I have an old single stage jack that I purchased at a flea market fifteen years ago. That just wasn't very stable. And what would make for a better Christmas present? But a Ranger RTJ-1 Two-stage Transmission Jack. The first stage has a 2,000 pound capacity while the second stage has a 1,000. The lowered height is 37” and full extension is 79” http://www.bendpak.com/ranger-products/transmission-jacks/RTJ-1.aspx

Arrived neatly strapped on pallet. Using a nylon sling and my bridge crane I lowered it to the floor.

Within 20 minutes I removed it from the box and had it assembled. The first picture is in its' lowered position. Next full first stage extension. Lastly at full extension.

You wouldn't be replacing a ****** anytime soon, would you?

I want to get one of those so bad, just haven't found a nice used one in my price range yet.

Hell yes, me likey.

What'd this gem run you?

Report back after you've tried it.

The RTJ-1 will set you back about $570.00 including shipping cost.

Here's my old half ton transmission jack. That's in good working condition. If you're interested, let's talk. I'm sure that we can work out something on it. Also I still have other items you may be interested in too. Like an engine rebuilding stand, cherry picker, ect...

You have a cherry picker that you need to eliminate from your garage? Was that a serious comment or just for BMWpower? If serious, can you tell me about it? I tried to PM but your inbox is full.

I prefer the flat top that the old one has. If I was you (which I am absolutely not) I would take that old top off and put it on the new one!

Indeed that was a serious comment. I have a lot of duplicates left since I purchased the equipment from an antique car restoring shop last year. I've sold off a lot; but I have more to go. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25222

The engine hoist that I'd like to sell is a 4,000 pound capacity Sunex. Pictures to follow...

On the transmission lift, you will end up, in some cases, fabricating an adapter to fit. That adapter is almost the same as the one I bought to use on my NAPA floor jack and while it worked OK on my auto transaxle, It was marginal on my Ranger 5 speed. If I have to do the transaxle again, I will replace one of the pieces with a fabricated angle iron piece cut to fit the ******, so as to give me frame clearance.

I got the same transmission jack, after doing some online research and seeing some good reviews. I have been extremely disappointed in it. I don't know if Ranger's quality has gone down hill recently (an drastically) or what.

When I got it, it did not have the 4 axis adjustable head it was supposed to come with - it came with a cheaper front-back tilt and side shift head. The cheap head was also cocked to the side - in the direction it can't be tilted straight. After complaining to the supplier multiple times for months I finally got the correct head. The new head had so much play in the pivot points that the transmission could be tilted side to side and front to back probably 10 degrees. With a 350 lb Allison transmission this can be scary, even with a custom cradle that fits tight around the trans pan. After having an NV5600 fall off, we had to go back to dealing with the original head strictly for safety. That accident bent a leg and the stud of a caster so I had Ranger send a caster, which was heavier duty than the originals, but was also bigger diameter and couldn't be used.

The latest problem is that it will not go all the way down without a lot of weight on it. Also the lowering pedal is cheap pot metal and broken on one side.

By the way this jack is about 8 months old.
