How to straighten those icicle Christmas lights?

Instead of kicking back and taking a nap I decided to spend my Thanksgiving day hanging Christmas lights, not the regular hang em in five minutes type but those icicle kind that are wound up tight and stay that way regardless of bending, tugging, pulling and clamping. I did find some success by using my heat gun to soften the insulation and firmly pulling them straight.
There must be a better way! I can just picture all those factory workers giggling as they tightened the wire tie just a little extra knowing what was in store for the poor fool who was going to try and straighten them out while standing on the top of a 10' ladder on a winters day. Though it was nice to see that they are all working.

Put them in the dryer with tumble off (or on a sweater rack). When toasty warm, hang em up.

The sun straightens them out in a few days. You can't really see they're not perfectly straight at night anyway unless you got low buck strings with a large gap between the strips.

I just lightly pull them straight for a moment and move on to the next icicle. Gravity and the sun seem to straighten them in a few days.
