I bought a 1/3 HP from a guy at a yard sale last summer for $5.00. He plugged it in to show me it worked and said the only thing wrong with it was it spun for a long time after you shut it off. lol.

In restoring these grinders, is there anything which should be done to the armature and stator? I'm seeing some light rust on them in places, but I'm kind of feeling that since it worked before, I shouldn't do anything to it. Last thing I'd want to do is screw up the motor!

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a block grinder because the shape of the motor housing is a little different than most of the others depicted in this thread, but I figured I'd post a couple pictures anyway. My dad bought this grinder new back in the mid 1970s.

Found this one on Craigslist, 100+ miles away. Seller still had it a week later when I was making a trip down that way. So, 30 miles out of my way, & $30.00. Guess I did ok. Model 397.19391

anyone ever see a block grinder style tool sharpener? I just ran into one yesterday but the guy didn't want to sell. Looks a lot like a block grinder but has no outside covers and the label has tool sharpener instead of grinder.

Confusing to say the least- current draws:
1/4 HP -257.191200 - 4.9 Amps
1/3 HP -257.190170 - 2.1 Amps
1/3 HP -397.19580 - 3.5 Amps
1/3 HP -397.19391 - 4.7 Amps
1/2 HP -397.14460 - 3.1 Amps *
1/2 HP -257.191401 -5.1 Amps.

Numbers taken from pictures previously posted.
Theoretically,
1/4 HP = 1.55 Amps
1/3 HP = 2.07 Amps
1/2 HP = 3.1 Amps. *

Even assuming less than stellar efficiency, some of the numbers seem odd.
I do have a 1/4 HP motor on my scroll saw that draws about 4.5 amps, measured. Doesn't vary much from no load to full load either.

Odd, I say, Just ODD.

Guys, I need your sharp eyes. I'm looking at this

http://fresno.craigslist.org/tls/3455845838.html

I called the guy and he really couldn't provide much information. He didn't know the HP but thought it was 1hp because it was the same size as another one he had. He didn't know the wheel size either. When I asked if he had the wheel guard, he said he had a wire wheel on it. He thought the brand was Baldor but then called back to say it was "industrial".

So does anyone recognize it? Is it an old block grinder?

The other wheel guard looks to be stored under the table/stand.

Looks like a Craftsman to me.

It is an old round top block grinder. The guard is beneath it on the stand. As long as it doesn’t make any heinous noise it is worth $50

You can almost see the crown logo in the photo.

buy it NOW!

Here's my Craigslist score for today. $40 with the stand. 1/3 HP. Stand has a bit of overspray but it should clean up. Came with a drill grinding attachment. Please forgive my crappy cell phone pics. A little elbow grease and it'll be as good as new :D

First time I've seen one with a brake. Let us know how it works, when you figure it out of course lol

look at the rear grinder in the top picture of the first post on page two.

I no longer own it.

1950's Craftsman Block grinder I picked up today, my x-mas gift:)

This thing is huge compared to my 1974 Craftsman Block Grinder. It will get a full restore when time permits.

Nice, there are a lot of guys looking for the elusive 8" wheel and/or 1 HP models.

Another amperage figure (7.6) to add to the list from the previous page:

Confusing to say the least- current draws:
1/4 HP -257.191200 - 4.9 Amps
1/3 HP -257.190170 - 2.1 Amps
1/3 HP -397.19580 - 3.5 Amps
1/3 HP -397.19391 - 4.7 Amps
1/2 HP -397.14460 - 3.1 Amps *
1/2 HP -257.191401 -5.1 Amps.
1 HP - 257.192190 - 7.6 Amps

Numbers taken from pictures previously posted.
Theoretically,
1/4 HP = 1.55 Amps
1/3 HP = 2.07 Amps
1/2 HP = 3.1 Amps. *

Craftsman 1/3 HP. Craigslist find. As purchased / not cleaned up yet.

Anyone have information on the disc sander attachment? Haven't found any manufacturer's identifiers.

893cv, what's the base look like? Good score!

Holy **** Shootingblanks, I would have walked both ways uphill in the snow storm for that 1hp!!!

And mcmlvif100, that disc attachment looks kinda DIY but I would rock it!!

You guys all scored, good posts!!

Here is my follow up to my original post #101....

The 1/3 HP has been torn down and repaired a few items and turned it in to a Christmas Present for my father. Hopefully he liked it, he didn't say much about it when he opened it.

Next up is that 3/4HP from the same post #101!

Edited to add colors:
Rustoleum Hammered Copper and Rustoleum Ivory all in one Paint and Primer. The Ivory is over a base coat of Rustoleum all in one Flat White to help the Ivory be true.

Odd, I say, Just ODD.

Part of the difference may be split phase vs. capacitor start motors. I have seen small fractional HP split phase motors take very large amounts of current. One 1/6hp motor used 9 amps unloaded or loaded. I presume the power factor was very low unloaded and increased with load.

Teter09 - nice job!

What colors did you use, very good combination.

Thanks Torqueman! I couldn't have done it without your other thread and the label!

I wound up using Rustoleum Hammered Copper and Ivory. Though I will say, I had to use a bit of Hammered White Primer and Paint All-in-one instead of my other primer (which is gray). For some reason the Ivory does NOT cover at all, despite multiple coats, it looked more like a clear coat with glitter! So I had to sandblast the eye guards twice in order to get them right.

Here's my current project. This poor 7" grinder has seen better days... is currently disassembled. I'll give it new bearings, strip the paint and repaint it the original brown/gold, new glass, wiring, cord. It likely took a fall at some point in its life which cracked the glass and bent the shield frame (which I just straightened). When I disassembled it, I could also see a visible shaft wobble on the right side which measured around .01" with the dial indicator. A hammer, a block of wood, and carefully placed whacks later, the shaft is straight to less than .001".

I also have the original pedestal stand, but unfortunately, the pedestal table is missing a chunk of metal at one corner. If anyone has an "extra" original Craftsman grinder pedestal table, please let me know.

Factory date stamp is November 7, 1962.

I'll be sure to post an "after" picture when this project is done. Really looking forward to running this grinder.
