I recently purchased on eBay a NOS, USA made, Stanley straight jaw locking plier. Here are some pictures:

(1) Does anyone here own any early 1990's, USA made, Stanley locking pliers?

(2) How do the Stanley's compare in terms of strength, durability, and manufacturing quality to the Peterson ViseGrip locking pliers from the late 80's to early 90's?

Thanks,

Dave

Where the tall corn grows!
imo, they sucked - teeth too soft, too much "slop" in the lock mech., actually, the mech. was pretty week, iirc... still have em floating around in a drawer in basement somewhere. cool as a NOS piece though.

They look like old craftsman locking pliers I have. They are OK, but not as nice as my old USA vice grips.

agree, with Csp, I really like my usa vise grips best. Even after buying a 5 gal of vice grips it is hard for me to walk away from a good old set of Peterson vise grips

This seems like an appropriate thread - during my eBay travels I have seen listings for older USA made "Stanley Proto Industrial" locking pliers. To my untrained eyes they look like close relatives to Vise Grip locking pliers, whether that be Petersen or Irwin era, I'm unsure (I'm not well versed in "The Original" Vise Grip). Here are some eBay examples:

4" Curved Jaw 277WR

6" Bent Long Nose 286BLN

7" Curved Jaw 294WR

9" Long Nose 289LN

These were made by Petersen.

These are NOS roughly from the late 80's, or early 90's that I purchased on ebay about a year or 2 ago. The are WILDE brand, but manufactured by Peterson in DeWitt Nebraska, USA.

(this should give you an idea what original Peterson's looked like from that era. Compare to the OP's pictures in post number 1 of this thread)

I should have bought more while I had the chance. :(

I also have a pair identical to the OP's Stanley, however my pair is a Craftsman. (which I've been using as a fuel line pinch-off tool for several decades now. lol)

According to the manufacturers mark on this tool (letter I inside a circle) it appears these were made by: I-circle = Parker Mfg Co, ca. 1962 - 1986

And to answer your questions.....

1. I don't own any "Stanley" locking pliers from that time frame however, I do own the Craftsman version (pictured above) and I am willing to bet they are both made by the same company so therefore they would be comparable to each other.

2. As you can see (and I even mentioned above) that my Craftsman locking pliers have been demoted to only pinching fuel hoses.... and they've been this was since new. Back in the late 80's, and early 90's I had several Craftsman locking pliers (including the one pictured) and I considered all of them as second rate copies of Peterson Vise Grips. The handles were flimsy, the jaws bent under heavy load, the release handle was EXTREMELY flimsy and bent easily, the teeth were soft, etc, etc. They were basically JUNK! And I wasn't the only one who felt that way. Pretty much anyone who ever owned these locking pliers would probably agree with me. That's probably why Sears stopped selling them. lol. Of all the Craftsman locking pliers that I ever owned, this pair is all that is left. All others have long been bent and/or twisted into unusable **** and thrown away. This was probably not the answer you were looking for, but it is my honest opinion. Hey, you asked....
