales every weekend. If you don't get to the estate sales early enough to sign up, you end up waiting and picking through the leftovers (which aren't always so bad).
I got a late start today and missed the most promising estate sale because I wasn't willing to wait in line when there were other sales. It ended up being one of those days when I got home discouraged, but felt better after going through everything. The good stuff:
Park hand tool box with just the right patina to preserve
1 Herbrand USA socket
2 Early (Indian head?) Blackhawk sockets
1 Walden-Worcester ratcheting Model T band adjusting wrench
About 10 USA-made pliers (got 6 at one stop for $0.25 each!)
Set of Dunlap open-end wrenches in their holder
Dunlap ratcheting ("Yankee"?) screwdriver
Flourescent trouble light on a cord reel
Shallow metal pans and a silverware organizer for project and toolbox organization

You can still get some parts for the Covel/Atlas/Craftsman power hacksaw from Clausing. Sears parts also sells them but Clausing is cheaper.

Got the wrenches cleaned up at work...unfortunately the small one is just going to go in my "old tools box" as it's hardly usable.

Here are a few pics...the knurled nut is almost flat in some spots, other spots it is chipped. more or less it skips when you try and open it. if I put pressure on the jaw I can get it to move, when it wants to.

Yeah, that one's toast. Compare the nut diameter, length and pin size to a more common brand, and if they match, watch for one that is DOA other than the nut... I resurrected a double ended Crescent that way using a donor for the missing jaw,,,

Well all is not lost, I suppose. I found another old wrench for my collection! It was in the trunk of my dad's car, so I traded him a Craftsman 6" adjustable.
This one is a JP Danielson Bet-R-Grip.

OK guys, back for another weekend!
Hit this sale up first thing today and I was NOT disappointed!
first, an assortment of tools for 12 bucks! Wiss snips, Barcalo and Blackhawk pliers, Vaco screwdriver, Nicholson and Craftsman files, and assorted allen wrenches, including a box marked Holo-Krome.
DSCN6274.jpg

I simply could not pass up this bench vise for 35 bucks! I have been looking for a new (old vise) for some time now, and this one is perfect. I put a piece of plywood underneath and bolted it to my bench. That sucker is HEAVY. The brand is Samson, which I have never heard of.

Great find on the vise Jeff!

A general question on your bench though. So many bench tools, so little space to work? and is that electronics gear I see below your grinder? :shocking:

Do you happen to have a B&D workmate? If so, or if you can get your hands on one, do what I did with all your "bench mounted" tools (except the vise...)

Get some 3/4 or so ply and mount the tool to that. then glue screw an inverted "T" to the bottom of the plywood mounting plate.

Now you can clamp the bench tool into the Workmate's vise to use it and the "T" keeps it secure in case the vise jaws work loose or slip a little, (more important for something like an arbor press, where you are levering on it..)

I have my miter box, (manual back saw), abrasive chop saw, bench grinders, arbor press, and 4" jointer, set up like that, and my compound miter saw, and 1" belt/strip/disc sander are headed that way.

For some of them I built a 2' wide "book case" and used adjustable shelf standards inside, cut the mounting plates to exactly 2' and i just drop the tools into the unit for storage.

I have my grinder, key machine, and vise on that bench. Below the grinder is my sound system. I use my other bench to do all my work. I have my laptop, pinning mat, kits and parts. When I need to work on something larger like a PC, I just move things around.
My dream shop will have a LOT more bench space lol.
