NTZ: Brian nice work and you have SKILLS

ALL: so I posted a restored wood blueprint cabinet a couple weeks ago I think and look what followed me home today. i'm resting and getting ready to have a late lunch because had to get them out of the trailer before the rain started. my lovely bride donated her garage to me AGAIN and I really appreciate it and hope to have her car back in tomorrow or tonight if the rain stops.

anyway i'll stack these up and use them until i'm ready to restore a few of them like the one I saw. i'm stoked because didn't know i'd find these that fast. I do like metal maybe a bit better, but OLD SCHOOL WOOD CABINETS are a very close second.

cheers all

NINES: i'm guessing that means you LIKED my new cabinets so thanks for popping in.

SA: these should help get my STUFF off the floor and out of boxes so hoping I can set them up today and give my wife back her garage. thanks for the good words and until a few weeks ago I didn't know that this style cabinet existed.

ALL: one of the cabinets has a little water damage and wondering if I turn on and point one of my 150 btu kerosene heaters at it (torpedo style) if that will help dry it out. or should I just let it air dry since it's in the 60's now in my garage? also the drawers are a little sticky and wondering if DOOR EASE might work or is there a better option for wood to make them slide in and out easier?

Hello Drive :)

Nice find... I am envious.... Personally, I wouldn't put direct heat on wood. You might end up with damage from drying things out too fast. Even the sticky drawers might loosen up, once the wood has reached equilibrium with your shop. I would just leave things alone for a couple of weeks and see where things are at then. I have used candle wax for wooden drawers with good success.

Cheers... :)

NTZ: thanks for the tips and I think i'll just let them dry on their own and use DOOR EASE (it's about 90+% BEESWAX) for the slides and see if that helps. I'll keep you and GJ posted on any results as I have time to spiff these up.

I suppose this is the right place to post these Gerstner boxes.
The smaller one is covered in black leather. The larger one has the Gerstner stamp under the bottom drawer.
They both needs some love. I may try the 0000 steel wool that was posted up thread on that beautiful Union box.

User: those are great looking boxes and yes they could use a little love. or i'd just start using them because they don't look that bad now. nice finds

I have a drawer full of steel wool and I saw that tip too and i'll have to try it and see if it works and best of luck to you trying to get it to look as nice as the Union box we both saw.

Absolutely beautiful work! Did you use reclaimed flooring or was it new material? The drawer pulls look like they may have been lamp finials in an earlier life. An outstanding piece of shop furniture.

AK: not only was your time well spent making that cabinet for yourself and your bits and pieces and STUFF, but it also will be a showpiece for 100's of years to come if you pass it down or even sell it. WELL DONE

of course you had to post a saw that you used at the printing shop that I know REALLY WANT TO FIND ONE TO OWN.

cheers and what's the next project?

ALL: Anybody else make, buy or find a COOL or interesting or just a usable wood cabinet? take a few pictures and post them up and I bet others will like them even though they won't say so as often as I do.

cheers

Awesome thread! Love all the cool cabinets folks! Thanks for posting up! I will post up pics of mine soon. Not nearly as cool as all of these but I will share them anyway.

AK: for somebody that didn't have much prior experience at building cabinets you've shown a couple beauties.

thanks for posting that COOL old saw too. I have a small garage so a huge table saw isn't an option, but one like that on wheels might just work for me so i'll keep my eyes out for one now. I hadn't seen one before or known about it.

AK: thanks for the 411 about the timing of the cabinet builds and your skill was even pretty decent on the first on so looking forward to seeing more if you make any and have time to post them.

always good to get information on the spendy or UNOBTANIUM parts of a tool purchase so thanks for that. I can't say i'll ever own one or much less see one of those saws in person, but if you've spent any time reading some on GJ you'll see that I do come across a lot of tools and STUFF so I just might.

also wanted to welcome you to the forum if I haven't or somebody else hasn't and feel free to ask questions on threads if you read them and can't find the answer or start and host a thread if you have a subject and have the time.

i'm not a Mod and they are usually very helpful, but if you have a quick question that you think I might know the answer you can PM (private message is GJ's email inside the forum) me.

cheers

any more good wood cabinet finds or amazing wood cabinet builds to share please do.

Bub: thanks for posting. I like the metal wood combination. as far as value if the seller would spend a little effort cleaning up the bottom and taking close up pictures showing it's not rotten and solid I bet he'd get that money for it.

ALL: anybody else have some wood cabinets to post pictures of that they own or have seen and liked please do.

ALL: talk about expensive. the small cabinet in the picture is selling for $2200. I love the big one in the corner and don't want to ask how much it's for sale for by the same seller.

any takers??

or if cheaper would you like to own one or both like I would?

cheers and ice tea for me

DIF great post I am only going through the whole thing now (SO many great posts on GJ I always stumble upon stuff I haven't seen before . . .).
Man there are some beauties on here! You guys have me drooling. I have a very narrow (25' x 6.5') shop and I got three wall hanging cabinets from an estate sale when I bought a truckload of 1950's CM tools - the original owner had made these himself so I am proud to have them in my shop. And for the space, these have been about the best thing I could have.

CKAdams - those are some fine looking cabinets. I'd have tried to find a nice looking hasp to secure them but they are cool!

Cheers

No real reason to secure them they are in a locked shop. The latches were already on them - I put clips/chains on the latches only so I could keep them from swinging open.

Joe: thanks for the link and the picture. I bet that would take a couple hundred hours to build and quality materials wouldn't be cheap. I'll have to re join that web site so I can see how long it took one or more of their members to build it.

I was really more interested in the one back in the corner of that picture I posted.

CK: are your cabinets just sitting on a bench or do you have them mounted to a wall? thanks for sharing and looks like you've got them ORGANIZED so that you can find what you are looking for.

Magnum: I like this thread too and thanks for stopping in and taking a peek.

ALL: did I NEED more oak blueprint flat file cabinets? maybe not, but I picked up a few and in a few styles all made by Mayline years ago. they will hold a ton unless a client that rebuilds planes and needs wood cabinets for his 100 year old plans buys them all before I change them out with my metal ones.

i'll get better pictures as I get them set up but they work great considering the big 45 inch wide 34.5 inch deep drawers are not on rollers and just sliding on wood.

BTW would Beeswax work the same on wood cabinets drawers as it does on our metal cabinets and toolboxes?

Drives, those are excellent. I love "shop furniture" as you could see in my post back on page three. Flat files are unique and those are beauties. I recall when I worked at the old Sperry Rand plant in Lake Success, NY in the early '70's when drawings were still created by people putting pen and ink to paper, rows and rows of b/p files--mostly steel but a few wood that were still in use. All gone now-I wonder how many survived.

Drives-thanks for the offer. We are in Portland right now and heading back to NY end of the month. I don't have much of a shop here at the moment-my "real" shop is back in NY. Our efforts in Portland have been devoted to restoration of my wife's 102 year old family home, a great craftsman style bungalow, so I've accumulated woodworking tools primarily from our favorite source-tag and garage sales. Only a 1-bay detached garage reserved for her car and a small basement with a smaller shop area-no room for a flat file unfortunately.

BTW-a great thread. I enjoy your postings.

Tom: sounds like you have a pretty good life or just a real busy one or both. thanks for the Kudos about this thread which i think the members will fill up nicely in the future. i'm just showing what i come across and there are some amazing cabinets I'm sure that the members have made or re purposed for their shops and garages.

ALL: speaking of repurposing these old oak blueprint cabinets have the same drawer pulls as my MBC toolbox. they are old and have had some abuse, but they do have a cool look and i might have to find a spot for them in my small 10x15 garage at home. one cabinet is missing a few rails which shouldn't be hard to make and glue/nail a few back on and some of the drawers must have had too many old building plans in them because they are cracked, but all in all a pretty solid cabinet that should hold a ton of bits and pieces or tools.

these were made by Mayline and guessing in the 1960's. anybody else have some like this or come cabinets they want to post pictures of please do.

ALL: so i found a spot for 5 of the wood Mayline blueprint cabinets on some shelving i already had set up. then after i got them set up (just before filling the drawers) my OCD kicked in and i needed to move the shelves. since the shelves are 6 foot and 30 inches wide i had to take it all apart to move them after unloading all the Mayline cabinets off the shelves. i think the new look will work much better and when i load up the 25 huge drawers my mess shouldn't be so bad and maybe i'll actually have a flat surface clean. BTW i DO have FSD (Flat surface disease) because i probably don't have one that is clean and ready to use currently. i know there is a cure and still working on that which is sort of like curing cancer in my case.

cheers all

Here are my all time favorite wood cabinets, or something similar, courtesy of the united states patent office. the USPTO used to keep all the patent documents in what were called "shoe cases", each drawer being a "shoe". Patent examiner's doing their research would go to search rooms containing hundreds of these to search the prior art in their patentability determination. USPTO went paperless around the turn of the century, and decided all of these old wood cases (and newer metal ones) would be destined for the land fills, so I don't believe there are many of these still around. Drawers hold 8.5" x 11" documents.

_DSC0798ss_zpsqyb7spdw.jpg

Drawers have a cutout in them so documents can easily be removed, but these are easily covered.
