Facom switched the production of some wrenches back to France. As far as I'm aware those ratchets are made in Taiwan, but it is possible Facom might have switched the assembly and some parts of the manufacturing back to France, which would allow them to use a "Made in France" label.

It's possible the main handle forging is French.

The flex handle palm control ratchets are made by USAG in Italy which is part of the same group of companies. At least the one I have is.

As far as I'm able to tell, the 'original' patterns of Facom tools, such as the ratchet shown, are still made in France, or Italy! Either is acceptable!

Again, as far as I can tell, the newer patterns all seem to be made in Taiwan!

There seem to be very few examples of the same patterns being made in both countries.

I presume that the plan is to eventually drop the European made tools and 'force' customers to buy Taiwanese, however for the time being, unless there is a lot of old stock around, the original patterns still seem to be available, if you take the trouble to look around!

Nice ratchets too, really smooth and nicely finished!

Traditional Facom palm control ratchets and torque wrenches being made in their plant in Gemonio Italy

Screwdrivers, Allen keys, Saws and locking pliers at their D'Arbois plant

Small plant at Laissey making pliers. I wonder if it's still operational ?

Roller cabinets at Vimeu

I haven't bought Facom in a number of years, I hope they keep the quality up. IMO, the Made in France socket sets I have are some of the best I own. Fit and finish is second to none (some of the best chrome I've seen) and the Palm Control ratchets are smooth!

I found a website in French that said the production of retaining ring pliers had been moved to China. It didn't say that the Laissey plant had been shut down though.

I had one of the older FACOM fine tooth ratchets and it was very smooth. R.161, IIRC? It was French.

Ha-ha! I loved how the video kept saying "moins d'efforts". Less effort...so we can get back to French bread sword fighting, eating jelly crescents, and oui oui oui hon hon hon. (I'm just joking around. ^_^)

When I was doing ratchet research, I found out that the old SK tri-wing style drive mechanism pack was designed by Facom's Italian division. I know they used to be a part of SK, but its neat how the tool world is connected.

Their 360 versions are also from Taiwan. They even put a sticker with "Made in Taiwan" on the box. And from my experience I can tell the chrome on the French/Italian versions is much better. I own a 3/8" 360 version and it has already lost a lot of the chrome plating on the head.

Thanks guys,

I asked an eBay seller and told me that the S.171 non- lock ratchet is made in France.

Is this true?

If yes, what would be of better quality and feel the Italy or France made?

*For information, I have the Stahlwille 435 QRN 80 teeth and is really small and good.

I just need one more and I can also compare and provide some feedback and photos!

Thanks

There's no difference in the European made stuff. I've got a Facom 1/2" long flex palm ratchet from some time back which was made in Italy. Most of my other Facom has 'France' stamped on it including some torx T-handles I got a couple of months back.

I've also got the 80 teeth Stahlwille 435QR N. It must be the smoothest ratchet out there. Better than my Snap-On FX80

I have the Facom 161 made in France and a new Proto version made in Italy 5252f .
The Facom is much smoother in my opinion.
Paid $39 local for the French Facom and $32 for the Proto at Zoro.
I would pay the extra $7 for the butter smooth Facom.
The SK tuff 1 seems to be soother than the Proto also, but it is lubed and the Proto is Not.

Both 3/8th. The Facom is the j.161

They are very different really. The Stahlwille is a FOD design. No screws to drop out into aero engines. The Facom comes apart in seconds but I haven't seen anyone here get the Stahlwille apart yet.

I've got a new J.161 coming in on monday. I'm going to fit the mechanism and square drive into a 1/4" palm to get a Frankenratchet. Fits straight in apparently.

One thing to watch out for on the smaller palm controls is dried out grease. They start to auto-reverse. People think they are faulty but remove the grease, lightly oil and loctite the main screw to the correct tension and they are normally fixed.

brace of 1/2 and 3/8th

I still get at least 1 call or email a week from someone with a Facom ratchet that is seized up or slipping because they haven't used it in 6 months. A little penetrating oil at the ratchet head and work it back and forth for a few minutes and the grease should loosen without having to take the ratchet apart. If not, disassemble, clean, relube and reassemble and you're good to go.

I'll have to try that switch with the ratchet heads...3/8" head in a R.161 handle now that Facom has discontinued the stubby J.161E.

Nice collection of Facom ratchets..........some of those are no longer available. Facom seems to be moving towards the newer "maintenance free" pear head ratchets.

Here you go. Drops straight in and works perfectly.

what are the actual differences between different facom ratchets? i find them a bit confusing to understand and cypher what each marking means..

like names.. are RL series 1/4", JL is 3/8" and SL is 1/2"?

----
and then there is the "standard ratchet" s.151 and "palm control ratchet" s.161. how do those differ? was the palm control the one with head you can lean into when ratcheting? (basically the number 6 means the palm?)

and the red release(?) button one is the one with handle you can twist and ratchet too, right? what was this items number or letter of nominification?

See page 229 on....

http://www.facom.com/partage/f13/en/appli.html

The red button is socket lock and quick release
