I am looking to upgrade my lock set on my HF 41" Tool Chest in the hopes of having a better lock and also getting my bottom and top chest keyed alike. I have searched quite a bit and it sounds like its possible but I am not sure what my options are. Can the barrel key tumblers from the 56in HF/Snap-On/ETC. chest be put in?

virtually any barrel lock should work, as long as the hole is the same size and the notches are similar! i have four boxes, all using the same key. chicago lock, i think it was, called, asked for 4 of the same. at the time it was 6 bucks a piece...

K2LA for two locks and keys, about 40$

They have up to seven locks keyed alike with two key's. Subistute the "2" in the part # for 1-7 for how many locks you want.

What I had to file fit a little was on the lock hole itself and the square hole on the lock bars.

Thanks for the help. Are these locks both 90 and 180 degree turning cam locks? The HF top chest is a 90 degree turn and the bottom chest is a 180 degree turn.

They have a notch in them for 1/4 turn, so 12:00 (top) to about 3:00. Otherwise the square does stick out. The S-O lock bars have a detent of sorts so they only 1/4 turn.

Anyone with success on re-keying alike or replacing locks that are keyed alike?

I recently re-keyed my 4 boxes. I have 2 - 44" cabinets and 2 side cabinets all lined up as a workbench. I purchased a 5 lock same key set from Harbor Freight customer service. About $44 shipped. (item #12892 - description - 90320 5LOCKS W/SAME 5KEYS 1PC)

As far as the 90 and 180 turn locks, the locks in my cabinets are all 180 turn. The locks they sent me were 90 degree, however I simply switched the small disc on the back as I swapped out each lock.

It took a few emails back and forth with HF CS but they finally got me the part number for the 5 lock same key set, then I had to call and order. Definitely worth the $ for me to have 1 key.

Yeah those are tubular locks, one of the most common brands is Chicago Ace. Good stuff!
Any good locksmith should be able to rekey them for you as well.

the keys were the same style keys you get with the box. I dont know how to describe their tumbler style, but they have stepped ridges at 12 and 6 on the key.

this is not the exact lock, but it is the key style, from the same manufacture.

aba locks

I searched for a replacement for about a month and in the end, just calling customer service and ordering HF oem locks with matching keys was too easy to pass up. The only security feature I need really is the ability to keep the drawers inaccessible to my children. If someone wants my tools from my HF box, there is next to nothing that will stop them from simply cutting the box open.

they call it "pagoda"

the key / keyway only has a north / south, not a 4 pole configuration.

jfish,
Thanks for the part #. I had been trying to order a set of locks from HF, but the goobers on the phone can't search for anything that isn't listed for a specific item. If it isn't on the computer, they don't know how to go "off script". Thanks to you, I was able to give them the part # and avoid the "What box do you have?" questions that kept derailing previous attempts.
