A few weeks ago, I added a porch on to my house. Wife's request. If I ever want that bigger garage in the future, this was necessary.

So now the wife wanted a porch swing. And I've always wanted a reason to build a ring roller. Perfect.

I basically built it out of scrap I had around (except the bearings). And I overbuilt it. It happens. I just kind of designed it as I went.

Cut out side plates with a torch and cleaned them up on the mill. This would have been a good time to build that CNC plasma cutter but need more $$$. Would have saved a lot of time on the plates.

The rollers are 2.5" OD and 3" wide with a 3/4" shaft. The shaft will be the weak point. It happens. And I'm using needle bearings. Why 3" wide? It's what I had. And should be enough for what I'll need.

As I said, I didn't have much of a plan. It was built around a 12 ton bottle jack. Overkill but I had it.

As with all of my projects, it lets me practice welding without wasting.

Here it is.

And first up was a handle. You'll see the finished wheel later on. (should have made it a bigger diameter but it was the first thing I made on it).

It worked well. It rolled the 1/2" tubing very easily. Only problem is that it tracked all over the place which I expected. I tried doing some bumpers which you may see in some other pictures, but I don't like it. And I don't feel like milling out grooves. And locking collars are too expensive. So I dug deep into the pile of scrap and found a 2.5" ID 3.75" OD piece of tube (seen in a picture above). So I'll make my own later. For what I needed to do at this time, it worked fine.

I also needed a bender. I made something similar for another project I'm working on. Yes, it's made out of aluminum but I had some scrap pieces that worked great. My lathe isn't that good to turn down a lot of metal quickly so any short cuts help. It is a 3" diameter die and the top half can be flipped to bend 1/2" tubing.

I had a rough idea what I wanted so I started building.

Figured I'd give the top bar a little arch.

I would have loved to read about your project and seen the pictures - but I just can't keep scrolling back and forth like that....

Maybe I can reduce the picture size at my end somehow?....:dunno:

Great work on all of the above. Despite the tracking problem it looks like the ring roller is making some very respectable bends.

I'm looking forward to seeing the completed swing. Are you copying a commercial design or is this all from scratch out of the notebook?

Hold ctrl and then scroll the page smaller with your mouse and see if that helps you with the pictures etc. you should be able to make the page smaller and bigger that way.

Thanks HOTFR, that helps, but it makes the normal size pages smaller and there are issues with centering as well.

Oh well - time to get the manual out I guess - thanks again....

You will find so many uses for that ring roller. I made mine just to make the cockpit surround edge on my car but have used it for dozens of other projects since, handwheels probably being the most common. Nice job on the roller and bender. On the bender, do you have anything that produces the depression on the inside of the bend or does it form naturally?

Its post like this is why I am here! I love this, you wanted to make something and you made a really nice tool to make it. I really envy the folks here who have such tallent. Good work. My wife and I took a vacation in Chattanooga TN on a old docked paddlewheel boat. They had one of the nicest porch swings I have ever sat on. I cheated by drawing out the side and took pictures. That way I could use it to make a pattern. But to start off like you did and first make a tool is talent. There is no shortage of talent on this site. I can't wait to see more pics, keep up the good work.

It did do alright. It just took longer because I had to keep straightening the piece.

I'm just kind of designing as I go. No real plan.

Is that a mill table I see holding down that tube bender??

Sadly yes. I've been meaning to mount a receiver into my floor for things like this but I haven't done it yet. I need to get on that.

I love the ingenuity of your benders. Makes a great looking bend.
Square tubing is the worst to bend, specially a tight bend like that.

Yes, I have seen what happens when I try too tight of a bend. The new one works out alright.

I saw your bender before. Don't remember where though. Actually saved a few of the pictures and used it for the basis of mine. Hope you don't mind :) Nice work on the MG.That's quite an undertaking.

The bender does it naturally as it stretches the steel.

And thanks everyone. Glad you enjoy.

The seat support will be four 1-1/2" x 1/8" slats that will hold a piece of plywood. The wife already bought a cushion so nothing fancy for the bottom.

PS0001.jpg

I made a bender to wrap the ends around the tube. Not the best but didn't feel like wasting time on a tool I won't use again.

Didn't take a picture with all 4 but it's not that exciting.

The one idea that I did have from the beginning was slicing some tubing and welding them together.

photo14.jpg

photo15.jpg

Cleaned them up on the lathe.

PS0005.jpg

PS0006.jpg

PS0008.jpg

Finished picture later.

So I decided to make another tool. It twists metal. I've seen them before but I figured I could make one.

I'm making it right now to do half inch square pieces. Since I keep everything metal, I have an old set of HF impact sockets that couldn't handle the impact.

I annealed it with a torch and cut it with the band saw. I cut it so the bar stock could pass through if I didn't want to twist the whole piece.

photo2-1.jpg

On the other end, I used a socket that was the right size to fit into a piece of tubing I had.

And the frame is 1-1/2" tubing. The stationary mount is 2" tubing so the whole thing is adjustable.

PS0013.jpg

PS0010.jpg

And I welded a nut onto a piece of pipe for the handle.

PS0011.jpg

And I welded together 4 pieces of 1/4" round rod and gave it a twist.

PS0012.jpg

I could then twist it in the other direction to make what I think is called a basket?? Don't want that now though. Wouldn't be comfortable. I'm going to get some 1/4" square bar and do the same thing but I didn't make it to McMaster on my way home today.

So here's where I'm at tonight.

Dude...you really know your materials. It is clear that there is a seamless transfer from idea to fabrication for you. You truly have an artistic flair.

Cool!

M_P

Thanks M_P. It's starting to become an obsession. And I can't stop.

Great work -- just like the dozer.

Plus, that's going to be a very heavy swing. :)

Thanks Jack. It's actually not going to be too bad. I weighed it today (minus the arm rest) and it came in at 40lbs. I shouldn't add anymore than about 15-20 more pounds by the time I'm done. I looked up commercially available swings when I started and they weigh anywhere from 50-60lbs. 60lbs still is a lot but I knew that when I built the porch so it can handle the weight.

I finished the top portion. Only did a few twists. The rest is 1/2" square tubing. Nothing exciting so here are the finished pictures.

PS003.jpg

PS002.jpg

I bought caps to finish off the ends.
PS004.jpg

Ended up slicing some more tubing and welded them together.

PS001.jpg

PS005.jpg

Then I wrapped it with some 1/2" x 1/8" bar.

PS006.jpg

PS007.jpg

Then I bent the end down a bit. Had to use the torch for that.

PS008.jpg

Only did one in case I didn't like it. I think it's alright. So I'll make another one and mount them. Then all I have left is to finish the back, drill holes for eye bolts, and paint it.

It's really looking good; great ingenuity both in tool and swing fabrication!

Just got to ask the obvious question - are you going to make a unique chain to hang it too?

Nope. I just got some stainless steel chain from the Depot. I don't want to spend too much more time on it. I'd like to get back to the dozer project.

I made some shaft collars from some tube that I had. 2-1/2" ID shaft collars cost way too much.

They aren't perfect so I numbered them to keep them matched.
PS0150.jpg

I made the arm rest supports. They turned out alright but they were free handed. I hate that. That's why I spend so much time making jigs, fixtures, special tools etc. I'll live with them though. They are just a little different on each side.

Gave the last pieces for the back rest a little arc. The collars worked alright. I need to spend more time lining them up.

PS0158.jpg

Decided to add two pieces of 1/2" square stock that I twisted. Didn't want to add too many because of the weight but I thought they looked neat.

PS0159.jpg

PS0160.jpg

PS0161.jpg

I hung it up to try it out. It's actually really comfortable. I got the arc in the back rest just right. And the final weight minus paint came in at 65 lbs. A little more than I expected but those 1/2" square stock pieces added a lot. Oh well. It's still fine by me.

Last thing to do is paint. Still deciding how I'm going to do that with all of the areas that I need to get paint into. We'll see what happens.

That piece of yard (porch) art deserves a professional powder coat finish; well done! Besides, if you pay someone to p.c. the swing, you can get back to work on the Cat. Hey, maybe the p.c. shop will give you a two-fer quote for both the swing and the Cat bolt-on pieces; what do you think, will the wife go for a Caterpillar Yellow Porch Swing? lol

Well, I went the cheap route for now. Rustoleum. I know that it will rust but for right now, I just wanted to get it out of my garage and enjoy if for the rest of the season. That will give me time to look into a place that will e-coat it for me. That's the only want to completely cover all of the rings and twists. Spray just isn't going to get paint every where I need. It needs to be dipped. So I'll look into it over the winter and just enjoy the swing for the rest of this year. And I need to do something about the plywood. I thought the cushion would cover it better. Oh well.

Glad to see this got moved to fabrication. If I spent as much time as I want to on all the different parts of this forum I would not have a life LOL.

Nice swing. Lemme ask you though, how do you find the time for all of these projects? I took 2 weeks off work to put floor pans in my 79 Camaro and haven't gotten half way through that for all the other projects that pop up. Garage organization, home repairs, car repairs (unexpected), more garage organization because it is soo small, spending time with my wife, holidays, and so on. I have seen your dozer, and it is impressive. How do you find all this time? How many hours do you have into the swing?
