I've had a dremel oscillating tool for years now. I bought it right when it came out when fein's patent ran out and all the other manufacturers came out with their versions. It's worked pretty good but the head has always gotten really hot. Today I think it finally crapped out. It got hot and then seemed like it wasn't vibrating right. It turns on and for lack of a better description has a rough idle.

So I'm looking to replace this one. This one is smaller and not a lot of power, and now it's really lacking power. I'm looking to keep it under 100 bucks. I use this tool but not a ton. So not looking to spend a lot and get the best out there. But also don't want a piece of junk.

Is the 40 dollar HF version ****? Looking at this 80 dollar ridgid Jobmax, http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-JobMax-3-Amp-Multi-Tool-Starter-Kit-R28600/202672276. Looks to be descent and also kind of like the option to have different heads. Any other contenders in the 100 and under price tag?

I've heard good things about the Rockwell versions (Sonicrafter)

I too felt the need to upgrade from the dremel version but was able to catch a decent deal on a fein from Sears

I have two of them. I have the $19.00 HF one. I use this for dry wall things that are really dusty. Then I have the Variable speed Dremel. They are both great tools. If the HF breaks you can buy the warranty or just get a coupon and buy another.
I like the ones with the Fein features like no tool blade replacing. I have seen Feins come down in price but everyone makes them.

The heads on both of mine get hot.

Good Luck.

I bought the Remington version when they first came out. All the contractors that I talked to told me that the Dremel version crapped out on them under daily use. I used to sell 10-15 Rockwells a month to the local contractors, they loved them. One even bought each of his crew one for christmas one year.

I bought the HF one right when they came out. I wasn't sure how much I would use it so I figured I'd buy the cheap one and then decide how much to spend on the inevitable replacement. Well I don't use it a lot, but it's been a solid value. Only complaint is it is really loud.

I know you don't want to spend the money for a Fein, but I would suggest handling one. They are worth every penny and are definitely the epitome of "buy once, cry once." Just a thought. :)

Either buy the Bosch or Fein high end ones or the HF variable speed one. Don't bother with anything in the middle.

I bougfht the Porter Cable. I've only used it a few times installing laminate flooring, but I like it. My son-in-law has the HF, and a good friend has the Rockwell, which he used doing a whole house remodel.

Bought the Porter Cable with quick change blade on sale from Lowe's, weeks ago for $40. Came with carrying bag and two blades. Haven't used it yet but I do have a job for it.
