I am looking at getting a Milwaukee Cordless Impact Wrench. A lot of mechanics swear by them, even in the professional garage world, compared to Snap On and even Matco.

Does the "friction ring" or the "pin detent" hold sockets better?

-And-

Should I get one with the "friction ring" or the "pin detent"?

Thank You Much,
Greg

Havent tried the milwakee w/ pin detent but the snap on pins are hard to throw a socket on usually have to press it in with a finger or pocket screwdriver. But the friction ring on the milwaukee works great just got my 1/2 early this week I love it to death. It sapped off an axle nut on my integra no problem! Also if your looking for a deal on some m18 tools I got the 1/2in 3/8ths and a fuel hammer drill off ebay for 500 bucks shipped from a seller buzzardgulch. Good luck id go with friction ring but youll be happy either way!

Get The Ring, Unless You Only Use 1 Or 2 Sockets A Day. Using A Pick To Free Your socket Would Become A Huge hassle.

I had a Milwaukee with detent pin. It was annoying to use, but then again, I was working on cars where there are more than 1 size of fastener. All my current impact guns have friction rings and I have yet to throw a socket around..

Driving lag bolts on the roof? Get a detent. Anything else? Hog ring.

Hog ring. I think the pin retainer is more intended for industrial use, where a dedicated impact will be used on the same size fastener a LOT..not so good for the DIY guy, or tech, who has to switch socket sizes frequently.

As others have said, if you change sockets with any frequency, get the ring. I have the pin version and I keep an old Klein mini screwdriver that the tip broke off of just for getting sockets off of it. The pin is nice if you use the same socket or 2 all day though.
