Raptor bed-liner as a garage floor coating

I figured I would share some photos of the coating I just put down on my garage floor. The floor itself wasn't in great condition, it had a lot of spalling concrete that I repaired myself, The previous owner never sealed the concrete and after a few years of winter ice it had some big ruts.

I could have ground the repair smooth, but didn't care enough to spend the time and rent the grinder, lol

Before

But I rolled on about 15 liters of tint-able raptor bed-liner to cover the 900sqft. (around 19 liters total with tint) I would recommend doing a second coat if you want to hide more sins, or perfect coverage. But I was happy, and didn't feel like doing another coat.

The nice thing about raptor, is how it handles. its one of the most rugged coatings when it comes to acidic chemicals. I have heard if a coating can handle aviation hydraulic fluid for 5 minutes, its good... this can handle it for 24 hours! it can handle acids, and brake fluids without a problem.

So Kaje, where can you purchase this in the US? How many square feet did you have and what did it cost to buy all of the material to coat it? Did you mix the color and what did you use to do that?

Thanks

I recommend Levine's auto But I think there are a few others, some of your local auto-parts stores that have paint supplies might be able to get it.

How many square feet did you have and what did it cost to buy all of the material to coat it?

I had a hair under 900 sq ft if you include the border. As for the cost, I cant really say, lol sorry!

Did you mix the color and what did you use to do that?

I went to my local sanels Autoparts, and bought a gallon of Nason blue, and a quart of white paint, I still have about a 2.5 quarts left over (one of streight blue, 1.5 mixed) I just used a paint mixing bit on my drill for a few minutes

How well does it handle water vapor coming up from the concrete?

I dont know the exact answer to that, but I know its more rugged then standard epoxy.. the MBTA maintenance building in Boston used to have to re-epoxy their floors every year, 5 years ago they put down Raptor, and it still looks brand new!

Wow indeed. Does Raptor recommend their product for this application?

Yes they do! Technical Data Sheet
as far as cost, I think its about the same as most epoxy coating systems. (The coverage when rolled on is about double of what is is sprayed)

This has not been done successfully to my knowledge.
Best of luck.

what hasn't been done successfully?

So far after 5 years the Boston MBTA is VERY happy with it, I don't know what epoxy products they used in the past that didnt last so well.

What is mbta

They are the organization that handles all the busses and mass transport for the city of Boston. They raptor is in their repair garage for all of their busses. They used to re-epoxy the floor every year. Since they put raptor in 5 years ago, they havent needed to.

does everything appear to be blue now? I like the idea of a colored floor but keep wondering if it will change the colors of stuff like wires enough to cause problems.

Nope, the finish is more of a satin finish, so not a lot of reflection. If you look at the white garage doors in the photos, you can see its only very slightly blue, but still mostly white.

Looks great... Did you seal the concrete beforehand like it was listed in the documentation for the product or do you know if the MBTA did?

You will have to keep us updated. I was looking doing U-POL for my truck bed and top rails, but not sure I want to do it myself, but to broke to pay anyone else! I'll like end up doing it myself.

Absolutely love Raptor Liner. So much better than any roll on bed liner and is definetly priced competitively. I had it for 2 years on various parts of my truck, never scrubbed or peeled like the rhino liner in my bed did.

What PSI did you spray at?

No i didnt, I also found our the MBTA didnt either! but they were also dealing with old epoxy stuff.. so they might have sealed it years ago.. to many variables to really say if they count or not! lol
I did clean with Simple green, then acid etched.

I used an 18 inch roller!
The floor and the Dash of my race car is Raptor (the stuff on the dash is reduced, dont remember by how much) Also misted some green pearl over the top.

Ah! I figured you would have sprayed it down from the spray gun they sell separately.

Yeah, I forgot about the hot tire thing.

Seems like if it can bond with smooth painted steel, concrete should give it plenty of grip?

If you etched you should should have good adhesion. The only issue if an I could possibly see is the the moisture in the concrete lifting. I assume that is the reason they would recommend a sealer first. If the concrete is older it might not be as big of a deal either. Like you said... So many variables its hard to really say.

Just found this about Raptor liner. It looks great.

Thinking of buying a kit and using it on my wheelbarrow to try it out before doing a whole garage floor. Then I started thinking I could spray it on a utility trailer. How much weight does it add after it's dried? If you're using it on a racecar, I'm guessing not much, but does anyone have anything quantifiable?

Interesting.

How is it to sweep? General clean-up? Have you had occasion to use floor dry yet?

Roll a creeper across?

Please keep us updated down the road.

Cool car

So far its working very well, easy to clean, and has been holding up very well, I have even dropped a bunch of heavy stuff on it, and dragged the bucket of my tractor across it!

I have not used any floor dry on it, sll my spills have been small enough to wipe up with a towel, and was easy to wipe up.

I used the extra from the floor to do my trailer, right over the PT plywood!

The weight isnt bad, This is also road legal, and my state was being a pain about needing carpet, so this was a lot lighter then carpet! I dont have a truck and trailer that can take me to events, but I have many favors I can call in to get me home again if I need to.

Any idea if the bus place has a radiant floor? Wondering if it would insulate or be a non issue. This is very interesting indeed.
Have rolled Monsterliner on the whole outside of my camper van and the plywood floor and bench seats of my tin boat. After 3 years out side still looks like it was done yesterday. Hmmm

The tech data sheet for this product says for on concrete the surface must be pre treated with a sealer or primer. It's a bit vague as to which one, so we would suggest testing first if using this on concrete.

I did not Prep my surface at all, and I found out they didnt prep when they did the MTBA building either. But I do weld, and closest I got was about 12 inch away from the floor with a flux core welder, and had no issues.

Dude, what engine is this?

1994 VH45de. 4.5l infinity(Nissan) V8.
it is basically the homologation engine used in the La Mans cars. but only shares basic design in common.
Its an extremely smooth engine (balance a quarter on its side while bouncing off the rev limiter) that make decent power, and was very cheap for me!

Impressive! Please keep us updated if you have any issues with the coating? How thick does it roll on? Did you do more than one coat?

Very cool! I painted my truck from top to bottom with Raptor Liner 5 years ago and it's just been awesome.

Did you clean the cement floor with xylene before painting? Did you scuff the floor at all?

I've used Raptor liner for several years. Did you buy that in bulk? I can't imagine pouring out quart containers to roll it. I like it for it's easy clean up but don't believe it's stronger than Speedliner that I've used in the past. Nice job though.
