Here's a nice old Indestro Socket Wrench Set that I picked up at the flea today. The price was right and I like that old Indestro decal. I have no idea what is supposed to be in the box, but it looks like a good start, if not complete.

re: Indestro model 248 3-arm universal hub puller

See post # 343 in this thread for image from 1959 Indestro catalog showing the model 248 puller.

Here is the page from the 1972 Indestro catalog that shows the model 248 puller. Note that both catalogs state that the item is chrome plated. It wasn't "chrome" like Cal Custom chrome air cleaners - not all buffed out to a mirror finish - but it was a bright chrome finish.

We rented them out, and in many cases they came back pretty beat-up. My guess is somebody did some touch-up work on yours with a rattle can maybe?

Username I've seen similar sets like yours above listed on Ebay. I think the only thing you're missing is a mess of sockets. Nice find. That box is in great shape!

That's an oldie... just Googled the patent number on that ratchet (1798481) and it says Peterson and McNaught - granted Mar. 31, 1931.

Thanks for showing the picture, 4-C, and thank you Outlaw for purchasing the same puller as I did and requesting information. Mine came in a tool box full of tools I purchased last Wednesday.

Mine has never been used.

No Clue FC. All I can do is report what I see. It doesn't look or act like chrome (A wire wheel strips it off, and not in sheets or flakes like decomposed chrome does...), and the PO said it had never been used. I saw no tool marks on it supporting that theory. :dunno:

Reily's seems to be the same matte finish, not bright/polished, as it mine.

You got me. Like I said above, they weren't polished and buffed out - it wasn't a "mirror finish", but every one I ever saw was plated. They were a pretty popular rental item because the purchase price on them was pretty steep.
A lot of them were damaged by guys who put impact guns on them and stripped the threads out on the main drive screw, but even then they were still had that shiny finish. (The rep wrote 'em up as warranty anyway, regardless of how they were abused.) We sold quite a few of them.

I'm puzzled by what you're telling me, because (as I noted above, and as both the 1959 and 1972 catalog state) they were indeed plated. It would take some serious work to grind all that plating off just to paint the thing.
Pretty easy to tell if it had been used - the striker piece would be banged up and there'd be scuff marks where the lug nuts secure the arms to the hub.

Again - you got me! :headscrat

Spotted while visiting - an Indesto 2372 3/4" drive ratchet. As you can see it has been custom modified with a snipe. Although it doesn't look pretty, I think this indicates it's pretty tough, as the ratchet mechanism survived that all that force.

Folks, need a single 1/2" drive 1-1/16 socket. Anyone have an extra for trade?

Here's my Duro/Indestro drawer. I've got a few combination wrenches hanging up elsewhere. (edit - here they are) These pieces have been languishing since I got distracted by Bonney, but they will get their turn, and hopefully become something like sets. I almost always see Indestro stuff at flea markets, but hardly ever what I need to complete something.
Like these short offset DBEs - Where are those 1/4x5/16 or 15/16x1 "Indestro Chicago"s hiding?

Kinda wish I was near Parkersburg IA. These "local pickup only" displays would getcha organized in a hurry:

Only one listed on Ebay right now:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IND...:g:iyAAAOSwKfVXGW40&item=172175929525&vxp=mtr
No way would I pay ten bucks for that socket, though - looks beat to hell and the chrome's peeling.
You might want to contact this guy:
http://www.ebay.com/usr/toolandpartcrib?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
He's my "go to" guy for filling holes on Indestro and Craftsman. he's near Chicago so he's got infinite sources.
I might end up with an extra on that size but I'd have to sort through boxes and boxes of stuff to determine whether or not I've got one.

That's an interesting mix there - you've got a 1970's "MPI" box with earlier tapered-wall sockets in it - looks like the 3/4" has been replaced with a later-production (straight wall) 6-point.

LesserSon:
I don't think they made that shorty double-end box in a 1/4" x 5/16". somewhere in one of the "show us your wrench" threads I posted a long list of all the DBE's that Indestro showed in the 1948, 1959, and 1972 catalogs. (pretty sure it's in the "show us your DBE" thread.) could be mistaken on that one.

Provincial:
The 2873 and 6073 1/4" drive spinners are few and far between on Ebay. There's a nice one on there right now but it's combined with four useless Craftsman sockets and it's about $25.
Last one I grabbed was a fairly decent 6073 (that had rust on the shank up inside the clear plastic handle) and it was about $15 including shipping.

twertsy:
Did you let these guys know you got the 1935 catalog uploaded on your site and it's available for download?
Gotta get these other catalogs to you so they're all available. Acquired an old Herbrand catalog too.

Weather's getting really crappy here so maybe I'll find time to start sorting this mess out here. Have boxes piled up now in the living room five feet high.
Maybe I should stop buying tools and figure out what I have here.

I bought this set of Indestro Super tools at a swap for $11 some weeks ago. I am not a collector but I thought they were oddly somewhat complete and thought I could stash them away for a rainy day or some family in need of tools. I can feel with my hands that these tools are of very high quality, they just seem strong.

Can anyone tell me if they are at least worth what I paid, that way I know whether or not to buy Indestro stuff at the swap again.

1/2" drive breaker bar, 9/16, 5/8, 21/32, 7/8, 15/16, 1, 1 1/16 sockets, along with an additional 9/16 star socket.

Thank you~

Looked in my scrap bin, have a new old stock 1 1/16" Indestro Super, but it is a Deepwell, not standard depth. Had a Wizard 1 1/8" also. Close, but not right on!

Sweet, thanks!

You're most welcome!

Here's a 1/4" drive Indestro set that I picked up. All the sockets are Cad plated and marked D-I which makes them wartime production.
The original blue/green crinkle paint on the box is in remarkable condition.

You should definitely buy Indestro again :D Or the related Duro-Chrome or Wizard tools.

I'm not a collector either, but I like to have a little bit of interesting stuff in my box, and I really like Indestro. In my opinion it's some of the coolest stuff out there, partly because it's a little less known and it is good stuff.

If anyone else chips in I'd probably defer to other members for valuation, but to me $11 sounds in range. From what I've seen you won't make a lot reselling it, but you should be able to recover that, so about right on the price. If you're buying it to use it, then what matters is that you like it and find it affordable.

Nine good to great quality tools for $11 is doing very well. Don't have second thoughts about that... :3gears:

Just bought this set of Indestro Super offset double box end wrenches at the flea market for $8. Sizes that are present are 1/2+9/16, 9/16+5/8, 11/16+13/16, 3/4+7/8, and 15/16+1". The 3/8+7/16 is missing but that just gives me a legitimate excuse to dig through any and every box or bucket full of wrenches I come across. The pouch looks like it will clean up nicely.

Probably going to keep this set in my trunk in case I find a nice vise that needs to be unmounted at an estate sale.

Username, that is an exceptionally nice D-I set you've got there.

CamarosRus - email message sent.

DD / TA - Eleven bucks for that lot is a steal. The breaker alone goes for about $20 on Ebay (plus shipping.)

Thanks four.cycle! I really like the old 1/4" drive sets for some reason. :dunno:
Here's another wartime Duro Chrome midget set that I put together. Again, all the sockets are marked D-I. The nut spinner is a Walden because I can't seem to find an appropriate Duro one. :(

Great set Jason, I'll check the stash for the proper driver. Unfortunately, I think I only have the one in my set.

wow! very nice. what are you using for a drive adapter for the ratchet?

I have yet to see a 1/4" Duro Chrome spinner listed on Ebay during the last year.... a few Indestro models, but no Duro Chrome.

This version of the ratchet is sealed with a female/male drive plug like some of their other rats. Here's a pic of the business end.
BUT, if you have the 3/8" drive version with no plug... Hazet does make a drive plug that will work. I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet for my plug less version. You can search on Amazon for 'Hazet HZ6413-3 Square Through Plug'

Yeah, I haven't seen one either. :dunno: Based on the catalog, it looks like it may have been flexible, but some period pics seem more like the standard spinner.
One set I purchased did come with the business end of the spinner, no handle. But I have no clue if it's Duro or not. No brand or markings of any kind on it. Here's a pic.

Oooooo.... now that's interesting... somebody was asking where he might be able to find a drive adapter in the "Duro Ratchet?" thread. Not sure what drive size he was after.
I wonder if Hazet is stamping out something that will work in 1/4" and 1/2" drive models as well?
Quite spendy - $15 + shipping for a ratchet that can generally be had for $15-$20 on Ebay - I just picked up a 3201 1/2" drive model for $16 + shipping that looks to be in cherry shape. Fortunately it's a male drive so I don't need to worry about adapters.

This issue came up in another thread a couple years ago. It looks like Hazet provided a solution, but I'm not sure if it's still available:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4023341#post4023341

Sorry I can't offer any help on the spinner. I've had a difficult time finding decent ones to complete Indestro sets - most of them are beat to hell or gouged up from morons putting ViseGrips or pipe wrenches on them.

Could be worse, though.... at least you're not looking for a 1/4" Stevens-Walden spinner!

==

Ganymede was asking about production dates on the older Duro Chrome / Indestro ratchets yesterday, so I spent several hours picking through all my catalogs trying to get a handle on when they were producing what.
Not sure if those reading here are paying any attention to that thread, so here's the URL for that list I put together earlier this morning:

Just because Four asked where I find my Indestro tools, I dug out and photographed these two sets. The first set is "Indestro Super" and the second set is Indestro-made "Ward's Quality". I paid $15 for both sets.

I have duplicates in my Indestro set and a couple 6pt sockets to boot.
