Picked up what I think is a Sheldon quick release vise. Haven't found Sheldon anywhere on it, just numbers 3b, 10b, 14 on the back side of the handle, and $10.00 written in permanent marker. :) Anyone confirm Sheldon, and some education on it? Possibly I'm missing something under the grime...

Either way, I dig it!

Hello All, Just joined and discovered the wealth of information on GJ including the vise section which I did not know much about. So thank you all in advance for all your advice to others and knowledge you have shared...

Here's the Morgan 60 that I picked up recently - 6" jaws, 143 lbs. She's a big'un. Has seen a lot of use, but still in very good condition. Will strip off the recent repaint and go back with factory medium/light blue. Morgan still sells parts, too -- will pick up a set of jaws along with a pin to keep the vise nut in place.

Just finished majority of work on these two Wilton bullets - 3.5" and 4.5" - picked both up outside Chicago. As purchased -

Tried a metallic green on the 3.5 - too loud.

Ended up with a bronze-ish metallic on the 4.5 and bright red on the 3.5.

Of course, I just ran across some really nice looking hammered green paint that appears to be an exact match for the factory Wilton paint. Had given up on getting some since you can't ship spray paint through military postal system (everything has to go via air). Now I have to repaint, but I think they'll look great.

Also waiting to receive my KMScott jaws and swivel handle for the 3.5 along with a swivel base and 4.5" jaws coming from someone else. Still need to get a swivel handle for the 4.5; it's a size (11/16"?) that Kevin Scott doesn't carry.

Picked up three 4" and one 5" bullet. Thanks to a tip from the vise magnet Joe. All have aluminum home made jaws. In the next couple of days I will get to cleaning. They came with 7 maple benches. Wife wasn't happy for the first time her truck is kicked out of the garage.

Evergreentree:

Both of my quick grip Sheldon WW vises had cast into the handle and also in the center point connection to the handle, the Sheldon name. See pics 1 & 2 of both of mine.

Pic 3 shows how the quick grip groove sections looks like.

However, my Sheldon that wasn't a quick grip, where you have to spin the handle to turn the main screw, had no Sheldon name, but is attributed to being a Sheldon as well. Pic 4

Your WW vise has the handle like the quick grip of my two Sheldon's, but I don't see the name on the center or on handle. However, the body of your WW vise is more similar to my no name Sheldon.

Kind of pieces of the two versions.

Is it a quick grip or do you have to turn handle to open/close it?

Hope this somewhat helps.

Mike

Regarding shipping USA to the UK, the last USPS medium flat rate box cost me $65 ish and a large a year ago cost $150 ish from memory. Plus you have to pay 20% VAT on arrival and any other duty applicable and an £8 processing fee for the privilege.
I wouldn't want to ship a decent sized vice, I suspect it would be to heavy really.
Amazon's international shipping is quite a lot cheaper and usually takes about 2 weeks, import duty and VAT is prepaid. As is eBay's GSP, which is also pretty reasonable going this way.
The trick is to buy the right items, either where there is a big price difference or stuff you just don't get here.

So I got a little time on the CMan 5152 today: drill and wire brush to take off the dirt and surface rust. There was much more original paint under the dirt/rust. This was just a first pass, but it cleaned up well. This thing is so pretty the way it is I may just rub a coat of wax on it and leave it as is.

Mike,
Quick grip. Is pretty much identical to your 1st vise in the 3 pictures, save the name casting....internals are identical. Looking online, many people are calling these unmarked ones Sheldons, but I'm not assuming. I'm also not up selling! I saw a few with the cast name like your beauty, so I'm most definitely not sure!

SO, maybe, maybe not a Sheldon? Ha. I'll just assume it's a replacement handle!haha

Gotta say I really dig that vise...I think that just made my list of vises I'd like to own. :bounce:

CK: I like your vise and your idea of just putting on some BLO to keep some of the original color. a little grease on the screw and some oil or light grease on the slide and anywhere metal is rubbing and it should be good to go until your next cleaning. I do like those old Rock Island Craftsman vises

HV: looks like you have a Wilton import from China, but that said you did a great job mounting it. also I have yet to meet anybody that owns one of those CHINESE WONDER VISES that don't absolutely love using them. just know they and most vises don't do well when you beat on them.

WELCOME TO THE GROUP and to the forum.

ALL: I picked up 4 vises in the last 5 days so it's not easy climbing out of the Rabbit hole. i'll post a few pictures when I have some.

I just can't get enough of that olive color, every time I see it chilang!

Looked a ton on this site before I picked the color. I used a lighter green on the Rock Island and just didn't like it. Glossy seems to show the imperfections more and the casting on these Athols is kind of rough so went with Satin. The newer Athols look really clean from what I have seen on this site, maybe they changed some of their process after Starrett bought them.

Chilang: I think the OLIVE SATIN might be the second best seller next to the BRIGHT BRIGHT SNAP ON GREEN. The Olive looks a lot nicer than the first green you painted the Rock Island vise you own. another favorite seems to be the Hammered Verde green.

anybody paint a vise orange, yellow or other color besides red or grey and the ones listed above?

I don't know how well BLO sells, but it is my personal favorite.

cheers

Speaking of BLO, I bought a quart at a garage sale this past weekend. Can't wait to try it out.

VA: I think you are correct that HV's vise is a Yost and not a Wilton that makes a similar vise with almost that same color. I agree now that I put my SUPER READER GLASSES on that you are right and his vise does look new.

HV: if your vise is a YOST you might have one made in the USA which should be even better than the CHINESE WONDER VISE that all their users love.

I had an opportunity to refinish and mount the Columbian 504 that I picked up last week. I used rustoleum professional primer, paint, and a clear coat but the finish still seems soft after 4 days of cure - I'm curious (aside of reading the restoration thread) what everyone is using as a top coat to provide durability.

Silly little vise, but it's the first I've ever bought!

This vise sold this morning in a local on-line estate auction. $100 +10% buyers premium. No, I didn't buy it. Is this brand of vise so rare the someone would willingly pay $110 for a badly broken and badly welded example.

Posted this on the 2016 Garage Sale thread but it should be included here as well:

$50 garage sale find from last Friday (6/3/2016). Wilton machinist's vise, model 101028 (4"). Schiller Park era, but keyway on slide does not seem to have any markings at all (even after cleaning and wire brushing). Am guessing a 1960s or 1970s production(?) Original swivel lock downs were replaced at some point with hex nuts. The original dust cap was missing but I've already remedied that with a steel freeze plug from the auto parts store. 2" freeze cap size was a perfect fit after minor sanding of the cap edge. Has a little bit of black rattle can paint on the jaws but it yields to mineral sprits and patience and I'm cleaning the whole thing up as time permits. Just a nice vise with honest wear and nothing broken or welded. Have been looking for one of these for a long time at a price I could afford and this one fit the bill.

A good friend of mine created a swivel base like a Power Arm and mounted a 45mm Boley vise on it. The ball swivel is from a camera Tripod named Bogen from Italy. Steve found this stuff in garage sales up here in Estes Park.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Jaw-Cutting/i-VD68pdh/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Jaw-Cutting/i-VD68pdh/0/M/Steves%20Gift%20Swivel%20Vise%20%281%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Steve has found many vises from this small Mountain town in the last thirty years. Some day I'll go over and take a few photos.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Jaw-Cutting/i-QDrBpww/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Jaw-Cutting/i-QDrBpww/0/M/Steves%20Gift%20Swivel%20Vise%20%283%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

This vise setup will bolt to a heavy plate and be used by me for all my little stuff.

Thanks Steve.

I picked this vise up yesterday. It is a "Dawn" 4-1/2" vise, made in Australia. Like vises made here in Canada (when things were actually made here) this looks a lot like an English vise (e.g. Paramo) -- presumably a legacy of our colonial past.

Anyway, I had never heard of this brand before and so thought I'd post a couple pictures. I will clean it up and paint it ...

That's a good vise....and Dawn is still in business as far as I know. I think all of them (Dawn, Paramo, etc) are generally patterned off the Record brand. I recall reading Record might have had a fire and couldn't keep up with wartime demand (WWII) so several companies were given authorization to use the design based upon a government order of some kind.

Another garage sale find from a couple weeks ago (5/12/2016). This is a Yost model 203 1/2 (3 1/2" jaws). Vise was bolted down and not tagged, but it was simply a matter of asking whether it was for sale or not. After deciding that they would sell it I ended up paying the asking price of $25.

IH: nice find and Dawn makes a quality vise. they make an offset one you might want to keep an eye peeled out for that I would like to find someday myself. I have a 6 inch version of yours and it isn't any little thing.

also about 2 months ago at least one and maybe two of our Down Under members posted a lot of information about Dawn vices history and their color if you care to read up a little more on your new found friend.

Horn: looks like a POS vise to me and if in pristine shape maybe that kind of money, but not broken dynamic and a hole in the weld. the buyer might have missed the repair and break and probably read an ad saying old US made vise.

SD: have you got the vice for vises or did you just happen to pick up a couple quality vises the last week?

I think these vises found me  I wasn't actively looking for them, I just happened to be someplace and there they were. Neither one was marked for sale but I just thought "What the heck, I'll ask" and I guess it paid off.

Drives: thanks. I'll search back for those posts. This one still has a bit of original paint - looks pretty similar to the blue Record uses.

IH: most of the Dawns I've seen and the one I own are the red color I think I see a tad of left on your vice. the members had a lot of information about them 2 or 3 months ago so if you can't find it maybe they will say what posts. or if VA has time I bet his magic search tool can.

nice find.

I put this over on the Wilton bullet date stamp thread first.
I picked this up off of Craigslist this past Sunday. I drove 3 hrs. one way to get it, but our daughter lives 10 minutes from where I met the guy and we took her and SIL to dinner. I was going to forget about it, but my wife thought it looked pretty neat and insisted we go and get it. It's in nice shape with hardly any wear on jaws. These bullets could be addicting, because I find myself looking for the next one. I'm at work, and I walked over to the shop just now to see what model number the lone Wilton bullet there was: Model 600. There are several massive Reeds & Starretts.
