In 1939 B&C is bought by Billings & Spencer (B&S); A picture of B&C plus B&S.

Funny this thread was brought back by four.cycle. Going thru my "collection" of old tools the other day came across this one I had pickup up a few years ago. I think it has a pat'd date of May 4, 1869, but eyes aren't what they use to be.

Love the cool catalogs and advertising. I'm gonna print a couple to keep with my wrench.

Looks like it's time for the biennial resurrection of this thread!

First I'd like to thank four.cycle for starting the thread and for all the great catalog pages!

I was thumbing through my neighborhood “Nextdoor” website and saw an ad for “Ford Wrenches”. The ad had been up a week or two and the Ford wrenches were gone but the owner wanted to get rid of the remaining monkey wrenches and made me an offer I couldn’t pass up.

I need 36 monkey wrenches like I need another 36 holes in my head, but at $20 for the lot, that works out to $0.55 each.

The small ones are 6", most are 8", a few 10" and a single 12".

There are:
11 Coe’s
5 (maybe 7) P.S.&W. (Peck, Stow & Wilcox) (Pexto)
2 Bemis & Call H&T Co. (B&C)
2 W&B (Whitman & Barnes)
1 Hibbard
1 H.D. Smith & Co.
1 Sargent
1 Billings
1 Marshall Wells Hdwe Co.
7 Tantalizingly close-but-not-quite-readable
3 Unmarked
1 Boos Tool Corp adjustable wrench – not a monkey wrench

I know these things are a dime a dozen—damn, I really DID overpay—but I’m already enjoying researching their history. If anyone has any insight into any of them, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks

Picked up this tiny jobbie at the flea market this morning. The jaws need to be dressed up, and I don't think there's anything special about it, although I have never seen the marking on the flip side before (See Pic 3). EDIT: I guess perhaps it was made before 1869, when Loring and Aury started fighting, and Loring demanded credit, or after 1881, when they made up, and were joined in a single enterprise again, and the credit was a stipulation. But that's all speculation, I know the history of the related companies is exceedingly complex.
