Here are some measurements, pictures, and the how to for the Slatwall Cabinet I built recently:

I recently found out how versatile and useful slatwall sheets can be, and decided to try my hand at creating a cabinet. The reason for the dimensions I came up with is so that I could make the most use out of one 4X8 sheet of MDF Slatwall.

I am sure there are better ways to do this, but this only took me an hour and a half and it was easy.

1. First I ripped one 4.5" strip off the sheet so that I had 8 feet of single slat so use in my shed separate from the cabinet.

2. Next I cut the back piece (43.5" tall and 48" wide) from the rest of the sheet.

3. Then I cut two 2X3 wood to 43.5" long and mounted them on the front side edges of the back piece of slatwall. Screw from the slatwall into the 2x3 for a better bite and use tiny washers on the screws to keep the screws from pulling through the MDF.

4. The bottom piece is a 2X6 cut 51" long and it secures to both the 2X6s on the side and the 2X3 on the front.

5. A 2x4 is cut 48" long and fits inside the two sides at the top, and then cut a 4.5" tall strip of Slatwall and mount that to the 2x4.

6. Cut two Slatwall doors measuring 43.5" tall X 23.5" wide

7. Cut 4-2X4 pieces 3.5" long and screw them into the doors as shown in the pictures. I set each chunk 1.5" away from the top and bottom of the door. Keep the 2X4 chunks overhanging 1/4" inch off the door so that the hinge is free to swing.

8. Cut a 1X2 for each door to mount on an angle to support the doors and keep them stiff. Also add a 38.5" 90 degree trim piece on the end of each door.

9. Add a cabinet door pull or handles to each door.

10. Screw a hinge to each of the blocks of wood on each door.

11. Rotate the whole cabinet onto its side end so that the 43.5" long 2X6 is on the garage floor. Then use some scrap 2x4 on the floor to stabilize each door as you screw the hinges onto the 2X6 frame.

12. Once the doors are fitting how you like them you can sort out the latching mechanism..... One of my doors has a latch and the other friction fits to stay secure after the other one is closed.

With a cabinet that shallow, what are your plans to fill it up with? Hand tools maybe? That would be a good cabinet to hold small parts if you built a bunch of bins that would hook in there.
