HF torque wrench kit vs. Proto ratchet kit - PICS

NOTE - This comparison is using the only HF torque wrench and Proto ratchet I have available. I don't know if HF has altered their torque wrench designs since I bought this model. Nor do I know if all Proto ratchets use an identical mechanism.

In another thread a member mentioned he had used a Proto rebuild kit in a Harbor Freight torque wrench. I knew the HF wrench used a copy of the Proto design, but I had never tried to swap them.

I decided to do some comparisons. This is a 1/2" drive HF torque wrench I purchased about 4 years ago and an older Proto 5449 1/2" drive ratchet.

What I found is that (using my examples) the kits are similar, but not identical. The main differences are in the pawls.

In my case, you can put a Proto kit in the HF torque wrench and it will work, but you cannot put a HF torque wrench mechanism in a Proto ratchet, because the HF pawls won’t fit in the Proto ratchet body.

Here you can see the designs are very similar. The HF clearly uses a copy of the old Proto design, which has been in use for decades.

Here, the gears are swapped. The HF gear is in the Proto ratchet and vica versa. They both seem to work.

Here’s where the differences come into play. The pawls are not the same. The HF pawl is fatter on the bottom. So, the Proto pawl will fit in the HF ratchet head, but the HF pawl will not fit in the Proto ratchet body.

The Proto pawl fits the HF ratchet head

Still wondering what those 2 holes are for under the selector switch. Seen it in a bunch of other Proto-copies too.

Those are where the pawls sit in the ratchet body. There has to be a gap to allow the, to move freely.

That is funny, we must have read the same thread because I did the same experiment last night also.

In addition to your observations, I discovered on my two samples, the HF cover plate and screws are metric threaded versus SAE for the PROTO.

Was the HF bone dry inside? I wonder if the rest of us with HF torque wenches should open them up and give them a squirt of SuberLube.

Good info. I didn't try to swap the screws or cover plates.

Still good info and gives options for either tool if one was to break and you need to source donor parts like the gear and springs and even the cover plate so long as you transfer over the thread pattern screw with it.

Every one I have seen is bone dry. Little lube here helps.

Another bit of advice if you do not use your HF torque wrench all the time, about every 6 months or so, adjust the wrench to max torque and back down to the bottom low torque range. This keeps the internal adjustment threading lubed and worked in. If not, it can be hard to adjust after prolong storage.

The Proto design; is one of the most copied designs ever...

URREA, has the same designs; because, they made tools for Proto in the past...

A couple of years ago, yes. Today though, URREA has moved away from quite a bit of the classic PROTO legacy designs and has introduced ratchets, sockets and wrenches on their own tooling designs.
