The H.A.M.B. is in the shop for a bit getting the full custom treatment. We will be back real soon.
Your pals, Ryan and the German

Looks like Ryan is making some updates to the site/forum.

I'm aware of that message, but 5 days? WTH is he doing?

I believe he had stated at the beginning that they had no idea how long it would take. It's just one of those deals where you gotta' dig in and see what happens. 'Course I know nothing of what is really involved in this sort of thing so I just take Ryan's word and be patient.

If you read the rest of hid message, he says something like " a few hours to a couple days". I'm paraphrasing but that's is the gist of his message. And today is the fifth day.
I'm sorta hoping one of his minions over here will check and see what's going on.
Here in the Southeast US, we are in the midst of final organizing for one of our main events for the year in Union, SC called "Steel in Motion", and this puts a definite crimp in our efforts.

Over 100,000 members and Hundred's of thousands threads and Him and the German have to back all those files up and then reload all new software for the site and then the all new layout/design. It's gonna take some time and I'm 100% sure that Ryan never expected it to take this long and is probably biting his nails on it!! He doesn't like it when the Hamb is down, he knows a lot of guys rely on it and spend a lot of time there. Keep checking back and they'll get it loaded up!

Just heard from a HAMB Mod (Rocky) I know personally and he said sit back and relax as it will be worth the wait. Be patient as I am sure Ryan has it all in control.

It could be worse as many here have been without Phone and Internet for about the same time.

There's no doubt in my mind that I can find entertainment and useful info here on Garage Journal.
But as I related in post #6, Steel in Motion is next weekend, and is a top event in the Southeast US, as well as an annual reunion venue for the S.F.C.C., of which I am a member.
We have members that are scattered, due to employment needs, etc., over the states of GA, SC, Wi, and Ontario, Canada. We will be camping at SIM, and the HAMB was/is an important tool to us in organizing our logistics on such things as who brings the grill, who brings the charcoal, who brings a countless bunch of stuff that we all use and share to stay the weekend.
Now we must resort to such primitive things as phone calls! LOL :)

I see the message has change so I take that as Ryan may have had an issue with the update. I would prefer it that he has it running as he wants it before he opens it again.

As for communication with out the forums well I have many contacts that I can use away from the forum not just phone and email. We all need a back up.

As I stated earlier issues here have seen many in Australia without out EFTPOS, Internet and phone due to a supplier failure so things could me much worse.

They are trying to change over to a new software package called Xenforo

Xenforo.com

I would speculate that they have run into scalability issues.

The current front page for the site looks terrible and is quite slow at loading too.

Well thanks man. That's real of nice of you to say.

...

Everything is going fine at the moment. It was just a ton of data to migrate... Terrabytes of images and what not...

With any luck, we will be back up and running real soon.

Hi Ryan,

I am only tendering what I see.

As I type the HAMB's database has already crashed and the forum cannot be accessed.

When the forum was up briefly for me it was very slow to scroll through a thread. There is a considerable amount of wasted realestate now as compared to the previous setup, which was the same as this site.

I find it asthonishing that no real testing of this new software was done, as can be clearly shown by the serious issues regarding the uploading and display of images.

Images are germane to HAMB, for the members to showcase their rides and the exchange of technical information between members.

Maybe you might take a walk through the Xenforo Wiki site.......

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XenForo

...... where you would have learnt that Xenforo is run by a group of disgruntled former employees of vBulletin, who thought they could build a better mouse trap.......

I consider it far more important that a site owner gets feedback from users, no matter the points of view expressed, than to be left in the dark as to why their site has a drop in visitors.

Out of interest, why did you decide to change the software for the HAMB? How did you get involved with Xenforo, as in who approched who?

You don't seem to be too hip on technology man... or, atleast, the world of forum software. The DB never crashed. We opened the forum to get a load so that we could tune the servers for INNODB.

As for "wasted real estate," that's called white space.

In any case, thanks for your opinions.

I'm close to having withdrawal symptoms. I'm afraid my wife is going to find me curled up in a fetal position next to the computer, wimpering.

I tried logging on earlier today, only got the new first page and the "in the garage" statement. Interensted to see what the rest looks like once it's up and running again.

I've been an alliance member for several years on HAMB, as I believe in paying my way wherever I go in whatever I do.
If the problem is money, then maybe we need to make it a dues paying site so that all of us can contribute to the cost of maintaining the site.
Money may not be the problem, but whatever IS the problem, I hope it's resolved soon.

There is no problem at all man - money or otherwise... We are just making a VERY big technology change... And I'm doing it in a pretty unprofessional manner. That said, I'm doing it! And having a lot of fun despite my complete lack of sleep over the last seven days.

I'm hoping to have the servers tuned and ready to go by tomorrow morning.

Hi Ryan,

I attempted to reload a page and I got "Database exception, please try again later."

AIX, OS/2 and DB2.

Good luck with your new software.

Looking forward to seeing the new HAMB! I sense a lot of folks are having withdrawal symptoms and need their HAMB fix baaaaddd. I'm sure it will be worth the wait, so take your time and get it right.

Can we assume that GJ will eventually be migrated to the new software also?

Yes, garagejournal.com is next on my list. The feature set is just so much better with Xenforo, plus we built some crazy custom additions that really extend and simply things.

All that being said, it will be a while. This one has taken a lot of piss and vinegar out of me!
