Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Tried replacing brakes on a Jeep WJ only to find out that the brake calipers didn't accept the brake pads I had in my hands. Turns out that there was a recall back around 2002 for the calipers sticking and my brother could have gotten the new ones. Appears that all auto parts stores have the part # for the new ones but not the old ones.

So I put it back together and then went under the hood and changed the thermostat housing. 150,000 miles and the original thermostat. Lets just say the gasket that came with the Jeep was fused to the 4.0 :)

Finished up the key rack. Used some spare spokes as the hooks.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

disassembled and cleaned/lubed my new bench vise, reassembled, and mounted to my workbench. Had to grind down a washer so it would fit up over the bolt and up against the leg of the workbench. Made a wooden handle for one of my ******* files and set it aside to dry. Also polished my dress shoes.

Cut the sides of my palette rack, then rewelded to make it not so deep.

Had to fit the truck back in the garage somehow.

I traced the footprint of the chain ring piece onto the wood then used a dremel to carve it out a bit. Stuck them in there with a little wood glue. Not very structurally sound I imagine but they are more for decorative purposes. The shelf isn't going to hold anything heavy.

Finished up a customers 07 Jeep Wrangler. I installed a B&M transmission cooler, serviced front and rear axles, serviced transfer case and transmission. I wish all jobs were this easy. Gotta love the cake jobs, as they are far and few between.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Do you have a link for that combustion vent kit?

Here you go, but the Mr Heater unit in your your signature is not a separate combustion designed unit so this kit will not do anything different than what you already have on your installation. I apoligize in advance if you intended to use this kit for something else.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

welded some supports on my utility trailer tongue so i can mount my winch;
My son bought the winch for me fathers Day (2000# ATV one) and I have wanted to mount it since but have not wanted to leave the winch exposed to the elements; I bought a plastic truck bed tool box (NOT over the rail type) for this but it is just too big
I found an older Craftsman hand carry toolbox (remember the ones that sold in the 70s and 80s) at a garage sale for $2 they made 3 different sizes of tehse boxes. this is the middle model (24"long ) and seems itll be just about right.
I plan to bolt the winch thru the bottom of the box to the trailer, to the new cross braces I welded to the tongue today and take my Milwaukee 4-1/2" grinder and cut a window in the back wall for the hook to pass thru, then fasten a oiece of conveyor belt to the box around the window to keep the weather out... plenty of room for a few tiedowns and the pendant that operates the winch, close the lid, latch and it even has a hasp to lock it.. theres enough room to mount a garden tractor battery in there too if I decide to (added idea/input from a neighbor that stopped by)

The sports car needed detailing. Did that, but also saw a lot of swirl marks that I willl need to polish out. Perhaps that will happen tomorrow. Need to get some Meguiers Ultimate polish.

Thanks, After I taped off around the headlight to protect the paint, I cleaned with Novus #1 plastic cleaner. I then polished using my Griot's Garage 3" DA polishing machine and Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. I then applied Novus #1 as a protectant.

If the headlights are worse than these, and believe me I've done some that are a lot worse, they need to be sanded first with anything from 500 to 3000 sandpaper, then polished. Meguiar's has a headlight protectant I'm going to get and start using as a final step.

You guessed my intention!

As yours looks very similar to mine, I wasn't sure if there was a kit I might be able to adapt.

I know that my Mr Heater is not intended to be closed combustion, but if the intake to the burner was sourced from outside, it'd be isolated I think...?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

A while back there was a thread about messy garage's. It reminded me that mine had gotten out of control.

I'm retired but I waited until after the evening meal each day to dig into the mess. It took 4 to 6 hours each day for two weeks. I put out three big refuse containers each week.

Found my conduit bender that went missing years ago, the original remote for the garage TV which I replaced long time ago with a universal one and many other items.

The bench tops are now clear and everything is back to organized. There is still a lot of stuff. I have yet to dump 30 years accumulation of bicycle parts. Before I retired I fixed bikes for kids and adults to keep them riding. Did about 100 to 150 a year in the south Chicago suburbs. I live in a very small town now and there is almost no demand.

No pictures yet but I will post a new one with the previous one.

The reason for separate combustion type furnaces is for use in shops with wood dust, paint fumes or they work with combustible liquids like gasoline. You don't want these fumes or wood dust getting exposed to open flames. Bad things can happen. :FIREdevil
I suppose if you sealed off all the open vents in the side of your Mr. Heater and also put a gasket around the burner access panel, then cut a 4" hole in the burner box to mount the outside air duct to then you could have a separate combustion type unit. On mine you can't even see the burner. It's completely enclosed.

The vent kit arrived today. Looks like it's put together well. I'm thinking of installing it with the duct box enclosed in the wall vs. mounted on the inside surface. Not sure if that's code so I'll call the manufacturer to see what they have to say.

My building inspector considers the garage a likely candidate for all those bad items you mentioned. This is why I did not get a permit nor ask for permission.

I understand those risks and will do what I can to minimize them. I won't cut wood nearby and the gas cans are on the other side of the garage... plus gas vapor sinks I believe so that helps.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Since my toolbox is not against a wall, it killed me to see all that wasted space on the back. So, I added a 24"x48" pegboard panel framed with 2x2 and painted in Craftsman red/grey. Will probably use for air lines and shop vac hose/attachments, etc.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I want one! Is a metal bandsaw inherently different than a wood saw, or is it just the blade?

Speeds are the biggest difference. Metal cutting bandsaws will need to be much slower RPM. The easiest way to tell the difference is a metal cutting bandsaw will generally have a gearbox whereas a wood bandsaw will not, just a belt and pulley system.

I would also recommend a bi-metal blade vs. a standard metal cutting blade. Since I switched to bi-metal blades a few years back I have really cut down on my blade replacement/usage, get it cut back. Sorry, I am in a funny mood this morning.

Yesterday the parts showed up for a customers Yamaha motorcycle. I installed a new pickup coil, side cover, routed the wiring and charged the battery.

Hopefully tonight I can get it fired and call the customer to come and get it.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finished these up pretty late. Unless my customer falls in love and decides to put them on one of his own rides, they will be for sale at his booth at the Mopar Nationals.

Powder coat colors are Ironsides II, Ultra Silver Texture and Silk Satin Black.
