I've been into cars since I was 16, with the obsession growing year by year, and spent plenty of time wrenching in apartment parking lots, but always knew that I wanted my own garage or shop. When I and my then-girlfriend (now wife) decided to move outside of town six years ago, we started looking in the mountains west of Denver, but quickly found that the population density was too high and the potential for having a shop building and a garden were not great. We ended up picking up twelve acres on the plains about an hour southeast of Denver, with plenty of room to build both a shop and a garden. I painted a car and did plenty of wrenching in the 30x30 detached garage that was already in place, but as her desire for a woodshop grew, we decided that I needed to have a big shop building so we could both pursue our hobbies without trampling all over each other. Finally, in early 2013, I lined up the money and pulled the trigger on a pole barn package from Hansen Pole Buildings (www.hansenpolebuildings.com). After checking out as many buildings as I could in the area, I decided on a 40x60 with a 12' overhang running the length of one 60' side, for a total of 52x60 (3120 sq ft) under roof.

The build began for real in late May 2013, with my buddy doing the site prep. Began with grubbing the organic surface off of the area.

The lumber truck showed up the next morning with everything but trusses. There were a *lot* of boards here.

And then the truss truck finally showed up. There was almost a week's delay due to poor communication on their end, but they finally came down from Wyoming on the roller truck.

I was a little trepidacious about just sliding them off and dumping them on the ground, but it's an acceptable method and seemed to work just fine.

Then it came time to lay things out. Apparently it's a good thing when your building is square. :lol_hitti It was really windy while my wife and I were doing the string lines, so we actually did a fair amount of it at night when the wind died down. Frustrating, but it worked.

Headed into town to rent the augers for the column holes, as well as a couple of tall ladders from work. Right around now was when I started to realize that as great of a truck as my Tacoma was, it wasn't quite big enough.

First end truss going up! You can see the purlin brackets in place. Those were a lot easier to put on on the ground, but still a giant pain in the ***. Four nails from the palm nailer, per bracket, times 20 or so per truss, and they had to be measured perfectly off the ends of the truss. We got the hang eventually, and the wife did a lot of them because it was ground work, but time consuming to say the least.

Just a taste of the weather we got that summer. It seemed to rain only on the weekends, when I was working on the building, and would pour torrentially in the afternoons, leaving a base of greasy mud in which to try to stand on a 12' ladder. I even got the reachfork stuck once. Also take note of my recently reacquired '86 SVO, which I had sold several years earlier but which had just popped back up on eBay. I couldn't resist.

After a ton of time flattopping a 12' ladder while juggling a palm nailer and trailing an air line, and a couple of weekends of assistance from some good family friends, all the trusses were up and bays were filled with purlins. There are a *lot* of purlins, every one with four nails holding it at each end into a bracket, itself held to the truss by four nails. Mofo should not be coming apart any time soon.

I wish I had more pictures of this part. Squaring the building took a lot of straps and even more measurements. I had a long cable with a strap at the end going from corner to corner across the roof purlins as well, to take up any misalignments in the diagonals. It took me a few evenings after work to get it all dialed in, but I felt pretty good that I never had more than a 2" difference in square across the roof.

Did I mention that we were also planning our wedding during this summer? Asked my lady of nearly five years to marry me in May, and we set the date for September 7th. "We'll have the shop done or nearly so, and it'll be a great place for the reception. No problem!" Well, naturally things took longer than anticipated, as they tend to do, and a couple weeks before the wedding, we still didn't have a roof on the building. My parents were hosting the wedding at their place in the trees, and we needed at least a roof for the reception at our place, so my dad hired a few guys to help us with the roof.

We also really wanted at least a little bit of wall to provide shelter from any wind, but I had a couple of work projects that I had to focus on, so we hired the same guys. They failed to put up the insulation, and the steel shipment was actually short one panel (which Hansen made right immediately), but we had a shelter wall for the wedding reception.

With all that over, and very successfully at that, it was time to get back to it. Overhang/soffit and trim took some puzzlement and careful climbing, but it came together.

Wife and I put this wall up in two days by ourselves. She's 5'3" and the longest piece of steel was almost 18 feet long, so it was interesting, but we did it.

I ended up redoing the wall that had gone up before the wedding, due to the missing steel (which had showed up long ago, thanks to Hansen) and the absence of the bubble insulation that was supposed to be installed at the same time. I basically reinstalled the whole wall myself. It was around January at this point; check out the sloppy mudhole that I'm working in.

What the hell? Turns out you're supposed to stretch the eavelight panels as you go, but the destruction manual did not mention this. Hansen took pity on me and sent out another panel so I could finish my run, but the lines don't match up with the steel because I failed to stretch the polycarbonate properly. Lesson learned for the next one. :thumbup:

Fast-forward to September of 2014. Got everything together to run real power to the shop itself. The utility came out and upsized my transformer, and I got a game plan and materials for the service extension to the shop.

Time to make it up on the hot side. Scheduled a service outage with the utility at 0900 and an appointment with the inspector at 1500. Without his signoff, the utility wouldn't turn my transformer back on, so I had to get it right.

I work in the commercial world, so naturally I've got everything in my shop in conduit. Overkill with the Unistrut rack, but I'll end up running air lines and such on it as well.

Haha hi Shannon. Same one that replaced my red 2.3T swapped '92 hatch that got hit. I don't think I still have the downpipe that I picked up from you at WFC, though.

Very cool! I don't see that many pole barns self-built, congrats on what I perceive is a very good job :thumbup: you will have to prioritize getting some concrete lest the building collect too much stuff :). But, it's only natural once the roof is on. Don't ask me how I know...

Nice job, it's a ton of work to do yourself. I have a Hansen building as well and I'm over 2 years into the build and almost done.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I appreciate the comments and kudos! It's been a labor of love, as carpentry is not my strong suit nor passion. Keeping my eye on the goal of being able to work on cars better and easier is what keeps me rolling.

Several of you commented that I should get a real floor in before too much stuff accumulates. Yeah...about that.... I accumulated plenty of stuff in the intervening couple of years after I got power to the building. :eek:

I picked up the white SC for cheap early this year. It's a five speed 2JZ hardtop (no sunroof) with 135k in great shape; the kid had jumped it over a concrete median and shattered the subframes, so I got it for less than a grand. Junkyarded replacement subframes and oil pans and got it put back together. Not super fun grubbing around on the dirt floor, though.

But, this past summer, we finally got the money together for a slab and got it scheduled, so I had to start clearing it out. I moved the leftover building steel outside, threw away a ton of stuff, and managed to fit most of the rest under the overhang.

Got it all cleared out (except the **** on the wall girts/"shelves" :eek: )! Concrete guy came out and laid rebar with the coolest wire-tie gun I've ever seen, but right before he did that it dawned on me to run a couple of underslab raceways.

Just a pair of 1" pipes from right under the panel to the far corner of the shop. I admit I didn't plan it out that well, since the idea dawned on me the day of the rebar drop, but I'm sure I can save at least a little bit of overhead rough. Maybe my compressor will go in that corner, not sure.

I wetted the dirt down the night before so it didn't **** all the moisture out of the concrete.

Along with the rebar, he dropped off a chunk of sonotube. They ended up cutting it up into half-moon sections and placing them around each column to try to localize any cracks off the 90* corners.

Here's the sonotube section. They say they've had great luck with it. The top of the tube is just below the surface of the concrete, so it's not visible now, but that layer is so thin that any cracks coming off the column corners (and 90* corners will almost always crack) should travel to the tube and then stop on the rounded surface. Time will tell.

I kept it saturated for the rest of the day. It evaporated/soaked in really quickly, so I probably sprayed it down three times between 4pm and 11pm. OA temps were about 85* and it was hot and humid inside the building for sure!

Waited a week before pulling any cars in, and my Cummins still hasn't actually been inside. Knocked up some shelves in the meantime for company materials and moved a metal shelf and the **** on it out of the wife's woodshop/garage. It's amazing what a difference a usable floor makes as far as making the building useful.

Still have some minor water entry issues under the door. :( I haven't put the door latch on yet, though, to cram the bottom weatherstrip down against the slab, so I'm not super concerned about it at this point. And I got a curved floor squeegee so a few strokes and it's gone, rather than putting a fan on it and waiting three days for the mud to dry. :D

Three-way switches at either end and four GFCI-protected outdoor receps on each end as well. LED flood-style bulbs in each fixture. Very usable light, and it really makes that overhang come alive at night.

That's about where it sits currently. I did some more conduit rough-in inside for the rest of the overhead lighting, but I need to order up ballasts for the rest of the fixtures to be able to hang them. The two halves of the building are on two three-way switches, one pair at each walk door, so there's not much left to do once the lights are up. Between that, more receptacles throughout, and a big circuit for my compressor, that's the gist of what remains for electrical. I need to do a a wireless internet bridge from the house and a wireless router inside the shop so I can get internet without having a door open, but that's still a little ways out.

Wow....all that in two posts. Awesome story, congrats on the marriage, your neighbor is awesome, good work on the electrical, now my future garage needs to be upsized.

So Hanson delivered everything you needed and you knew how it would look before it went up? Instructions included? Did you price out materials yourself and compare? Heat in the winter? Gotta get cold on the Co plains no?

Yep, they delivered it as I spec'd out. The walk door in the front is 4' wide, and the engineered drawings reflected the column spacing, framing, etc, to accommodate that. That came from a suggestion from my neighbor as well, as he did a 4' door on one of his barns, and it was well worth doing. I love having the extra width. Everything else I kinda ballparked, like the location of the rear walk door under the overhang, but it turned out well and it was a very complete package. It wasn't the cheapest but I'm happy with it.

Haven't figured out heat yet. I have a spare woodstove that I've had kicking around for years but never used, and I already heat with wood a lot, but I don't know where I'd put it, if I can insure for it, or if it would be adequate. The building is pretty well ventilated and not heavily insulated, so I don't know that I can even heat it effectively at this point. My other neighbor has a small stove in his hangar that's comparably sized to my building, but I need to make it over there when it's cold and he's got it running before I try to duplicate that setup.

Forgot to check back in on this, whoops. If you didn't already do this, I used Chase Kolberg of Complete Koncrete out of Peyton. Didn't have a problem coming out this far or lining up the mud to do the same, which can be problematic with contractors who are accustomed to working in town.
