Why are the all 3+" long ?

Yeah you need something to grip to remove you socket, but the hex end should lock into the impact right ?

I have Dewalt and Kobalt adapters and they're way too long. Here is a previous thread. I posted early in it with a link to other threads on the same subject.

I have SK locking 1/4. 3 different lengths.

I asked the same question a while back, snap-on makes one and surprisingly it's reasonably priced. Or for a little more $$ some of the HF bit sets have one in it. This is for 1/4" drive only though, I have not looked for 3/8".

I have them they lock the sockets on and are great. I broke one after a couple years and sk sent me a new one

I think both Milwaukee and DeWalt has a short 1.5"ish version. Saw them at my local CanadianTire and HomeDepot.

the milwaukee shockwave adapters are short - the makita ones are really short, and also have a wobble square drive..

Here are the Craftsman, they were either $1.59 or $1.89 for the set. Sorry I can't get you a part # at the moment. Both pieces are just a bit under 2" long.

Impact ones need to absorb shock, regulars don't and are shorter...that's why all impact bits are 50mm and regulars are 30mm...the extensions are just the same sizin logic. Can definitly find short version, look at apex or industrial type manufacturers for the full range of sizes if a shockwave is'nt gonna work.

They are just as long as everyone elses 2-3"

All of the really short ones have no detent for the hex drive retainer. My guess is they are for a hand driver.
