My first tool set was a Stevens Walden 3/8 drive. Cost me 5 books of S&H green stamps. I lived in Napa California and had to take the Greyhound bus to Vallejo California which is about 15 miles south of Napa to get them as we did not have a S&H store in our town.Tools long gone, but the memory remains.

I've got a few misc Walden sockets I'd make available to anyone with a jones for them.

There are many other good quality USA tools without a known collector base - P&S, Thorsen, Blackhawk, Action, Giller, Armstrong, Wards, Fleet, Wright and S-K. Seems if it isn't Snap-on, Mac, Matco, Bonney, Proto or Plomb, no one wants individual pieces. If it isn't a complete set, can't get anyone interested in these.

Suggest anyone with an interest add same to his profile. Can we search a profile to find a Walden collector?

thnx, jack vines

I'll take those Armstrongs and Wrights no one's interested in!

I am still using some WW 1/2 drive sockets and I have a 1/2 drive ratchet. The tools belonged to my dad. Maybe it is time I retired the stuff.

A co-worker at the shop has a Walden Worcester 1/2 drive t handle speeder that he still uses daily to install plastic lugnut caps on GM vehicles. I can post pics next week if anyone is interested. Is this thing worth much? Should he stop using it? I think he got it from his grandfather.

It worth a lot more to him than anyone else is willing to offer.
He should keep using it; suits that purpose well.
Props for him that he's making use of his GP's tools to this day.

They're nice old USA made vintage tools. I have a few and use them, but they are hard to collect around here.

Thread revival time!

Took me a while to complete this Stevens Walden set.

The ridiculously large SW ratchet adapter isn't a part of the set. Even by itself, it's so big, there's no way it could ever fit inside the box.

Nice balancing act...lol. Obviously, way too much time on my hands.

Side by side comparison with a 1/4" Snappy adapter.

Walden was slick stuff back in it's day.I've got a trio of ratchets and the three breaker bars. I actually grab one once in a while just for the hell of it.

I picked up this old Walden Worcester Wrench 5/16 hex drive No. 68 Set over the week end. Included are a 5" drive extension for the included wooden handled driver, a sliding T-Bar, a 5" extension, hex drive sockets from 3/16 to 1/2" and the classy fitted box. The slotted screw driver blade appears to be a different finish and I don't think it was originally from this set.

There are no markings on these sockets or any of the original tools from this set.

The sliding T Handle was drilled in centre for 3'8" depth then flared to keep the drive lug from sliding off.

I just love these all metal fitted boxes instead of the injection moulded plastic we see today.

Other than the nicely embossed box with fitted label there are no markings anywhere on the tools with the exception of the slotted screw driver which has a different finish and I don't think is part of the original set.

Nice find, 2oolhound!

I will collect just about anything that falls in my lap. This set came to me from a swap meet a few weeks ago. $5.

Nothing special to note except that it actually has the original T-bar.

I also picked up a Walden 5184 3/4" ratchet from a local pawn shop yesterday for $20. I borrowed the photo of 3/4 ratchet from an eBay listing. Mine looks better :)

seriously?? I've never seen one of these so cheap & so complete.... I've seen a couple of these go for 5x this much and they were haggard...

What were the old walden worcester tools coated with?? I've got a couple (one wasn't enough lol) of the 1/2 drive swiveling t-handles and they're not only burly as all get, but they're also absolutely rust free. Was it nickel?

^ it's not only cheap, there are still no bids on it and it might well time out with no bids.
GJ member ssdave was right: Ebay tool sales are dead in summer. add to that the fact it's Labor Day weekend and you've got little competition for bidding.

Walden Worcester (Stevens Walden) 1/4" drive SAE socket set

I believe this is equivalent to the "Migit" set shown in a 1944 Motor Service magazine ad (shown below.)

I still have some pieces on the way for this, as several of the pieces have been marked with a grinder (as can be seen in the two lower images.)

What puzzles me is whether or not this set contains a period-correct spinner. The spinner included in the set is marked "Walden 3118", and has a clear yellow handle.
The spinner shown in the 1944 Motor Service ad appears to have a yellow-and-black handle.
My later vintage (chrome) sets both contain spinners with clear red handles.
I have on order a spinner with a clear green handle, but I'm not sure at all what era that might be from.

Obviously the 3102 (chrome) universal joint and the "STW" marked adapter are not original to the set.

My question to Private Lugnutz and d42jeep and Username (and anyone else who might be more well-versed the "WWII military kit" genre is: Would this set constitute a period-correct set of that nature, or would you be more inclined to believe it's just the regular "consumer" version?
I'm probably over-thinking this, but the yellow handle puzzles me.

Private Lugnutz:
RE: The RTEC socket and wrench set you mentioned in the other thread (according to the original Ebay ad) apparently was missing the 3108 1/4" 6-point socket. As you can see, I have an extra now. I still have some other pieces on the way to complete this set, but I'm not sure at the moment whether or not I'll end up with extra pieces. If you are needing the 1/4" socket (such as it is with the grinder marks) let me know and I'll forward it to you. (Send me a PM with mailing address and I'll put it in the mail.)

And can anybody tell me how to get this horrible stink out of this box without damaging what little finish is left? It smells like somebody dumped a jar of fish eggs into it about 50 years ago. ;)

I got a 1/4" kit Plomb today and about 1/2 of them are Walden Worcester pieces.. know as much as alloy artifacts told me, but I don't really have a need for them. Keeping for now (saying that so nobody things this is a FS thread)

More of a "anyone care enough about them that I might make a FS thread"
I am in need of Walden round head bullet handle ratchet though. Preferably 3/8.

I live near Worcester, I remember wandering around the place when I was a young man, probably buying tools, probably in the 80's. It was more like a tool flea market towards the end of its life. I always thought what they were offering were cheap tools. I grew up on Snap On and SK and Craftsman.

I am collecting them currently. Actually adding different brands to the overall collection. That's why I was looking for the Walden bullet handle round head 3/8 ratchet. Understand they are somewhat hard to find but I'll keep looking.

I think it's 4051 with round head. I'm interested if you ever want to sell one or know where I can find one. And, thanks much for responding.

Thanks. I just saw your post. Certainly different. I'm leaning toward the bullet handle because you don't see many of them. I did find a Billings version which looks similar. I don't use them anyway.....rather display along with my Nascar Show Car and Truck collection along with other things collected over the years.

Yes, 4051. Bought one off eBay last night. Said it only works in one direction but that's before I take it apart. Interested in another or one for parts knowing they are hard to find. Thanks again.

4051 bullet handle I purchased but may need the cap that switches the pawl. Seller said it works one way so I'm betting one tab is broken off. As I mentioned here somewhere. I was wondering and have asked if the 3/8 4051 caps are interchangeable? this will be my first one to purchase.
