Cooling Compressor Air Lines

I know there's been a thousand threads, but I want to get specific.

I'm going to have a general purpose compressor. It will be used for air to air tools, a blast cabinet and occasional painting.

I want to cool the air to help get the water out.

I know there are coolers you can hook up, but fear there isn't a reasonable cost solution. Tell me if I'm wrong. Is there a way to use some kind of radiator to extract heat?

So I've seen copper tubing used for this purpose, either coils or sticks. Kind of a manifold? I don't mind a coil above the compressor, since that area is dead space anyway. Or I could use sticks of copper pipe on the wall or ceiling.

Please tell me my options and how to lay it out.

I want to maximize air flow, so what size should I use? And what wall/type?

I assume this would then transition into black pipe to get the air to where it needs to go.

I know there needs to be filters and an oiler and drops for water removal. Give me your best/economical solutions.

Here is what I did - cool it out of the head and 90% of the water goes in the tank and not in the line.

I believe it was a 50' coil of 1/2 bendable copper tubing.

Any number of setups can be used. 1/2" is a good size for a home compressor. If you can re-purpose a cooling coil (AC, ******, Hydraulic cooler, etc), it would save having to build one.

In any case you will remove moisture and cool the air, but it will still be saturated with water. Not a big issue unless you are painting. In that case get one of those disposable in-line desiccant filters. You don't want to risk ruining your paint job.

If you run a big main line I don't think you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to cool the air. The line will do it just fine all by itself.
I ran all of my lines in black pipe. 3/4" for the main lines with 1/2" for all of the drops. Longest main line is about 40'. I have drops at about 15' to 20' intervals. This system has been in place since '06. Whenever I do a cleanout I get very little moisture out any of the drops. The big main line cools the air just fine and I have no issues running my blaster out at the end of the main line with a 10' 1/2" drop.
Before I hardlined the shop I ran off a hose and had to use a filter to keep water out of the tools. Now I don't bother unless I am painting.
