I think most would buy a Taiwan clone Craftsman ratchet just for the ease of warranty and availability. People do like the Craftsman name.

I personally don't take much issue with Taiwanese made stuff. As long as the OEM is good. I've got a fair amount of Taiwanese sockets, and a handful of ratchets. They are doing solid service. One of my daily beaters is a Gearwrench roto-head, and it's been kicking for about 2 years (daily fleet service) post warranty on the first one, which broke on a rusted up exhaust bolt. That was probably more my mistake than a bad tool.

If Cman started switching over to Taiwan as COO, and came out with some good stuff, I'd be tempted. I've got some Cman USA stuff, and some CMan Chinese. Both work. Neither are spectacular really... I do like the matte chrome on the older USA ratchets though. But, they get the job done for what they are, and that counts for something right? If Cman came out with a set of long/extra longs with some sort of anti-slip, I'd be game.

I read a lot of threads praising the square handles on the US made 84 tooth premium ratchets. Now CM is offering these handles on the 75 tooth ratchet for a low price.

Does the Craftsman 75 Tooth Full Polish Ratchets replace the Craftsman 84 Tooth Premium USA Rachets?

Craftsman 84 Tooth Premium USA Rachets still have a slimmer profile head for tight areas and they are probably longer so you can apply more torque.

Has anyone seen one of these in person yet? I saw one at my local sears because on of the 82pc bit sets had been opened. It is a HUGE step up from the standard ratchet. Big negative though is it seems to have a plastic direction selector. I could be wrong because I only looked at it very briefly

Should be craftsman = USA and cost more with lifetime warranty and evolv = China/Taiwan and limited warranty.

That was the concept about 10 years ago:lol:

I saw one at the SEMA Craftsman booth. Yes, the direction switch is plastic. I also thought the 3/8 drive ratchet was heavy for a 3/8 drive ratchet.

I think these are the replacement for the old RP's. I think they are a good value.

Not available in my area...

I thought about the "Discontinued" Craftsman Premium Grade Ratchets...:D

But I decided on the GearWrench 4pc Flex Head Ratchet Set...:rocker::evil:

they were inexpensive on clearance, looked absolutely awesome, but I've never had a ratchet lock up on me so much. takes a trip to the vise to make it work again, and that's after I grab a Proto with fewer teeth than a crack ***** to finish the job.

I absolutely LOVE those ratchets. I was so stoked to get the 1/2" on sale at $50, and the 3/8" I got refunded the difference to the clearance price.

I, however, don't like how they lock up. I've had the 3/8" ratchet stop turning under a couple pickups. Have to take it to the vise. Proto finishes the job, though. My Proto is maybe 50% as nice to use, and I only grab it after the Craftsman 84t fails, but at least it doesn't seize mid job.

Anyone get to look at the internals yet?

Same design as the single floating pawl "Gearwrench"/thinprofiles, but the pawl and gear are wider.

Selector is metal, has no seal, and cover plate is not the standard tear drop shape.

Very smooth, made in China.

Won't own one because these things are HEAVY. Way too heavy to swing constantly. And plus they are imported. Not to mention the grease used smells disgusting. I had to wash my hands several times and the smell still took two days to dissipate.

Almost considered buying a set just to take a look at them and for possible parts interchangeability with other ratchets. Anyone that's bought a set, pics would be great!

While they follow the Danaher design, they are dimensionally different. I played around seeing if other thin profile Craftsman gear sets would interchange and they do not. As mentioned previously, these newer ratchets uses a wider gear set and the step cuts for the selector on the gear are done different.

They are more heavy across the board than any other ratchet I have held. I weighed the 1/2" one on a home postal scale and it came in at 1'-13oz. The old style Craftsman 1/2 ratchet is only 1'-5oz and a Snap On S80 1/2 ratchet is only 1'-8oz. This extra weight I can see being more fatiguing if used as a daily user.

Tempting, from buba's pictures it looks pretty nice, handle looks great. But if they are that heavy I'll pass, once they get in stock at my store I will take a look. I need more ratchets like I need a hole in my head, although I might buy a 3/8 hf composite, I might have a problem.

I'm wondering when these will be available for sale with out the sets? Seems to be replacing the standard ratchet in sets. Would be a step above the current version.

Looks like this...

I'm wondering where is the pawl spring? I can see how the pawl is switched back and forth with the selector bump, but what holds it against the gear in use and lets it slip when in reverse?

There is a spring under the pin. I just did not pull the spring/ping combo out of the selector for the picture.

Are these the "Next Generation" ratchets that will replace the RP?

Think so, I heard that these are what is in the socket sets now. If they are, I might actually start using my old raised panels and hope they fall apart.

I believe they are Taiwanese...a big step up compared to the RP USA or China ratchets which have been on the market too long.

For fun, I used a RP 1/4 drive USA to put together a bandsaw stand. They worked - never skipped, but felt like ****.

DSLTRK said they were china, I haven't seen them in person so I can't say.
About time they binned the RP, it is the worst ratchet I own, pretty much anything is more satisfying to use. The heart of the problem is there is a massive amount of slop in the pawl. I have a napa USA ratchet with the same mech, but is a lot nicer to use and has little slop. I hope the old stock of RP's get cleared out quick so if I have to warranty something, I get a new one.
Sears says there is none within 50 miles of me but I am going to pick up some irwin auto strippers tommorow and check if they have any of these.

I believe they are China also as they have the "D" prefix in front of the "AE" date code and every "D" prefix Craftsman tool I have seen to date was China made.

They may be a bit heavy, but from playing with them in store, they seem decently nice. Way better than the RP ratchets. I'd look forward to craftman putting out more tools of this level of quality (yes, I know, longterm we know nothing about these ratchets, but they look promising).

Lol....with the amount of RPs in this world, they'll be rebuilding for warranty swaps for a loooong time.

I think the go all USA thing is just something people like to rant about, like vegan's who eat meat...everyone says they want to buy USA made, but the buying behavior says otherwise.

if the new china craftsman were not total junk I would think about it, but, they are junk and look like junk, they are a joke
