Technically it should be oil lubricated. I just use straight 30 weight oil, which is what most industrial pumps call for every 6 months to a year. What compressor do you have?

For my compressor I change the oil in it once a year...I don't use it every day, but I feel that changing the oil once a year at least is a good practice for occasional use. Needs to be done more often of course if you run the compressor a lot. But for home use I'd say at least change it once a year at a minimum. Oil is far cheaper than a new compressor, and they don't use much oil so its not like a major expense to change the oil.

I have a HF compressor, but with my 30+ year old Wards compressor I changed the oil in it once a year at a minimum. There were a couple years where I was using it a lot so I changed it twice during those years.

Both compressors I run regular compressor oil in them from Campbell Hausfeld. It seems to do just fine. It gets cold here in Idaho during the winter so running regular 30 weight oil is too heavy. I haven't had any issues with the compressor during the summer running it with regular compressor oil.

As far as using synthetic, I wouldn't start with synthetic until after the break-in period so after the first recommended oil change on the compressor then you could switch over. There's nothing wrong with running synthetic, just people have recommended not to do so during the break-in process as it may cause seals not to properly seal, rings to not seat properly, etc.

I change the oil once a year in my home 5hp. piston compressor with straight 30 weight. I've been doing that for over 30 years. Never had any problems.

The only times that I knew to use a different oil was for screw type compressors that I was responsible for. They either used ATF (an old Quincy 25hp) or SYN (Atlas-Copco 15hp & 25hp).

Most pumps use 500 hr schedule with dino and that would bring it to about 10 yrs with a home home comp. I think the synth is quite a bit better in this case. I got 2 I havnt changed in 20 and my main a year or 3 ago and it looked so nice it was tempting to pass then but it wwas up in the 1000 hr or above range.

I am running I/R synthetic compressor oil in the pump on my I/R T-30 compressor.
I changed it a few years ago when I got the compressor and modified it from gas to electric.
I may change the oil again in the next year or so.

I use Amsoil PCK and change it every 2 years with filter. If I run it once a month it would be a busy month for it.

I have the same pump and use the same oil. I don't use mine often, so I changed it after 5 years. It looked like new, so I won't change it again for another 5 years.

I have a Curtis gas powered. Curtis calls for RC-1000. Anybody know of any crossovers? Every crossover that I have found sells in 5 gallons or more. I'm thinking about Royal Purple recip. 100. I will have to make a phone call first. 2800 dollar compressor don't want to F 'it up.

Amsoil or Royal Purplle. What it costs doesnt have much to do with it, I have it in my 4K comp pump.

I use DeWalt D55001 Synthetic Compressor Oil on my Craftsman Professional compressor. The manual says you're supposed to use synthetic (of course, the only compressor oil they sold at Sears was the dino variety - go figure.)

I change my oil out once a year regardless of how much I use the compressor. Like another person said, 300 hours is what you should change it at, but I use mine less than that in a year. Use the kind of oil your manual tells you to use. If you go with synthetic, DeWalt puts out a really good product. I've noticed my compressor runs nice and quiet using this stuff.

I am running air compressor oil 30 W from Amsoil. It is crystal clear when new, I have 200 hrs. on now and it is still crystal clear. Compressor is an Ajax V twin 2 stage, 80 gallon tank running at 175 PSI. No issues.
