Scored this old Craftsman carry box from the flea today. It should clean up well. Still has the tray. $7.

This. Matco originally was Mac Allied Tool Company. Once Mac started making their own boxes, Matco changed their name to Mechanics Allied Tool Company. Vintage Matco boxes didn't have the *** appeal of Snap-on, but IMO they're better built.

I've owned several of both. I know the epiq are some pretty stout boxes, but I would take a matco 5 or 6 over a Kra or Krl any day. Matco boxes are tanks

I just picked one up too! Same box. Came with the original keys. Outside is a little rusty, but the inside is decent looking factory paint. I think I'm going to wet sand it and clear coat it to preserve it:rocker:

No inside pics yet, it's drying out, it had a bunch of water and muck in the bottom. Tray is intact but kinda nasty at the moment.

Notice that if you put the side latches on the other way, there isn't enough room on the hip of the lid for the three-hole pattern of the latch. They can only be installed one way.

I don't know if this belongs in this thread but I thought maybe someone would like it. I believe I picked this up at sears in 1975. Last picture is in next post.

Any more pics of this box since painted? I have the same one, and I'm debating either painting it or leaving as-is.

Here. I replaced the lock ($5.00), fabricated some locking bars from some steel rods from Home Depot, and a two-arm locking cam from a locksmith ($3.50). The lock works well but unfortunately, the locking cam protrudes a little far and gouged the new paint on the bottom drawer when I turned the lock. I haven't bothered to touch up the paint.

Mine was full of flaking rust, mainly on the bottom and the paint was mostly gone so I didn't hesitate about re-painting. I wanted a useful box more than an antique treasure.

Thanks. My main box is from the same general vintage. (I think I bought it around 1986). It's interesting that they recommended using wax on the slides. (I've always used spray lithium grease).

And the drawers should be removed and the slides cleaned and waxed EVERY SIX TO NINE MONTHS.

Right.

Hi, garage folks, I am way far behind on the vise page ( but have serious vice for vises!) If you know tool boxes like the vise guys know vises than someone will make this look easy. It has been anything but for me.Today I have a question that I only know how to ask, probably. I am looking for a box like this one. I believe it is from the 40,maybe 50's. might be made by blackhawk box? IDK any help that can point me on to one like this would be greatly appreciation. It does not have to be labeled as a Briggs box,,just the right box and drawers arrangement. I can also be reached at [email protected] Live and learn,,,this was posted in show me your toolbox,,they suggested I put it here. Anyone can help ,,,,,many thanks

No complaints here! I love looking at stuff like this. I see old technical drawings and illustrations as artwork. Going by the quality of the scans, the hard copy must have been well taken care of. Thanks for sharing!

probably going to just stay like it is, might "try" to straighten the top box a little.
Not your tin foil boxes they sell today.
this is the top box I got for $40.00, had a good bit of tools with it.
and the bottom box, if you recall, I paid $40.00 for it, and the compressor.
the compressor was to stay at the X girls garage, but since shes the "X" and I had it here, doing some work to it, I just kept it, and going to list it on craigs list for $50.00.
Its not a good picture, No flash, something wrong with the flash on my phone. (that's another post?)
top box and tools shown here.

Here is the compressor, and the top box, sitting on the bottom I got with the compressor. \

I found a snap on KRA 352 roll-around box at an estate sale few days ago for $35 with all the tools inside. the next day I'm browsing round the CL add and found a KRA 59A top box about an hour away. Got it home and cleaned up a little bit. It even has the users manual with it still in the top of the box.

Also for those that might be interested, here are shots of the manual that was still in the lid of this top box.
