I've been in the bench grinder search for going on month's now.

This auction is up now and I'm bidding on a few different ones.

Could I get your opinions and stop points on them?

First up: Baldor 712 on Stand
http://www.westauction.com/auction/808/item/48783
My dream grinder, I'm guessing I'll go to at least $150 on this guy? If it passes that then I move to...

Number 2: Dayton 5" Bench Grinder
http://www.westauction.com/auction/808/item/48640
Not sure how far to go, not sure how good these are

and number 3: Craftsman 3/4hp
http://www.westauction.com/auction/808/item/48688
Same, not sure what to go on this one.

Thanks all!

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. Wish me luck, I've been having an extremely hard time finding a good deal on a decent grinder.

The Baldor on the stand looks nice to me, but it'll probably go for too much. I own a block grinder and am happy with it, that's where my vote would go if you have a budget.

Can anyone ID the bench grinder attached? Found it on Craigslist, the seller claims it is a "Coast" brand. Google brings up absolutely NOTHING on that name.

You would be very happy with the Dayton & it looks like it's going to sell at a good price. They are well made.

Be aware that there are a lot of last-minute bidders in the West Auctions.
Bid what you are willing to pay, not just enough to take over the lead in bidding, or you will get skunked in the final minutes.
I have picked up a few things from them, but have lost many more that looked like great deals until they jumped up in bidding in the final minutes.

Thanks for the tip Steevo, I'm new to this game and figured this much, they probably hate newbie's like me coming in raising up prices before the final minutes.

That Baldor WITH the stand went for a damn good deal! Less than $175 is excellent (not garage sale $5 YOU **** level, but excellent value none-the-less!)

I've got a red one, and I love it!

So the auction is coming to an end. The Baldor is going to be out of the question, up to $250 as of posting this. I'm winning on the craftsman with a $49 bid, can I ask what you all would spend if it comes down to the wire?

I'm also curious if I miss the Craftsman about how much the Dayton is worth. I'm really not sure how far to go.

WOW $440. Somebody is impulsive.

I would probably personally put a ceiling of 60 for the block grinder and 70 or 80 for the Dayton. I probably wouldn't even buy a 5 inch grinder though anyway.

Can I ask why Bronc? Not enough balls to handle what?

A little background, I'm just a IT guy by day, garage tinkerer by night. Just looking for a bench grinder in the garage to sharpen some blades, probably do some light grinding, nothing crazy.

I'm no expert either, just another garage tinkerer. But yes, basically because of the lack of muscle. I don't know what the RPM of that Dayton is but a 5" wheel has about 60% of the surface feet per minute speed of an 8" grinder at the same RPM and 1/4HP (probably 3amp) isn't too much. I'm sure it's a good grinder but I think you might end up liking the craftsman 3/4 HP block grinder (I noticed you won that one too. Cool ) a little more than the Dayton. If only for the extra grunt.

Yea, double dipped and won them both. I found a cool vintage craftsman block grinder restoration post on another forum. I think I'm more excited to restore the Craftsman than anything else.

Thanks again everyone for helping this newbie out!

I'm surprised that Dayton went that high it seems overpriced.

I have a 1/3 or 1/4 HP Craftsman grinder, honestly I sharpen mower blades and pick axe heads with it no problem.

A 3/4 HP grinder would scare me

Great price on it though, $45 is a good price provided it works.

Where was the restoration thread?

I thought there was a pretty good one on here as well but I can't seem to find it currently.

There's a thread on the block grinders on this forum too, post up some more pictures when you get it. I paid more than that for one of my 1/2 horse ones, good price.

I've watched those West Auctions before and all of the stuff seems to go very very high --- a lot higher than similar stuff on Craigslist IMO
