Regarding the hub... before investing in a replacement, I would suggest verifying that the other major components are all good; the spring, the spindle pulley assembly, the quill/spindle assembly (run-out).

Can that custom hub modification be removed? Are all three broken stubs still in the hub? Perhaps the hub can still be used.

The hub has holes drilled in it for the bolts but could probably physically be used until a suitable replacement is located... There is a hub on eBay for$45 shipped but as you said I want to check runout and bearings before I jump on that... These presses don't come up for sale very often but I did put a want ad on Craigslist for another press or parts. I probably won't have time to dive into it for a few weeks but appreciate the ideas! I did turn it on and chuck up a bit and visually if looked pretty good on runout but will investigate it further!

So had a little bit of time to spend on the old girl today and she cleaned up pretty nice for the rough life it lead! I bolted it to a furniture dolly and pushed her out by the street and proceeded to soak it with engine degreaser. It has enough original paint in it at this time I think I will just clean up the column and tables and perform maintenance on it until I give it a full resto down the road! I was really shocked how nicely it cleaned up compared to how it looked when I got it! I also removed the abomination of the light and switch on the head so that already looks way better! I think what I will do for the hub / handle area is find the newer version of the hub with the larger 1/2 thread pitch as I believe it bolts on with no mods... That way I can get away from the small hub that is prone to breaking... Does anyone have one they are looking to sell? Also I will get a cman motor on it and then use it like it was meant to be[emoji2]

Smoke, is that a weld on the head on the back left rear corner? Was there more damage that the broken hub?

Yes that is a weld but it was done correctly and had good penetration on the back side... I wonder how it got damaged? My thought is maybe it got dropped ?

I agree! I did not expect it to have that drastic effect as it did! I did not think there was going to be that much original paint left [emoji3] now I will pull it apart to clean the column, Lube everything and put a new motor on it and put it to use !

Craftsman dp#31

I picked up dp#31 today... a 2nd gen Emerson. There is no model number plate, but it's highly likely a 113.24560. It came with an angle vise and a foot switch and a bunch of bits including a good assortment of larger bits with turned-down shanks. This will likely be a part-out.

I'm 4 days post-surgery on my right shoulder, so it was a bit of a challenge to arrange pick-up and help.

Wow Frank. I hadn't heard about the surgery! Hope the recovery is swift!

Frank; is that "new" DP the 8 speed with the skinny belt? If so it's actually worth fixing up if its not a basket case. I took one of those as a rust bucket... I cleaned it up, painted it, and it was a huge hit with one of my close friends...

I have the same 8 speed with skinny round belt I believe your talking about. What is the best belt to use? I have a hard time drilling anything over 1/2" without the belt slipping.

Thank you. The surgery was for bone impingement on shoulder muscles.

The 2nd gen Emersons were the last with the 1/2" belt pulleys. Many parts are backward compatible with the classic style Craftsman drill presses. I got it for the extras and the because of the price.

Scored a vari slow equipped drill press tonight for $40...it's hub is damaged so I need a hub for this plus my original unit! I have not gotten it home yet so I am not sure what model it is but the motor is dated 1954... It does have the varislow but there is no selector lever for it but it looks factory! It does have a tilt table but it is missing the chuck as well... I think I did decent on the price and I think this one may get a full resto !

Correction[emoji3] it is missing it's chuck key[emoji23] and I don't know how you change speeds but for $40 I figured it was worth it ! All the pulleys are marked savage mfg co Phoenix ax...is this an oe set up or is it aftermarket ? It is a model 103.23131

The Vari-Slo was an optional accessory sold by Sears specifically for the Craftsman 100 and 150 drill presses.

That Vari-Slo is missing the entire front end. It's going be a challenge to find parts. That bolt inside may indicate that a bracket is broken... a common issue. And the chunk missing from the front pulley may interfere with the belt.

I have no doubt the drill press itself can be brought back to a useful life.

Last night a gracious forum member sold me a nice 150 crown top logo floor model Dp! This one just needs some cleaning and a motor to run! I will post some pictures up later. It requires no parts or restoration to be put to use[emoji38] I love the power bronze look!

Yes what a great find! I always find it interesting just how some people take great care of tools etc. and others treat them like ****. This one was obviously well taken care of.

Thanks. Yes, the vise was included. Also had the original owner's manual.

Just from seeing this guy's shop and talking with his survivors, I predicted the condition of the table. I think that plywood was installed day 1.

Dp#33. A model 113.24501 on the lower end of the condition spectrum, but it has an MSA.

The base and table are dark gray. The head frame is power bronze with the external tension knob. I did not think that Emerson used that color or the tension knob. This one is likely a hybrid, but :dunno:

Can you get a shot of the motor plate? There may be a date code there. Does the table tilt? That is another indicator.

Very nice!

There should be a model information plate on the base near the column. It's likely a 103.23130 or 23131.

For the year, check the motor information plate. There should be a date code stamped near the bottom of the tag.

Well, my right arm is still somewhat gimpy. I should start PT next week. Because I just can't sit still, I've been working on things... slowly and carefully.

I got these two vises cleaned up from dp#31 & dp#32.

I also made some progress on cleaning dp#32. I had this one sold long before I ever found it. I just need to finish and deliver it.

The column cleaned up well with mineral spirits and a green Scotch-Brite pad. It still needs a final cleaning with some sandpaper and a coat of wax.

The original paint on the head frame and table is amazing.

The table is flawless!

Most other parts are mostly cleaned.

Head frame reassembled and tested. It runs great! The chuck was cleaned a bit more with fine sandpaper while it was spinning.
