So I picked up this GearWrench 14 piece 3/8″ drive shallow socket set for my tool cart and to feed my tool addiction. I already have a 3/8″ shallow metric socket set but it does not include 6mm, 7mm, 8mm and 9mm (i love that it includes those sizes) sizes. Plus the set I have is made by challenger (i have no idea who they are) and now has a few sockets from Matco, Snap-on and Mac (Yes i lost a few sockets or broke them over the years). Me being too cheap to buy a compete set from the tool truck I just purchased them as needed, *@#$this mismatched family of sockets resides in my tool box and i keep another 14 piece GearWrench semi deep metric set (love this set) in my tool cart that I use many times every single day that I work (get yourself some semi deep sockets they are awsome) and if I’m not using them one of the new guys are. So this shallow 14 piece set is going on my tool cart to compliment the semi deep set.

I like the fact that this set included every size from 6mm to 19mm and did not skip any size in between, *@#$I like that it comes on a very good rail that you don’t want to toss in the trash (take note Home Depot, Sears, and Harbor Freight), i like that advanced autoparts (nation wide auto parts chain store) delivered them to my job at no extra cost within 20 minutes and if I need to warranty (lifetime warranty) one of them I can have them deliver the replacement with the quickness! The best part is that it only cost 27 bucks for the set.

How do they work? Well they work just fine. I have only had the shallow set for 1 day but I have been using the semi deep GearWrench socket set for about a year now and I have had no issues with poor fitment or rounding fasteners. I did loose the 10mm and was able to get a replacement the same day for like 4 bucks. The chrome is still there and not pealing like a few S&K sockets that I have they just look like any socket would look after a year of daily use.

Challenger was PROTO's economy line of yesteryear.
What is it that you don't like about the chrome on the Gearwrench sockets?
the chrome is not the same color as the Snap-on, Matco, or mac it seems lighter if that makes any sense. Maybe it'e me just nit picking But that's not really a deal breaker. The finish still holds up really well and i have no peeling on the semi deep set that i have been using for over a year now.

Are these sold as shallow sockets? Where did you buy them?
The sockets in the review are sold as shallow sockets or maybe regular sockets. The full review on my site has a picture of the packaging so you can easily find them. The semi deep sockets that i reference in the review are sold as semi deep.

The shallow sockets are actullay really shallow unlock some brands that are kind of tall.
