In an online auction delirium, I just bought this SnapOn top box for $85. I have no idea what model number it is, and can't pick it up until saturday. The only info I have is an inadequate description from the listing.

Metal tool chest, expected scratches on paint, 9 drawers and storage in top section. 31X15X18

All I have is the 3 pictures from the listing.
So - What can you tell me about it ?

(pic #4 is a "Craftsman stack with some odd tools" that I also won for another $55)

It looks to be a kra 59, but the side handles are not right to the best of my knowledge. The SO badge on the drop front that is hidden in the first picture?

As far as I can tell right now, the drop front is folded under the lid in the first picture. I'll know more about the condition when I can pick it up in 2 days.

O you ****.

It is a 70's possibly early 80's KRA-61, the late model "super chest".

Where do you find these auctions? Did I mention YOU ****.

I would say it looks like a KRA61 with those handles. If the drop down front has two handles that should prove it. Looks a nice box for $85.

http://www.maxsold.com/

I stumbled upon this auction site in a CL listing. I got lucky, most of their auctions are in Canada, and they don't ship. Pick-up only or arrange your own pick-up and shipping. This auction was within reasonable driving distance, and I just got a late paycheck. A bad combination for my wallet. :D . I also had to pay a 10% buyer's premium, and state sales tax.

I paid a total of $210.37 for this box (I'm hoping that it isn't empty), two tubs of misc. tools (including a few Cman teardrop rats), and the top/bottom combo with mystery tools in the 4th pic above.

I'll post pics in the 2013 Garage Sale thread when I have the items spread out on my shop floor. I just thought I'd start early, so I could get a feel for what I paid for on the SO.

Back in the Mid 80's I bought a KRA-61 (still have it). like that one for $50.00 from a guy that liked to get high and drunk. I should have asked him about his tools at that time.

Man, that site is useless on the eastern seaboard unless you live in canada.
Tried looking for auctions here and up north. But you sir have got great deals there.

Keep an eye on the site. They have an upcoming auction in the D.C. area that is close enough for a roadtrip p/u for you if they have anything worthy that you might win.

But yeah, the pickings are slim unless you live in the Ontario area. I got lucky this time around.

Weeeelllllllll ........... SH* T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got off the phone with the auction company. It seems that the seller isn't honoring his contract, and refuses to allow anyone on his property for pick-up. So, the auction has been voided and the auction company is refunding all the buyers. They plan on taking him to court, but in the meantime those of us who bought items will get our money back, but are otherwise SOL.

I got a confirmation email for the refund, but it hasn't shown up on my bank statement yet. You can bet I'll be watching for it to show up soon.

I guess I'm back to searching for a cheap vintage toolbox again.

I think I'll go down into the shop and break something now. [grrrrrrrrr]

Thanks for the heads-up, but I'm afraid that shipping from VA to New England would more than double the cost.

I'm good on toolboxes for now, but was excited to p/u something vintage at a good price. Not to mention the tote full of old Craftsman tools that I had in another lot. Oh well, something will turn up eventually. Maybe something even better, who knows. That's the fun of the hunt. :dunno:

looks like an old KRA59 but hard to tell, it should have had a front cover over the drawers with a lock. the nameplate (SNAPON) would have been attached in upper right or left corner. there was usually a model# and serial# stamped onthe back! this very "experienced" box is 1970s thru 1980s as best i can guess!!!!! paint her up, its COOL.

Well, the seller found another broker and had a new Estate Sale today. I went down to see if the items that I had originally bought were still there. I was hoping (wishful thinking) that the SnapOn box would be still there. Nope. The only item that I had won at the original auction that was still there was the Montgomery Wards bottom cabinet. All the other good stuff was picked clean before the estate sale started. There were a couple of Cman top boxes from the 80's or 90's, but they were a mess and covered in a thick sludge of grease and grime. There were a couple of TaskForce boxes left as well.

I made it out with the MW box and a body hammer for $35, which was more than I wanted to pay, but I was too disgusted by the other selling prices to haggle and just wanted out.
