Whew! I feel better already
I just found out about this forum through some buddies of mine on Vital Mx. Motocross is my other addiction(the reason I need a big garage). I began construction on my GarageMahal in September. We are sheeting the roof today in spite of the last few days of snow,rain,freezing rain,sleet and blowing wind.
Dimensions are 42'x82' it includes an 800sft ground level living unit(for my Pop in law) in the footprint. It's located in Bend,Oregon on 23 acres and it is surrounded by a miniature outdoor motocross track that is always in a state of evolution. I'll post some pics if you guys like. I am here for help. I wish I found the site before I started construction but too late for that. I really would like to tap into the vast knowledge available here to make the best of this garage project. Here are the plans.

Thanks guys, Here are some pics of the progress so far, starting with excavation. I started the excavation with my skid steer and my buddies mini excavator. We ended up running into some classic volcanic basalt rock and had to bring in the heavy artillery John Deere 590.








The excavation is complete, now to set forms. We are doing a footing with stemwall

Stemwall forms going on top of the already poured footings. We chose to do a two part pour to keep things nice and square.


We poured the stemwall with a line pump.

In between steps I sometimes get sidetracked working on my MX track

Foundation is complete and it's time to backfill where the main shop slab will go. We need to hurry before the freezing weather hits.


With the slope of the site I ended up with a pretty tall foundation wall on the North side of the building so it took a lot of fill material to bring it up to grade for the flat work. Luckily my land came with it's own pumice pit which works excellent for fill material and it's free. I just had to move it myself. IT took 21 dump trailer loads to get where we needed.

Happy concrete finishers, they are happy because they get to ride the track while waiting for concrete to set up.

Foundation,slab and underfloor framing done and inspected, next up living space floor decking and then onto the fun part the framing.

Patrick: that is one of the nicest first post any of us has probably written and with great pictures too. may i suggest you move this over to the garage gallery and start a thread with a title like Patrick's new Oregon Garage with home and race track included or something like that.

Thanks ! I am having a blast building this.I would be happy to move the thread, what's the best way? Just start over? The dump trailer is a C&B they are out of Caldwell Idaho. I've had it for a year and it's been a great tool. It's a 14k gvw. 7x14.

My wife and I visited the Newberry Crater area last summer and were impressed with the area. We'll be back to explore more and hope to hike the South Sister peak route.

now go to the Forum which is on the top of the main page. click on that and you'll see a lot of catagories. see the Garage gallery thread? now click on that and at the top of the threads you see "start a new thread". click on that and it will be similar to your post you made here.

pick a name for the title that says what you'd like it to say because it might be there for years with all the stuff you have (race track, gravel pit and a ton of land to play on). then post pretty much the same post you did here with lots of pictures and you'll get a lot of comments and questions.

even on the busy threads there isn't much activity some days or weeks so keep posting updates, answering questions and you'll be surprised what you learn.

by the way do you happen to remember the price range on the trailer because i'm thinking of either getting a little bigger aluminum one with dual wheels for ease of moving or just keeping my 4 x 8 and buying a dump trailer.

Sounds good Drive. I think I paid right around $7,000 for the trailer. I bought it at a dealer here in Bend last year. I noticed that you can get them a little cheaper over in Idaho but with fuel it wasn't worth the drive. I forgot to answer your last question, the land parcel is 22.5 acres. The property is a pumice butte and it still actually emits a little bit of heat. You can see steam rising out of vents on really cold days. I will start a new thread tonight when I get back in the office. I have lots of framing photos ready to go so maybe I'll start it with those ? I also think a mod could move it over there too.

Thanks Movin, glad you guys enjoyed the visit to Central Oregon. It is really a great place. We moved here just about 15 years ago from the Philadelphia area and absolutely love it. I have three sons ages 9,14,18. It has been a great place for them to grow up. I still haven't visited Brookings yet and I hear lots of good things about it. It is on my list of coastal cities to visit soon. There's a great Motocross facility down that way called Riley Ranch. I thinks it's a little closer to Coos Bay but want to do a little toy hauler trip down.

Nice very nice. Luckily I don't live any where close. Because I would be there like a nosey neighbour watching the progress. LOL

Patrick: i'm sure a moderator could move this over, but if you have the time keep it here where members can see you are a new member. then put a link in this thread with the "Bend, Oregon retreat" or whatever name you pick for the new thread so they can click one time to see that.

by the way if you ever get stuck and might need an answer having a bunch of old and young guys watching your thread can be a good thing.

May I recommend you simply begin a new thread as suggested above, and then simply continue from where you leave off here. Simply post a link in your opening post that points back here for "the beginning", and of course, post a link from here over to the new continuing build post.

Sounds good, and thanks for the advice to get maximum exposure. I definitely want all the input and advice I can get to make sure I do everything as close to right as possible the first time. I have been a member of Vital MX forum since 2004? That is the only forum I really use. It's a trip down memory lane coming here as Vital MX formerly Motodrive used to use this forum platform. The new thread is up with framing pictures and some track pics. Thanks again,
