Bob Heine – You are not suggesting that I do something sneaky, illegal, and downright dastardly, are you?!? Shame on you!!

Okay, now where is that orange vest of mine… I’m off to Home Depot! Don’t be surprised if you hear “Cleanup in aisle 5” over the intercom and see an “employee” running from the scene of the crime :)

taumac – Yep, more alive than ever! It seems YOUR toolbox season has come a bit early this year! Looking great over there at 5-Stitches!

tinbender66 – See me? Barely! It seems I’m only making guest appearances in my own thread lately. But I think you know the feeling. Hope you and yours are doing well these days.

shortykorte – Yeah, they are getting pretty liberal with their monthly passes! If I listen to Bob, I might also need a set of those glasses with the fake nose and mustache too.

jbmatth – Thanks. What could POSSIBLY go wrong with Bob’s plan? (said the crazy fool right before he got locked up in a REAL Asylum!) :)

Vernmotor – I may not be here in body (or forum posts, as the case may be) very often anymore (I’m finding out an active 12 year old is pretty demanding!), my buddies here at the GJ are always on my mind.

JCQuick – Bob has enough “good” ideas to get us ALL in trouble! Updates coming soon… I’ve made some decent progress in the city garage.

So let me say just that - Thank you...

Thanks for stopping in 1/2 Cup! And thanks for the kind words. That means a lot, coming from you.

There is no one more guilty of visiting the many wonderful build threads here on GJ without saying "HI" than I. Yours is a must-see, for sure (for the 2 or 3 remaining GJ members that have not visited it yet :) )

Its hard to believe I've been on the GJ for over 10 years now... time flies, doesn't it? But its all good.

Let me finish by saying "You're welcome". I'm sure you understand it perfectly when I say I do this because I love it. I know you do as well. And its great to be sharing it all with my friends here on the forum.

APPARENTLY, THESE VINYL BANNERS DON’T LAST FOREVER…

This is what happens to a vinyl banner that reaches the end of its useful life (Okay, maybe a little past its useful life!). Its best to take it down before it reaches this point unless you enjoy cleaning up big messes. Ten years isn’t a bad lifespan in this Florida heat though.

3552-New-Corvette-Banner-01.jpg

The banner was attached to this PVC pipe frame and served as a door for one of the upper storage lofts.

3553-New-Corvette-Banner-03.jpg

I managed to find an exact replacement (if you wait long enough, EVERYTHING turns up on ebay!), so I knew it would fit properly.

3554-New-Corvette-Banner-05.jpg

Here it is with it slid to the side a ways to see how loft access is gained.

3555-New-Corvette-Banner-06.jpg 3556-New-Corvette-Banner-07.jpg

And views from afar. The second red banner to the right of the library ladder is a matching storage loft and its sliding “door” shares the same steel cable.

Damn, I thought you had a computer controlled heating and cooling system hooked into the Asylum's mainframe computer pulling realtime data from 3 National Weather Stations to keep the Asylum at the ideal work conditions controlled remotely via satellite through your cell phone? LOL

It always amazes me how you can take a simple idea and make it look really really good if I put a banner on a piece of PVC it would look like redneck engineering. Your shop looks awesome as usual.

Ah, a little flashback tease of the Asylum.

I assume this Christmas will be full of first Christmas events. Good for you. Have a joyous Christmas and I know all your fans are anxiously awaiting updates in the new year.

taumac – Ha! I have to leave something for when I win the lottery, don’t I? A/C would be the first addition to the Asylum (followed closely by some nice sports cars!). In the meantime, I will bask in the cool air being pushed around with fans. Who am I kidding? There is no “cool” air to be had in these FL summers!

Thanks. I have to give some credit to a coworker on the sliding banner door idea. I was discussing about 50 different ways to build those loft doors with him when he said “Why don’t you just string a cable across the room and slide some lightweight doors on it?” I said why not and the rest is history.

shortykorte – Although I have a few that I would just as soon forget, most flashbacks are good memories for me. One thing I must say though, the Garage Journal has really given me a reason to document everything being done at the Asylum and it is now great to be able to go back and reminisce about past projects.

Thanks for the Christmas wishes and the same goes out to you. You have perfect timing in reminding me that I need to “make the rounds” here at the GJ to spread the cyber-cheer. One more day of work and I am off for the year!

We know you have been busy but thanks for remembering to check in with your GJ family. I'm sure 2017 will be an exciting and fun filled year for you and your family. A little QST wouldn't hurt either.

May your Christmas be peaceful and filled with love and the New Year be a time of rebirth.

I was pleased to see your thread pop up again this year. I trust things are good again. You were one of the first threads that I started to follow when I first joined the group.

Merry Christmas from one of your quieter followers

Grizz1963 – It’s hard to believe that things could get much better than 2016 with my new bride and family, but I’m sure it will!! Thanks.

sublime68charger – Thanks. The Pack is looking good. I’m sure I will be glued to the set this Sunday!

shortykorte – I manage to squeeze in some QST every now and then. My wife knows I wouldn’t be me without it! God bless her. Have a great 2017!

ODIS – It’s been my pleasure sharing all of this with all of you. Although my free time has been mainly consumed with getting the city garage outfitted to park all the vehicles inside, there is still more to come here as I finish up the Asylum.

don long – Thanks. Life is great, Don. I only wish I could clone myself so that I could experience all life has to offer AND accomplish everything on this crazy man’s To-Do list!

JCQuick – Thanks and I hope the holiday season was kind to you. You have made great progress on your place and I look forward to seeing more updates in 2017.

tinbender_66 – Wishing you a wonderful 2017. Potentially the Packers and Seahawks could rival again this year. Don’t could on me for a bet though… I wouldn’t want to jinx the Pack like last time. :)

dlcwent – Thanks for popping in. Things are pretty slow at the Asylum these days, but my TO-DO list keeps growing (funny how that happens!). There’s no doubt there will be more updates coming in the future!

I would like to take a moment to wish all the forum members the best in 2017!!

Well,if we can get past Atlanta on Saturday and if the other games come out right we may very well meet again.............HERE! No bets though.......I'm still savoring my winnings from last year. Bragging rights? Certainly! Congrats on this new phase of your life!

A BLANK SLATE - THE NEW CITY GARAGE…

I hinted at this in an earlier post, but it’s time for full disclosure. There is MUCH more to the story than just a new garage, however. This new path I find my life on has brought with it a loving wife and her three daughters and a (step) son-in-law to boot. Yep, old Shopnut got married recently and I’m lovin’ it! Never venturing down the fatherhood path before, I’m just now finding out what parenting is all about (and how much there is to learn!!). I had a great childhood and still get along great with my family. So “Family First” has always meant a lot to me. But understanding it from the parent point of view is a whole new ball game. Suffice to say, progress will be much slower on the shop projects.

Although the ASYLUM had more than enough space for me alone to live in, it simply wasn’t designed to support a family, fulltime… we needed more space! So on the house hunt we went. Besides an adequate number of bedrooms and whatnot, I put a 3-car garage on the “must-have” list… one spot for her, one for me, and one for all the other stuff! We found what we were looking for after a couple months and the rest is history. But no fear, the ASYLUM is still with us! And will be for a long time to come.

But this thread is not necessarily here to discuss family matters. We are here to talk about garages. So let me introduce my new one where I’ll be spending a fair amount of time in.

I would call it a “minimal” 3 car garage, because it is only 600 sq ft. Luckily, it’s deep enough for my Avalanche to fit into, but just barely, with about 2 feet to walk in front of it. It has the typical double/single garage door setup. There is a pretty decent sized and level driveway leading up to it for when I need the space to do outdoor projects.

Here are the other three pictures taken before we took ownership and it started getting filled up. The doors have insulation on them, but the garage is not air conditioned at the moment.

This picture shows the double door. Don’t mind the construction debris, at least the builder left the extra touch-up paint. No outlets are found on that far wall so I will need to add some.

3559-New-Garage-01.jpg

Here is a view looking the other direction at the single door. There is a step in the exterior wall between the doors so this bay is not as deep. One thing I don’t like about this spot is the door go right up to the side wall. If driving a car in there the passenger door would be right tight against the wall. Not sure what the architect was thinking there. But with motorcycles parking here, it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

3560-New-Garage-04.jpg

Another view of the single bay area showing the main panel. The way it is bumped out should make it a little easier to add a circuit or two when needed.

3561-New-Garage-03.jpg

After having my last city garage just about the way I liked it, I’m not sure I’m real keen on starting COMPLETELY over. But I always wished my last one was bigger and that wish has now been granted.

.

PLEASE NOTE: I’ve decided to append this new garage story in my existing “When Not Committed to the ASYLUM, You Will Find Me Here” thread. It seems the title still fits, so why not.

..

Like they say "go big or go home". Congratulations on the new family. Darn, you missed out on late night diaper changes or feeding but so did I. any of the daughters or SIL into cars or shop stuff?

Looks like a clean slate on the garage. Great idea on them putting panel in a power chase. Looking forward to your new adventures.

taumac – Every now and then I catch myself really, really focused on the Asylum again, and Mrs. Shopnut gives me a wakeup call to snap me out of it. :) Honestly, she is pretty supportive of the whole shop thing.

walt111 – Thanks! 2017 is starting out great so far, hopefully for you too!

tinbender_66 – Well, neither of our teams made it… bummer. Hoping for a good Superbowl, despite that fact.

shortykorte – Thanks. Daughter#1 is into crafts in her spare time and seems to like the hands-on stuff. Her husband knows his way around cars, mostly because the college cars have kept him busy. They both just graduated from college and are living about 3 hours away.

Daughter#2 is a techie, focused on IT in college, but also likes engineering. We are rebuilding an old computer server together when she is home from school. It’s fun to see her get excited about a project. She has her own set of tools too and isn’t afraid to use them. Considering her technical aptitude, she and I are probably most alike.

Daughter#3 doesn’t seem to be too interested in shop stuff yet, but I don’t think she was exposed to many mechanical things as a child. BUT that will change being around me! Her mom jokes, however, about D#3 recognizing Home Depot from her car seat as they pulled up when 2 years old. That’s funny. My wife is no stranger to home improvement projects and I was impressed when I spotted a nice Dewalt mitersaw in her hallway when I was over there on our first date. D#3 is also into the 80’s rock and pop music, so there are never any issues with fighting over which music to play. I’m extremely happy a thirteen year old and I can agree on music!!

Brian R – Thank you! This is an exciting time of my life and I’m so glad I lucked into it.

JCQuick – Yeah, this change was a duesy. Nothing halfway about it! I DO have my same job though. :) Things are a lot different for me now, but it’s all good. Car running?... I’ll have you know that I started the Chevelle about two weeks ago and it was all systems GO! The Corvette and a couple bikes are next. I’m excited to know that the WAWA station close by has the ethanol-free gas for the old bikes. BTW, I’m living in your neck of the woods now. Nice area!

A PLACE FOR ALL THOSE AEROSOL CANS…

I stopped at the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore near the new house for first time since moving in and stumbled upon a great find 2 minutes after browsing. After some wheeling and dealing, I paid $75 for this pair of paint carts. The black paint on the racks is still in great shape and they look nearly new.

So in the truck they went.

3562-Spray-Paint-Carts-06.jpg

One of the nice things about them is they have casters, so they fit in nicely with the Asylum motto of “Everything will be off the floor, and if not, it will be on wheels”. The only exception to this rule is the car lift, but it too has a caster set for those rare occasions when I need to move it, HaHa

3563-Spray-Paint-Carts-09.jpg

Another nice feature is being able to hold the regular or taller sized cans. I have a pretty large collection of both.

3564-Spray-Paint-Carts-12.jpg

The slots are sized nicely to hold oil bottles too, although for the section where these will be stored, I think it’s best to lay down a sheet of hard plastic to prevent the wire rack from eventually poking through the bottom of the jugs.

3565-Spray-Paint-Carts-22.jpg

I had my spray cans in these plastic totes that were then stored on shelves (like on the left of the picture) and it wasn’t real convenient when I needed to paint something. Now it is easier to spot and grab what is needed. Six cans can fit in each slot.

3566-Spray-Paint-Carts-13.jpg

One will be used for paint and I nearly filled it up already when I cleared out 4 tote bins. Let’s see… 8 cans wide x 6 cans tall x 6 cans deep = 288 cans x 12 oz = 216 pounds. Fairly heavy, and I don't think that even includes the metal cans! Yeah okay, I have entirely too much paint.

The second cart will be used for oils and other chemicals.

3567-Spray-Paint-Carts-17.jpg

The plastic paint supplier side panels are attached in such a way that replacing them with Asylum approved aluminum tileboard will be a snap someday.

That's funny I just got 2 new neighbors a few weeks ago 1 I knew about as the old owners told me. My surprise was when a guy haulin a Buick GS down the street saw me starring and stopped to introduce himself as the new owner of the empty lot next to me. Good thing is he a car guy + he paid way more than I did and I thought I got raped. lol

But neither appear to be you :lol_hitti I'm sure that one day will arrive I just hope I'm on my best behavior :shocking:

I'm glad you like the area its pretty cool still has a small town feel to parts of it

Shopnut, just wanted to chime in here. Don't mind if I use one of your sunset pictures as my desktop background, they are fantastic.

Welcome to the great part of the state. I'm just down the road from JCQuick so we're all neighbors!

I have no idea why you have soooo many paint cans? I thought everything in your place was yellow and black. LOL. That's probably best paint storage idea I've seen.

Those Floridians are just coming out of the woodwork.

Mark, nice find on the paint can racks. Gerard being a spray bomb aficionado can test all those for you. Since I saw a Shake-a-weigh in his garage, I'm sure he can keep those cans thoroughly mixed.

HOTFR8 / sublime68charger – The ASYLUM is most definitely in the long range plan which includes retiring at the lake property. In fact, my wife is plopping ideas into a Pinterest board every other day for what the retirement home will look like. I need to start adding some myself or its going to turn out too feminine!!!

Mental health escape is a perfect term for the Asylum… for all of us!! Since Mrs. Shopnut has been put on Sunday work schedule for a period of time, I found something that interests D#3 enough to entice her to come out with me when her mom can’t. More on this in a future post.

JCQuick – Well, I’ll guarantee that wasn’t me driving by – I would recognize your new garage!!! Glad you have a new car guy as a neighbor. I have lots of exploring to do in the area yet, but I’m starting to know my way around.

west_perf – Happy to hear you like the sunset picture, Mother Nature did most of the work! And I’m glad someone will enjoy it on a daily basis! Thanks for the welcome. Perhaps we will all meet someday. Almost got to meet JCQuick down in Sarasota one time, but SOMEONE didn’t make it to the party!

taumac – No idea…. riiiiiiiiiight! :)
Yes, every now and then, I stumble upon something good!

JCQuick (again) – Way to go Apopka for the win!!… I didn’t make it to the race this year, but my buddies from work did a fine job of representing me!

shortykorte – Actually I need one of those paint shakers and I think I will use one of my reciprocating saws, that I never use, as the power source. should be simple to build (famous last words!).

The weather is nice, JC needs to shows us the shop, Craig has a grill that needs some slab of ribs and the Prez, well he can tell us about the next new garage layout at 5 stitches. I'll bring the beverages.

That's a great idea. I will not be talking about my place because the layout will probably change 4 times just on way home. JC garage will be the spotlight of the day.
